People's Revolt in Orissa by D. P. Mishra Pdf

The Book Traces The Birth, Growth And Fulfilment Of The State People S Movement In The State Of Talcher Which Was One Among The Twenty-Six Princely States In Pre-Independent Orissa. The People Of The Princely States Were Subjected To A Dual Pressure; On One Hand By The Feudal Lord Directly And On The Other, The Colonial Authorities Indirectly Who Were There Behind The Local Ruler. Suppressed By The Feudal Lords Over Centuries Through The Collection Of Various Illegal Dues Like Rashad, Magan, Bethi, Bheti, Etc., The People, Towards The Closing Years Of Nineteenth Century, Raised Their Voice Of Protest In 1898 For The First Time. It Was Followed By Uprisings In 1908 And 1911.The Strengthening Of The National Movement In The Twenties Gave Impetus To Another Popular Upsurge In Talcher In 1922, Which Was Again Suppressed. The Indomitable Zeal Of Talcher People Again Came To The Forefront During The Second Of 1930 S When The All Orissa States Peoples Conference Met In 1937 And Gave An Organised And Coordinated Shape To The Prajamandal Movements. To Oppose The Royal Pressure The People Of Talcher Took Recourse To A Unique Hizrat (Mass Exodus) Movement In 1938 In Thousands To Neighbouring British Ruled Territory. It Attracted The Attention Of Not Only Gandhiji, But The British M.P. Ms. Agatha Harrison, Who Visited Their Camps. During The Quit India Movement In 1942, The British Fired Upon The People Of Talcher From Air, Which Is One Among Five Such Incidents In The History Of India. Ultimately The Popular Victory Was Ensured When The King Was Compelled To Sign The Merger Documents In December, 1947. This Bloody Straggle Of The People Of Talcher Remains A Saga Of Self Sacrifice And Dedication Against The Unholy Nexus Of Obsolete Feudal Absolutism And Imperialism.

Health and Medicine in the Indian Princely States by Waltraud Ernst,Biswamoy Pati,T.V. Sekher Pdf

Since the 1980s there has been a continual engagement with the history and the place of western medicine in colonial settings and non-western societies. In relation to South Asia, research on the role of medicine has focussed primarily on regions under direct British administration. This book looks at the ‘princely states’ that made up about two fifths of the subcontinent. Two comparatively large states, Mysore and Travancore – usually considered as ‘progressive’ and ‘enlightened’ – and some of the princely states of Orissa – often described as ‘backward’ and ‘despotic’ – have been selected for analysis. The authors map developments in public health and psychiatry, the emergence of specialised medical institutions, the influence of western medicine on indigenous medical communities and their patients and the interaction between them. Exploring contentious issues currently debated in the existing scholarship on medicine in British India and other colonies, this book covers the ‘indigenisation’ of health services; the inter-relationship of colonial and indigenous paradigms of medical practice; the impact of specific political and administrative events and changes on health policies. The book also analyses British medical policies and the Indian reactions and initiatives they evoked in different Indian states. It offers new insights into the interplay of local adaptations with global exchanges between different national schools of thought in the formation of what is often vaguely, and all too simply, referred to as 'western' or 'colonial' medicine. A pioneering study of health and medicine in the princely states of India, it provides a balanced appraisal of the role of medicine during the colonial era. It will be of interest to students and academics studying South Asian and imperial and commonwealth history; the history of medicine; the sociology of health and healing; and medical anthropology, social policy, public health, and international politics.

Image Building among Most Vulnerable Tribal Groups (MVTGs) of Madhya Pradesh by Dr. Harendra Pratap Singh Chouhan,Vivek Sharma Pdf

The present book is an attempt to touch on one of the most neglected and talked aspects of a significant portion of the population (the most vulnerable tribals of MP) and also what can be done to build the image of these tribal groups. One of the authors has done significant research work in the field by visiting the actual places of residence of the tribal groups under study and has extensively interviewed them. As both the authors are from the management stream a new perspective is presented in the book. Till now this was the domain of the sociologists and the anthropologists, but the management perspective will help the readers to view things differently. The book is divided into six chapters. The first chapter titled “Image building and understanding the tribes is an introduction to both the tribes as well as what all comprises image building. This chapter is basically for those readers who are not acquainted with the tribal groups and what is meant by the terminology like most vulnerable groups. The chapter also introduces what image building means. Chapter two is more about the reports and the works done by the other scholars so that the readers know what other scholars view about the present topic and also the authors have developed their research and the findings based on the work of the scholars of the field. Chapters three and four comprise the crux of our work. These two chapters will help the readers to get an understanding of the culture, living styles, and every aspect of the life of these MVTGs. A comparative study will help the readers to know that though all the three groups are from MP still many differences are there among the three groups and the management of their everyday living and image building will be decided based on these differences. Forest, agriculture, migration, education, culture, dance, house structure, tattoo, worship, food, etc. are some of the aspects which are dealt with and all the three groups are compared on these features. Chapter five deals with the image-building aspects with the background of all the marketing concepts required to make the image of these tribes as required and what can be done to enhance the image. For the readers having no background in management, the chapter is such planned that they get an idea about the basic terminology of promotion and image building. Chapter six comprises what we feel as researchers and some of the suggestions from our side based on the four years of exhaustive work we have done. These suggestions can help the MVTGs to get what they want (not using the term “including in mainstream”). So, we conclude that this book can be an effort to start the debate from a very new perspective.
