Trends in Contemporary Assamese Theatre by Namrata Pathak Pdf

It is the very nature of representation to be theatrical and self-referential. This book undercuts the fact that all representational knowledge is autonomous and sovereign. At times, theatrical representations can misguide and mislead. Representation can also ineluctably project ones own preferences and preoccupations. Thus, representation and subjective interpretation divulge into myriad domains. This book is concerned with the effects and consequences of representation and its politics. This book examines not only how language as well as representation produce meaning, but also how discursive knowledge connected to power regulates, conducts, and constructs identities and defines the way certain things are thought about practices and are studied. The book takes note of the fact that within the framework of performance, a performative subject does not wear a coherent identity as it is fragmented, decentered, simulated and is unstable, while being both virtual as well as actual. In the field of semiotics, theatre is historically and reciprocally affected by practice, especially within contingent conditions of time. In theatre semiotics, the new image of knowledge is that of turbulence. Here, knowledge is not so much a system as it is a confluence. Carrying this stance further we can say that contemporary Assamese theatre is characterised by shifting counter-voices and sub-textual underpinnings. This act forces reading into two directions: dialogic openness and variability of meaning that question the theatre directors as the only ones who know.

Performance Making and the Archive by Ashutosh Potdar,Sharmistha Saha Pdf

This book investigates theories and practices shaped by a performance’s relationship to the archive. The contributions in the volume examine how the changing nature of performance practices has made it imperative to understand how the archive and archival practices could add to the performance work. They explore a variety of themes, including artistic engagement with the archive in both conceptual and material terms; physical, virtual and digital forms; publicly and privately collected; oral, written and digital ways; or organized and unorganized collections. Finally, the volume examines how archives are modelled on existing structure and the ways in which they can be brought into discourses and practices of performance making through engagement and contestation. A novel approach to performance theory, this volume will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of performance studies, media and culture studies, studies of technology and art as also literature and literary criticism.

Contemporary Theatre of India by Chaman Ahuja Pdf

"The present book seeks to provide a generic introduction to the contemporary theatre scenario in different parts of India. Researched and written over a period of nearly a decade, it adopts an approach that may be best termed as quasi-academic and quasi-journalistic. Primarily, it affords understanding as well as interpretation of the trends, experiments and major works; but, in the process, it takes up serious issues for closer scrutiny. Nevertheless, the overall tone and tenor continue to be rather informal throughout. the book was born of interaction with both established and uprising exponents of the theatre arts -- playwrights, directors, performers, designers, critics, etc.; but it purposefully eschews critical or technical jargon. Ultimately, what we get is a phenomenal attempt to build a comprehensive as well as a perceptive overview of the complex and ever-growing dynamics of the contemporary theatres of India as practised in various regions, languages, cultures." -- Back cover.

Theatres of India by Ananda Lal Pdf

Theatres of India, edited by Professor Ananda Lal, is a comprehensive and accessible guide to theatre in India. The volume surveys both rural and urban modes of Indian theatre across its history of over 2000 years. The first section brings together entries that discuss theatres of India's linguistic regions. The second section includes entries on specific forms and genres, as well as on topics such as street theatre, music, and Tagore's dramatic oeuvre. The book avoids both the Western scholarship's obsession with traditional Asian forms of performance, as well as Indian city-based theatre workers' view that traditional forms do not even qualify as 'theatre'. 'Theatre' in this volume is defined as any form that contains theatre's fundamental element, acting. Importantly, the entries are accompanied by photographs of performances that allow us to view the 'visual-ness' of India's performance forms. In keeping with the highest standards of international reference publishing, Ananda Lal has compiled and edited material from several contributors so that each entry allows us to tap individual documentation and knowledge. Also included in this pioneering, authoritative, and collective resource are short bibliographies for every entry on the regional theatres. Theatres of India will be useful for general readers, theatre professionals, as well as students and researchers of theatre and performance studies.
