Research on the Selection of Officer Candidates and Cadets by Leo J. Kotula,Helen R. Haggerty Pdf
The objective of the CADET LEADERS Task is to develop and refine psychological measures for use in primary officer selection and evaluation programs, specifically in selecting students for the Reserve Officer Training Corps, the Army Officer Candidate Schools, and the U.S. Military Academy. Technical Research Report 1146 describes selection procedures now in effect for each of the programs and states the research basis for the measures used. The report also surveys current research requirements for officer procurement programs recently expanded by Act of Congress, research needed to adapt selection procedures to current OCS training requirements, and special studies for the USMA. Continuing research has resulted in the development, operational implementation, and refinement of tests of mental ability, physical proficiency, and leadership used in selecting cadets and officer candidates. Two new forms of the ROTC Qualifying Examination, RQ-8 and RQ-9, developed to screen students for admittance to the Senior ROTC Division (Military Science III) were implemented in the spring of 1966. A Basic ROTC Examination developed and validated for screening MS I students will be available for operational use in the fall of 1966. Further research will be undertaken to increase the effectiveness of screening and selection programs in conjunction with an intensive study of officer and leadership qualities as they emerge at the USMA and after commissioning.

The Oxford Handbook of Military Psychology by Janice H. Laurence,Michael D. Matthews Pdf
The critical link between psychology and the military is imprtant to recruiting, training, socializing, assigning, employing, deploying, motivating, rewarding, maintaining, managing, integrating, retaining, transitioning, supporting, counseling, and healing military members. These areas are hardly distinct, and the chapters in The Oxford Handbook of Military Psychology have contents that cross these boundaries. Collectively, the topics covered in this volume describe the myriad ways in which modern psychology influences warfare and vice versa. The extensive topics included come from within the areas of clinical, industrial/organizational, experimental, engineering, and social psychology. The contributors are top international experts in military psychology -- some uniformed soldiers, others academics and clinicians, and others civilian employees of the military or other government agencies. They address important areas in which the science and practice of psychology supports military personnel in their varied and complex missions. Among the topics addressed here are suitability for service, leadership, decision making, training, terrorism, socio-cultural competencies, diversity and cohesion, morale, quality-of-life, ethical challenges, and mental health and fitness. The focus is the ways in which psychology promotes the decisive human dimension of military effectiveness. Collectively, the 25 topical chapters of this handbook provide an overview of modern military psychology and its tremendous influence on the military and society as a whole.

The Oxford Handbook of Personnel Assessment and Selection by Neal Schmitt Pdf
Employee selection has long stood at the practical forefront of industrial/organizational psychology. Today's social, business, and economic climates require ongoing adaptations by those who select organizations' personnel, and research on the topic helps gauge the impact of these adaptations and their implications for human performance and potential. The Oxford Handbook of Personnel Assessment and Selection codifies the wealth of new research surrounding employee selection (web-based assessments, social networking, globalization of organizations), situating them alongside more traditional practices to establish the best and most relevant research for both professionals and academics. Comprising chapters from authors in both the private sector and academia, this volume is organized into seven parts: (1) historical and social context of the field of assessment and selection; (2) research strategies; (3) individual difference constructs that underlie effective performance; (4) measures of predictor constructs; (5) employee performance and outcome assessment; (6) societal and organizational constraints on selection practice; and (7) implementation and sustainability of selection systems. While providing a comprehensive review of current research and practice, the purpose of this handbook is to provide an up-to-date profile of each of the areas addressed and highlight current questions that deserve additional attention from researchers and practitioners. This compendium is essential reading for industrial/organizational psychologists and human resource managers.
