Philip IV and the World of Spain's Rey Planeta by Stephen M. Hart,Alexander W. Samson Pdf

Did Spain fall into decline or flourish in the seventeenth century? This edited collection looks at perceptions and representations of Philip IV, Spain's 'Planet King', and his government against the backdrop of the seventeenth-century General Crisis in Europe, wars, revolutions and a sovereign debt crisis. Scholars often associate Philip's reign (1621-1665) with decline, decadence, crisis, stagnation and adversity (as did many contemporaries); yet the glittering cultural and artistic achievements (enhanced by his patronage) of the period led it to be dubbed 'the' Golden Age. The book analyses these contradictions, examining Philip's own understanding of kingship and how he and his courtiers used art and ceremony to project an image of strength, tradition, culture and prestige, while, at the same time, the empire grappled with revolts in Europe and falling trade with its New World colonies.

Philip IV and the Government of Spain, 1621-1665 by R. A. Stradling Pdf

This book concentrates on the political history of the reign of Philip IV, and the role of the king within it. Philip is kept near the forefront, and issues and events are often seen - if sometimes critically - from his viewpoint. It is, therefore, a work of revision and rehabilitation, representing an attempt (against all other extant accounts) to establish Philip IV as a positive figure, with an autonomous character and political identity. A secondary, supportive, intention is to demonstrate that after the fall of Olivares, the king ruled and governed without a favourite (valido). This is the central theme in the most detailed treatment of the second half of the reign available in any language. Reference is made throughout to Philip's own words and actions. At the same time, the Olivares period itself is approached from a new perspective, some issues being examined with the use of new material. Although not intended as a conventional biography, the book retains several characteristics of the form, in that it is a 'career-study', part thematic, part chronological. Philip IV is examined also in relation to the political writing of the age, and to his court and capital in Madrid.

Paintings for the Planet King by Museo del Prado Pdf

Philip IV of Spain (ruled 1621-1665), known as the 'Planet King', shone more brightly in the sphere of the arts than would Louis XIV the Sun King after him. The focus of much of his patronage was the Buen Retiro Palace in Madrid, which was once hung with some eight hundred paintings, specially gathered during the 1630s in order to decorate it. They included work commissioned from the finest masters available in all Europe, including the court painters Velázquez, Zurbarán and Ribera (Spanish), the honorary court painter Rubens (Flemish), Claude Poussin (French), Jan Both and Herman van Swanevelt (Dutch), and Domenichino and Lanfranco (Italian). Much about the Buen Retiro Palace and its decoration has remained mysterious, as in the the course of time the palace itself lost its identity and its paintings were dispersed throughout the realm or were lost or stolen. But in 2005 the Museo del Prado has mounted a major exhibition reconstituting the essence of the Buen Retiro and displaying its finest paintings, many of them of great size and magnificence, as a group. This catalogue provides a comprehensive guide and display of the paintings that were once brought together for the Buen Retiro Palace.--Book jacket.

Strategy Before Clausewitz by Beatrice Heuser Pdf

This collection of essays combines historical research with cutting-edge strategic analysis and makes a significant contribution to the study of the early history of strategic thinking. There is a debate as to whether strategy in its modern definition existed before Napoleon and Clausewitz. The case studies featured in this book show that strategic thinking did indeed exist before the last century, and that there was strategy making, even if there was no commonly agreed word for it. The volume uses a variety of approaches. First, it explores the strategy making of three monarchs whose biographers have claimed to have identified strategic reasoning in their warfare: Edward III of England, Philip II of Spain and Louis XIV of France. The book then analyses a number of famous strategic thinkers and practitioners, including Christine de Pizan, Lazarus Schwendi, Matthew Sutcliffe, Raimondo Montecuccoli and Count Guibert, concluding with the ideas that Clausewitz derived from other authors. Several chapters deal with reflections on naval strategy long thought not to have existed before the nineteenth century. Combining in-depth historical documentary research with strategic analysis, the book illustrates that despite social, economic, political, cultural and linguistic differences, our forebears connected warfare and the aims and considerations of statecraft just as we do today. This book will be of great interest to students of strategic history and theory, military history and IR in general.

Artistic Circulation between Early Modern Spain and Italy by Kelley Helmstutler Di Dio,Tommaso Mozzati Pdf

This collection of essays by major scholars in the field explores how the rich intersections between Italy and Spain during the early modern period resulted in a confluence of cultural ideals. Various means of exchange and convergence are explored through two main catalysts: humans—their trips or resettlements—and objects—such as books, paintings, sculptures, and prints. The visual and textual evidence of the transmission of ideas, iconographies and styles are examined, such as triumphal ephemera, treatises on painting, the social status of the artist, collections and their display, church decoration, and funerary monuments, providing a more nuanced understanding of the exchanges of styles, forms and ideals across southern Europe.
