Perforated Stones From California (Classic Reprint) by Henry W. Henshaw Pdf

Excerpt from Perforated Stones From California Few objects reward archaeologic search in Southern California so frequently as the so-called "perforated stones," and in the collections of any size they form a considerable percentage of the objects represented. While, probably, nowhere in the United States are they so abundant as in California, they occur in perhaps every portion of is this country, and also in other parts of the world, as in Europe, Australia, India, Africa, and South America. As in the case of many other aboriginal relics, it has been found difficult to assign definite uses to these perforated stones, especially in view of their great diversity as to size, shape, material, and the manner and extent to which they are finished. California specimens are made of sandstone, quartzite, steatite, and other kinds of stone - frequently, though by no means always, such as are rather easily worked. In Europe and in Peru specimens are found which are made of bronze. The California stones are most frequently circular or nearly circular, but occasionally they are irregularly oblong (Fig. 1). In the latter case the stones appear to have been left nearly or quite in their original shape, and specimens are sometimes seen which are two or three times longer than broad and with irregular outlines. In the case of such specimens it is evident that regularity of outline and fine finish were in no wise essential to their functions, whatever these may have been; nevertheless, such specimens are frequently highly polished, either on one side or on both sides, perhaps intentionally, or, more likely, from the friction of constant use. The Early Ethnography of the Kumeyaay by M. Steven Shackley Pdf

The Kumeyaay occupied the largest and most diverse territory of any Native Californian group--from arid deserts to alpine mountains, foothills, and a large expanse of coast, from what is now San Diego County to northern Baja California. Living as complex hunter-gatherers, the Kumeyaay combined elements of both Californian and Southwestern cultures, including an acorn economy, floodwater agriculture, and the production of paddle and anvil pottery. The Early Ethnography of the Kumeyaay includes the pioneering research of three anthropologists of the early part of the twentieth century--Thomas T. Waterman, Leslie Spier, and Edward W. Gifford. An introduction by M. Steven Shackley and Steven Lucas-Pfingst explores the particular perspective brought to the research by these early scholars, contrasted with recent anthropological research in the region.

The Complete Book of Classic Volkswagens by John Gunnell Pdf

Volkswagens are some of the most iconic and easily recognizable cars on the road, and The Complete Book of Classic Volkswagens is your definitive visual encyclopedia. The classic air-cooled Volkswagen Beetle, officially the Volkswagen Type 1, is regarded as one of the most important and well-engineered vehicles of the twentieth century. It was the most popular imported car in America in the 1960s, and before that it enjoyed a humble beginning as "the people's car" in its native Germany. The Complete Book of Classic Volkswagens encompasses the evolution of the popular Beetle as well as other variations of Volkswagen's air-cooled cars, vans, and trucks. Thoroughly illustrated, this is an invaluable reference to Volkswagen's collectible and iconic cars. The history of VW automobiles is just as colorful as the hues they were manufactured in, and this book illustrates the full story. German automakers originally sought to supply their countrymen with an automobile that was easy to mass produce. By 1938, they finalized the design for the VW "Bug"--the first rear-engined, rear-wheel-drive configured car. In its heyday, the rounded Beetle was produced at a rate of more than one million per year. Today, with more than 23 million cars built, the Beetle holds the record as the most-produced passenger car of all time. But the Beetle is only one part of The Complete Book of Classic Volkswagens. The rest--from Type 2 vans, pick-ups, and campers to the Type 113 "Super Beetle"--is included here. If you're the owner of a Volkswagen or if you just love their iconic look and you're interested in their evolution, this book deserves a place on your bookshelf.
