Personal Recollections of Abraham Lincoln (Classic Reprint) by Henry B. Rankin Pdf

Excerpt from Personal Recollections of Abraham Lincoln Lincoln lore has become so rich in recent years, and so voluminous withal, that he who would add to it must needs show cause why his book should be read. And yet, in spite of all that has been written, it cannot be said that we yet have a thoroughly satisfactory interpretation of the life and work and character of our First American. A few have had the necessary knowledge and sympathy, but their literary power has not always been adequate. Others have written well, but they have failed of insight and understanding. In the meantime the volume of facts, impressions, and reminiscences increases, and by assembling items from a variety of sources we are coming to a composite conception of our prophet-president that is at once vivid and satisfying. Personal Recollections and Impressions of Abraham Lincoln (Classic Reprint) by Francis Durbin Blakeslee Pdf

Excerpt from Personal Recollections and Impressions of Abraham Lincoln Someone has said, That nation is death-stricken that ceases to reverence the memory of her great men. And so we in America are raising memorials to our Washingtons, our Lincolns, our Grants, our Roosevelts, and are commemorating their birth days. The British are doing the same for their great heroes. There is a good deal in common between our British cousins and ourselves. John Wesley was a Britisher but there are millions in our land to-day who also claim him as theirs. No man could possibly be more of an American than was Abraham Lincoln, but today he belongs to the world. Personal Recollections of Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War (Classic Reprint) by James R. Gilmore Pdf

Excerpt from Personal Recollections of Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War A valued friend, who ranks as one of the ablest of American critics, to whom I have submitted these Recol lections for the purpose Of deciding whether they should, or should not, be given book publication, has just written me as follows: I have read the entire manuscript with very much interest and pleasure. It contains a great deal that is new to me and, I venture to say, that will be new to nine hundred and ninety-nine out of a thousand of the generation who took no active part in the affairs of the country in war times. Valuable side-light is thrown by your disclosures on some of the hidden springs and inner workings Of the times, and it appears to me that it is worthy to be preserved on account of its intrinsic value. In the hope that the reader may concur in the Opinion of this most excellent gentleman, this volume is given to the public. Personal Recollections of Lincoln (Classic Reprint) by Grenville M. Dodge Pdf

Excerpt from Personal Recollections of Lincoln My Comrades and Friends: If there is any person living who should be grateful for such an opportunity as this, and before such an audience, to pay his tribute to Abraham Lincoln, it is myself, for as President he raised me from a citizen to the highest command and highest rank in the army. He was my friend from the time I first met him until I helped to lay him away in Springfield, Illinois. No one can appreciate what that friendship and what his acts were to me, unless they have experienced the benefit of it as I have. Now, before I take up the subject I am to speak upon, I want to read to you Abraham Lincoln's own biography of himself, to show you from what a simple and low station he arose to be a great General, a great Statesman, a most just and kind ruler - the best of this era. In a letter to Mr. F. Fell he writes: I was born February 12, 1809, in Hardin county, Kentucky. My parents were both born in Virginia of undistinguished families - second families perhaps I should say. My mother, who died in my tenth year, was of a family of the name of Hanks, some of whom now reside in Adams and others in Macon counties, Illinois. My paternal grandfather. Herndon's Life of Lincoln by William Henry Herndon Pdf

Excerpt from Herndon's Life of Lincoln: The History and Personal Recollections of Abraham Lincoln A quarter OF A century has well-nigh rolled BY since the tragic death of Abraham Lincoln. The prejudice and bitterness with which he was assailed have disappeared from the minds of men, and the world is now beginning to view him as a great historical character. Those who knew and walked with him are gradually passing away, and ere long the last man who ever heard his voice or grasped his hand will have gone from earth. With a View to throwing a light on some attributes of Lincoln's char acter heretofore obscure, and thus contributing to the great fund of history which goes down to posterity, these vol umes are given to the world. If Mr. Lincoln is destined to fill that exalted station in history or attain that high rank in the estimation of the coming generations which has been predicted of him, it is alike just to his memory and the proper legacy of man kind that the whole truth concerning him should be known. If the story of his life is truthfully and courageously told - nothing colored or suppressed; nothing false either written or suggested - the reader will see and feel the presence of the living man. He will, in fact, live with him and be moved to think and act with him. If, on the other hand, the story is colored or the facts in any degree suppressed, the reader will be not only misled, but im posed upon as well. At last the truth will come, and no man need hope to evade it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Mr. And Mrs. Ralph Emerson's Personal Recollections of Abraham Lincoln (Classic Reprint) by Ralph Emerson Pdf

Excerpt from Mr. And Mrs. Ralph Emerson's Personal Recollections of Abraham Lincoln So impressed was I with his ability that when, four years later, we became involved in a very import ant litigation, we retained him to help. I paid him the largest retaining fee, he said, he had ever, up to that time, received. So important was the litigation that a host of lawyers were engaged on each side, in cluding such men as Senator Douglas, Gov. Wm. H. Seward, and quite a number of other lawyer mem bers of Congress. When the case came on for hearing in Cincinnati, as Lincoln had not had sufficient time to prepare, he did not speak, but he was present through the whole hearing, which consumed several days. We were limited to two lawyers on a side. Edwin M. Stanton, later the celebrated War Secretary, was one of those who spoke for us, delivering a speech which he had spent a very long time in studying up and preparing. So intensely interested was Lincoln in this speech, that, forgetting the dignity of a United States Court. Abraham Lincoln and Boston Corbett by John Wilkes Booth Pdf

Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln and Boston Corbett: With Personal Recollections of Each A recent imperfect brochure Of mine relating to Boston Corbett, who shot John Wilkes Booth, the assassinator Of President Lincoln, has brought requests for more Of the his tory Of this unique character. Its study forces us to link it with the death Of Lincoln, the end Of Booth and the capture Of Jefferson Davis, the inspiring angel Of Booth on his last mission. The recording Of real personal recollections assists in making genuine history, and furnishes a flavor delightful to the public taste. I will present some personal items about Lincoln and Corbett, and testimony from Official records - that we may see the characteristics of the two men, and then by an analysis Of other facts get a correct view Of the tragic end Of Booth, and Of his incentives to his mad career. We will examine the exciting and singular Kansas life Of Corbett. Bringing the truth out Of the many versions relating to the capture Of Jefferson Davis, we shall find that the ridiculous stories, published by the northern press, Of his fleeing in his wife's dress and crinoline, emanated in the fer tile brain Of the General commanding the raid into Alabama and Georgia, and had no foundation in fact. We can afford to bear honest testimony even at this late date. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Herndon's Lincoln, Vol. 1 by William H. Herndon Pdf

Excerpt from Herndon's Lincoln, Vol. 1: The True Story of a Great Life; The History and Personal Recollections of Abraham Lincoln Some persons will doubtless object to the narra tion of certain facts which appear here for the first time, and which they contend should have been consigned to the tomb. Their pretense is that no good can come from such ghastly exposures. To such over-sensitive souls, if any such exist, my answer is that these facts are indispensable to a full knowledge of Mr. Lincoln in all the walks of life. In order properly to comprehend him and the stir ring, bloody times in which he lived, and in which he played such an important part, we must have all the facts - we must be prepared to take him as he was. Some Recollections of Abraham Lincoln (Classic Reprint) by Joseph O. Cunningham Pdf

Excerpt from Some Recollections of Abraham Lincoln Early next morning all took the train bound northward for the convention, and were in due time among the many representatives from all portions of the state. I need hardly repeat what has become a matter of history, the doings of that memorable convention, of which, and of its platform utterances, Lincoln was the directing and controlling Spirit. And that, too, among the greatest and wisest political man agers of Illinois. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. ABRAHAM LINCOLN & MEN OF WAR-T by A. K. McClure Pdf

Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln and Men of War-Times: Some Personal Recollections of War and Politics During the Lincoln Administration I saw Mr. Lincoln many times during his Presidential term, and, like all of the many others who had intimate relations with him, I enjoyed his confidence only within the limitations of the necessities of the occasion. I do not therefore write these chapters assuming to have been the confidant of Mr. Lincoln; but in some things I did see him as he was, and, from necessity, knew what he did and why he did it. What thus happened to come under my own observation and within my own hearing often related to men or measures of moment then and quite as momentous now, when the events of the war are about to be finally crystallized into history.
