Perceiving Reality by Christian Coseru Pdf

What turns the continuous flow of experience into perceptually distinct objects? Can our verbal descriptions unambiguously capture what it is like to see, hear, or feel? How might we reason about the testimony that perception alone discloses? Christian Coseru proposes a rigorous and highly original way to answer these questions by developing a framework for understanding perception as a mode of apprehension that is intentionally constituted, pragmatically oriented, and causally effective. By engaging with recent discussions in phenomenology and analytic philosophy of mind, but also by drawing on the work of Husserl and Merleau-Ponty, Coseru offers a sustained argument that Buddhist philosophers, in particular those who follow the tradition of inquiry initiated by Dign?ga and Dharmak?rti, have much to offer when it comes to explaining why epistemological disputes about the evidential role of perceptual experience cannot satisfactorily be resolved without taking into account the structure of our cognitive awareness. Perceiving Reality examines the function of perception and its relation to attention, language, and discursive thought, and provides new ways of conceptualizing the Buddhist defense of the reflexivity thesis of consciousness-namely, that each cognitive event is to be understood as involving a pre-reflective implicit awareness of its own occurrence. Coseru advances an innovative approach to Buddhist philosophy of mind in the form of phenomenological naturalism, and moves beyond comparative approaches to philosophy by emphasizing the continuity of concerns between Buddhist and Western philosophical accounts of the nature of perceptual content and the character of perceptual consciousness.

Perception by Dennis Proffitt,Drake Baer Pdf

A groundbreaking popular psychology book that explores the deep connection between our body and our brain. Over decades of study, University of Virginia psychologist Dennis Proffitt has shown that we are each living our own personal version of Gulliver’s Travels, where the size and shape of the things we see are scaled to the size of our bodies, and our ability to interact with them. Stairs look less steep as dieters lose weight, baseballs grow bigger the better players hit, hills look less daunting if you’re standing next to a close friend, and learning happens faster when you can talk with your hands. Written with journalist Drake Baer, Perception marries academic rigor with mainstream accessibility. The research presented and the personalities profiled will show what it means to not only have, but be, your unique human body. The positive ramifications of viewing ourselves from this embodied perspective include greater athletic, academic, and professional achievement, more nourishing relationships, and greater personal well-being. The better we can understand what our bodies are—what they excel at, what they need, what they must avoid—the better we can live our lives.

Perception and Reality by Ralph Schumacher Pdf

This book is about the nature of sensory perception. Contributions focus on five questions, i.e.: (1) What distinguishes sensory perception from other cognitive states? Is it true, for instance, that perceptual content, in contrast to the phenomenal content of sensations like pain, always depends on the perceivers conceptual resources? (2) How do we have to explain the intentionality of perceptual states? (3) What is the nature of perceptual content? (4) In which sense do the objects of sensory perception depend on the constitution of the perceiver? How, for instance, do secondary qualities like colours, sounds and smells depend on the perception of human subjects? (5) How can we account for the intentionality of misperceptions? These questions are addressed through the interpretation of classical historical texts as well as in the context of systematical reflections. With contributions by Margaret Atherton, Michael Ayers, Peter Baumann, Martha Brandt Bolton, Thomas Grundmann, Gary Hatfield, Rolf-Peter Horstmann, Andreas Kemmerling, Bertram Kienzle, Martine Nida-Rümelin, Dominik Perler, Jay F. Rosenberg, Katia Saporiti, Ralph Schumacher, Gerald Vision, and Russell Wahl.

Visions of Reality by Alberto Rivas Pdf

This exciting book is an in depth study of abnormal perception and behavior. It examines how, without our knowledge, our brain secretly pushes, pulls, twists, and warps our perceptions with a mind of its own, without regard for morals, stubbornly persistent in wrongdoing, devoid of good sense or judgment, resistant to guidance or discipline, blindly and obstinately attached to some creed or opinion and intolerant toward others. This book explains how the nature of reality is distorted by our senses, turning our perceptions into an amalgam of illusions, delusions and deceptions, from which we determine our behavior. This is an excellent book written by an intellect well versed in his subject. The most abstruse complexities have been made comprehensible to the general reader; opening scenes that startle you with their depths of impenetrable mystery, and taking you on a fantastic journey through infinity. The author's skill and perfect pacing, as he presents scientific facts in the realm of psychological perception, stand alone in this extraordinary volume of knowledge.

The Perception Transformation by Chris Smythe Pdf

Perception + Beliefs = Reality Life is difficult... That is how a lot of people perceive their own life and it is true for them, because that is what they believe and their sub-conscious mind would 100% support them the idea that " life is hard ." But is life really that hard or we are just making it up in our own mind? What we perceive is what we believe, and all this is based on what we hear, see, feel, and think. Our perception drives our behaviors everyday and our thoughts are perhaps the most crucial components of our ability to perceive. In this book, we will discuss in detail on the power of our perception and explore how the way our mind works affects our perception. We will take a closer look at how each of us perceive the sight and sound he/she receives in a way which is very different from each others. We will also discuss the importance of perception in our understanding of what reality really is, and show you some "real life scenarios" which will consolidate your understanding of our perception. Here is what you are about to find out.. ** Perceived truths are NOT based on Real Truth. ** The Power to Choose a Response ** How your Habitat forms Your Habits ** How to Change Your Core Beliefs "The Perception Transformation" has been composed to help you achieve a better understanding of your world and how you perceive things around you. Only through a proper understanding of perception can you learn and see the light, even in your darkest of times. By altering what you perceive as negative experiences, you can alleviate your negative emotions and your self-imposed restriction on leading a happy and healthy life.

Consciousness and Reality: Hegel’s Philosophy of Subjectivity by J.L. Navickas Pdf

With the rise of analytical philosophy the criticism against Hegelianism has become increasingly shrill, and signs of an embarrassment that Hegel's philosophy should ever have arisen are noticeable in such inftuential works as those of Karl Popper and Hans Reichenbach, to mention but a few. However, many contemporary philosophers stress what is called subjectivity, conceiving reality as susceptible of methodical analysis only to the extent that it is in and for the subject. What is more, they not only insist on the importance of the subject for philosophy, but maintain that the subject must be conceived as the principal determinative of true objectivity. Since knowledge depends for its possibility on the inseverable correlatives of consciousness and reality, they would grant that a proper importance must be given to both subject and object. Still, exemplifying the relational principle within the unity of a dual structure, the subject serves as an exclu sive agent that provides ingress into the meaning of the object.

The Case Against Reality: Why Evolution Hid the Truth from Our Eyes by Donald Hoffman Pdf

Can we trust our senses to tell us the truth? Challenging leading scientific theories that claim that our senses report back objective reality, cognitive scientist Donald Hoffman argues that while we should take our perceptions seriously, we should not take them literally. From examining why fashion designers create clothes that give the illusion of a more “attractive” body shape to studying how companies use color to elicit specific emotions in consumers, and even dismantling the very notion that spacetime is objective reality, The Case Against Reality dares us to question everything we thought we knew about the world we see.
