An Introduction to Neuroendocrinology by Richard E. Brown Pdf

This book is designed as an introductory text in neuroendocrinology; the study of the interaction between the brain and endocrine system and the influence of this on behaviour. The endocrine glands, pituitary gland and hypothalamus and their interactions and hormones are discussed. The action of steroid and thyroid hormone receptors and the regulation of target cell response to hormones is examined. The function of neuropeptides is discussed with respect to the neuroendocrine system and behaviour. The neuroimmune system and lymphokines are described and the interaction between the neuroendocrine and neuroimmune systems discussed. Finally, methods for studying hormonal influences on behaviour are outlined. Each chapter has review and essay questions designed for advanced students and honours or graduate students with a background in neuroscience, respectively.

Cellular Peptide Hormone Synthesis and Secretory Pathways by Jens F. Rehfeld,Jens R. Bundgaard Pdf

The concept of hormonal regulation using intercellular peptide messengers dates back to the discovery of secretin in 1902. The concept was simple: A peptide is released from specific hormone producing cells, endocrine cells, into circulation upon stimulation of the cells. The peptide hormone travels via blood to its target, the cells of which are equipped with specific receptors for high-affinity binding of the particular peptide hormone. Receptor binding subsequently elicits action of the target cells. This concept has been seriously challenged by modern biochemistry and cell biology. Thus, it is now well established that the gene of a specific peptide hormone may be expressed in different types of endocrine cells, in neurons, and in some instances also in adipocytes, myocytes, osteoblasts, and immune cells. Today, only a few hormones – including the old master hormone insulin – represent the original endocrine paradigm. Instead, the widespread cellular synthesis now raises the qu- tion of how the body maintains the regulation of its functions by peptide hormones when a hormone may originate from a variety of cells.

Peptide Hormone Secretion by K. Siddle,J. C. Hutton Pdf

Polypeptide hormones play a central role in the regulation of biological processes from the minute-to-minute control of vital functions to the programming of birth, development, reproduction, and ageing. The first of a two-volume work on the methods of study used in this field, Peptide Hormone Secretion focuses on the isolation of polypeptide hormones and their identification and structural analysis, the development of sensitive bioassay and immunoassay techniques, and tissue localization of peptide hormones and their encoding MRNAs, as well as techniques for characterization of peptide hormone receptors. Ideal for graduate students and researchers, the book includes coverage of the general principles and strategies that the methods are based on, so the techniques will have a wide application to biologically active peptides involved in neurotransmission, growth regulations, differentiation, and vasoregulation.

Peptide and Protein Hormones by Dr. Wolfgang König Pdf

Incorporates the developments in the field during the 25 years since the last major overview of peptide and protein hormones. Reviews the most important features of the hormones, including structure/activity relationships. Also describes their medical use, noting that western society encourages an overabundance of aggressive stress hormones, and that the role of doctors is to return them into balance with cooperative sex hormones. Of particular use to researchers, students, and practitioners is a special listing of the hormones according to a network of structural similarity and regulating cascades. Hormone Signaling by Vincent Goffin,Paul A. Kelly Pdf

Multicellular organisms require a means of intracellular communication to organize and develop the complex body plan that occurs during embryogenesis and then for cell and organ systems to access and respond to an ever changing environmental milieu. Mediators of this constant exchange of information are growth factors, neurotransmmitters, peptide and protein hormones which bind to cell surface receptors and transduce their signals from the extracellular space to the intracellular compartment. Via multiple signaling pathways, receptors of this general class affect growth, development and differentiation. Smaller hydrophobic signaling molecules, such as steroids and non-steroid hormones, vitamins and metabolic mediators interact with a large family of nuclear receptors. These receptors function as transcription factors affecting gene expression, to regulate the multiple aspects of animal and human physiology, including development, reproduction and homeostasis. The aim of this book is to cover various aspects of intracellular signaling involving hormone receptors.

Mechanisms of Hormone Action by P Karlson Pdf

Mechanisms of Hormone Action: A NATO Advanced Study Institute focuses on the action mechanisms of hormones, including regulation of proteins, hormone actions, and biosynthesis. The selection first offers information on hormone action at the cell membrane and a new approach to the structure of polypeptides and proteins in biological systems, such as the membranes of cells. Discussions focus on the cell membrane as a possible locus for the hormone receptor; gaps in understanding of the molecular organization of the cell membrane; and a possible model of hormone action at the membrane level. The text also ponders on insulin and regulation of protein biosynthesis, including insulin and protein biosynthesis, insulin and nucleic acid metabolism, and proposal as to the mode of action of insulin in stimulating protein synthesis. The publication elaborates on the action of a neurohypophysial hormone in an elasmobranch fish; the effect of ecdysone on gene activity patterns in giant chromosomes; and action of ecdysone on RNA and protein metabolism in the blowfly, Calliphora erythrocephala. Topics include nature of the enzyme induction, ecdysone and RNA metabolism, and nature of the epidermis nuclear RNA fractions isolated by the Georgiev method. The selection is a valuable reference for readers interested in the mechanisms of hormone action.
