Filipino English and Taglish by Roger M. Thompson Pdf

English competes with Tagalog and Taglish, a mixture of English and Tagalog, for the affections of Filipinos. To understand the competing ideologies that underlie this switching between languages, this book looks at the language situation from multiple perspectives. Part A reviews the social and political forces that have propelled English through its life cycle in the Philippines from the 1898 arrival of Admiral Dewey to the 1998 election of Joseph Estrada. Part B looks at the social support for English in Metro Manila and the provinces with a focus on English teachers and their personal and public use of English. Part C examines the language of television sport broadcasts, commercials, interviews, sitcoms, and movies, and the language of newspapers from various linguistic, sociolinguistic, and sociocultural perspectives. The results put into perspective the short-lived language revolution that took place at the turn of the twenty-first century.

Philippine English by Margarete Misch Pdf

Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject English - Pedagogy, Didactics, Literature Studies, grade: 2,0, Martin Luther University, course: Postcolonial English, 16 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: The spread of English around the world has offered us a diverse range of varieties of English. Within the framework of Postcolonial English varieties, I have investigated the Philippine variety of English, which was a result of and emerged from its colonial background. In Braj Kachru's model of World English dialects, Philippine English belongs to what are called the 'outer circle' countries and is used in the major institutions as a legacy of colonisation. As a result, English has a great historical importance and serves as a lingua franca between the different ethnic and language groups. To fully understand the make-up of Philippine English, we need to take a look at the derivation and spread of the language. Aside from introducing general facts about the country, I will examine the origins of the language and the arrival of English in Philippine history. Furthermore, I will briefly explore the present-day language situation, especially the different local languages and the code-switching or code-mixing between the two official languages Filipino and English. By looking at the characteristic features of Philippine English, I want to show the general, phonological, morpho-syntactical and lexical differences from General American English. Finally, I want to discuss the significance of Philippine English for a teacher of foreign languages and to draw conclusions regarding the impact of English on the Philippines. II. Basic facts The Philippines are located in Southeast Asia, archipelago between the Philippine Sea and the South China Sea, east of Vietnam. The land has an area of 298,170 km and is slightly larger than Arizona. The Philippines consist of 7,107 islands in the western Pacific Ocean, of which only eleven are bigger than 2500 km

Dialects, Englishes, Creoles, and Education by Shondel J. Nero Pdf

This volume brings together a multiplicity of voices--both theoretical and practical--on the complex politics, challenges, and strategies of educating students--in North America and worldwide--who are speakers of diverse or nonstandard varieties of English, creoles, and hybrid varieties of English, such as African American Vernacular English, Caribbean Creole English, Tex Mex, West African Pidgin English, and Indian English, among others. The number of such students is increasing as a result of the spread of English, internal and global migration, and increased educational access. Dialects, Englishes, Creoles, and Education offers: *a sociohistorical perspective on language spread and variation; *analysis of related issues such as language attitudes, identities, and prescribed versus actual language use; and *practical suggestions for pedagogy. Pedagogical features: Key points at the beginning of each chapter help focus the reader and provide a framework for reading, writing, reflection, and discussion; chapter-end questions for discussion and reflective writing engage and challenge the ideas presented and encourage a range of approaches in dealing with language diversity. Collectively, the chapters in this volume invite educators, researchers, and students, across the fields of TESOL, applied linguistics, sociolinguistics, English, literacy, and language education, to begin to consider and adopt context-specific policies and practices that will improve the language development and academic performance of linguistically diverse students.
