English and American Philosophy Since 1800 by Arthur Kenyon Rogers Pdf

Excerpt from English and American Philosophy Since 1800: A Critical Survey I ought perhaps also to say that philosophy here, in line with the purpose I have just set forth, is taken in a some what restricted sense, to the exclusion of certain matters which a history of philosophy might be expected to cover. For the most part I propose to deal only with those central and illumi nating points Of view which constitute a man's philosophy in the distinctive sense; and the special philosophical disciplines, accordingly, receive attention only as they have some pretty direct bearing upon this. There are, for example, technical developments in the realm of logic and scientific method, that many would rate as Of large importance for the history of thought, of which no account in detail will be found in these pages. Even in the field of ethics, and of metaphysics itself, such technical problems as are separable from a comprehensive philosophic outlook are relatively neglected. Character and Opinion in the United States by George Santayana Pdf

George Santayana was one of the most influential twentieth-century philosophers. Because of his broad-ranging interests and lack of any permanent home in one particular country, he has often been stereotyped as a meditative philosopher removed from the world, living in what he himself called the "realm of spirit" among eternal essences. While there is some truth in this characterization, it is also true that Santayana was a penetrating analyst and critic of contemporary societies.'Character and Opinion in the United States' is his comprehensive critique of American thought and civilization and reflects the detached cosmopolitan perspective that lent his criticism its characteristic objectivity and strength. Santayana's subject here is the conflict of materialism and idealism in American life. In his view there exists a dualism in the American mind: One side, dealing with religion, literature, philosophy, and morality, tended to stay with inherited, old doctrines-the genteel tradition-and failed to keep pace with the other, practical side and its new developments in industry, invention, and social organization. Santayana traces the first mentality to Calvinism and its sense of sin, an attitude out of keeping with a new civilization and the dominance of practical interests. As a consequence of separating philosophy from everyday life, its study merely served religious and moral interests cut off from the free search for truth. At the heart of the book is Santayana's examination of the influential thought of William James and Josiah Royce, who typified for him the dilemma of American thought. The subordination of thought to social form and custom underlies Santayana's sharp critique of academic philosophy at Harvard where he early on studied and taught. He was disturbed by the very idea of philosophy as an academic discipline. Philosophy, he felt, should be an individual, original creation, "something dark, perilous, untested, and not ripe to be taught" Santayana's analysis of how social imperatives may impede the pursuit of knowledge remains pertinent to contemporary intellectual debate. This volume ill be of interest to philosophers, intellectual historians, and American studies specialists.

Philosophical Opinion in America by George Santayana Pdf

Excerpt from Philosophical Opinion in America On the other hand, a crude but vital America has sprung up from the soil, undermining, feeding, and transforming the America of tradition. This young America was originally composed of all the prodigals, truants, and adventurous spirits that the colonial families produced: it was fed continually by the younger generation, born in a spacious, half-empty world, tending to forget the old straitened morality and to replace it by another, quite jovially human. This truly native America was reinforced by the miscellany of Europe arriving later, not in the hope of founding a godly commonwealth, but only of prospering in an untrammelled one. The horde of immigrants eagerly accepts the external arrangements and social spirit of American life, but never hears of its original austere principles, or relegates them to the same willing oblivion as it does the constraints which it has just escaped - Jewish, Irish, German, Italian, or whatever they may be. We should be seriously deceived if we overlooked for a moment the curious and complex relation between these two Americas. Let me give you one illustration. Professor Norton, the friend of Carlyle, of Ruskin, and of Matthew Arnold, and, for the matter of that, the friend of everybody, a most urbane, learned, and exquisite spirit, was descended from the most typical of New England divines: yet he was loudly accused, in public and in private, of being un-American. On the other hand, a Frenchman of ripe judgement, who knew him perfectly, once said to me: 'Norton wouldn't like to hear it, but he is a terrible Yankee.' Both judgements were well grounded. Professor Norton's mind was deeply moralized, discriminating, and sad; and these qualities rightly seemed American to the French observer of New England, but they rightly seemed un-American to the politician from Washington. Philosophical opinion in America is of course rooted in the genteel tradition. It is either inspired by religious faith, and designed to defend it, or else it is created somewhat artificially in the larger universities, by deliberately proposing problems which, without being very pressing to most Americans, are supposed to be necessary problems of thought. Yet if you expected academic philosophers in America, because the background of their minds seems perfunctory, to resemble academic philosophers elsewhere, you would be often mistaken. There is no prig's paradise in those regions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Philosophy of Reality by James Mccosh Pdf

Excerpt from Philosophy of Reality: Should It Be Favored by America? With our eyes Open, we are apt to look on the scene at some distance, rather than on things that are pressingly near and supposed to be known. So it is with mod ern metaphysicians (it was different with the ancient Greeks);1 they direct their attention to more remote objects rather than those which are close to us, such as Reality. We know self and certain things around us as Real; as having 76 6'v, Ens, Being, Existence. Now this Reality requires to be carefully considered by students of the First Philosophy, as Aristotle happily called it. I am to show that Reality is a truth to be assumed, and that no attempt need or should be made to establish it by mediate proof. Of those who have made the attempt, it will be found that they have more in the conclusion than they have in the premises, and that in fact they have assumed reality in order to prove it. American Philosophy Today and Tomorrow (Classic Reprint) by Horace Meyer Kallen Pdf

Excerpt from American Philosophy Today and Tomorrow What each author presents here, he presents newly, and he presents it independently, as his personal Vision of today's philosophic problem and tomorrow's philosophic solution. Each has written down his own heart and mind, without any meeting with his fellow-contributors, without consultation, without dis cussion. Thus the book is automatically a representative cross section of American philosophy in the making 5 within the limits of its size and scope it provides a true sample of the disposition of living philosophy in the United States. These twenty-five essays come from the pens of twenty-five men of twenty-five different temperaments, origins, backgrounds, interests and avo cations. They tell in as many personal idioms why and how they come to believe as they do. From reading them there may arise a sense that an identical issue holds the attention of the various philosophers, with their different preoccupations and interests, that in Spite of the independence of their essays from one another, they manifest a consensus regarding the principles and methods of settling the issue. Or the reader may come to feel that no common View emerges, he may hear only separate and contradictory voices, each crying alone in its wilderness. Or he may find them separating into little groups and parties and sects, arrayed against one another and irreconcilable. Whichever of these three patterns the reader finds, he may be assured that he has a faithful picture of the struggle of ideas and ideals in American life upon the plane of philosophy. To give this picture an indispensable point of reference, the editors have suggested that each contributor write a brief ac count of himself with which to preface his essay. These, the editors believe, will be found not only to frame the picture, but to point it up. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Primal Roots of American Philosophy by Bruce Wilshire Pdf

Continuing his quest to bring American philosophy back to its roots, Bruce Wilshire connects the work of such thinkers as Thoreau, Emerson, Dewey, and James with Native American beliefs and practices. His search is not for exact parallels, but rather for fundamental affinities between the equally &"organismic&" thought systems of indigenous peoples and classic American philosophers. Wilshire gives particular emphasis to the affinities between Black Elk&’s view of the hoop of the world and Emerson&’s notion of horizon, and also between a shaman&’s healing practices and James&’s ideas of pure experience, willingness to believe, and a pluralistic universe. As these connections come into focus, the book shows how European phenomenology was inspired and influenced by the classic American philosophers, whose own work reveals the inspiration and influence of indigenous thought. Wilshire&’s book also reveals how artificial are the walls that separate the sciences and the humanities in academia, and that separate Continental from Anglo-American thought within the single discipline of philosophy.

The Philosophical Review, 1913, Vol. 22 (Classic Reprint) by J. E. Creighton Pdf

Excerpt from The Philosophical Review, 1913, Vol. 22 Nder the title Erkennen and Leben1 I have recently pub lished a book which I should like briefly to introduce to my American colleagues and friends. This can best be done, I think, by sketching the plan of the investigation, and indicating as clearly as possible the way in which it is carried out. The book was originally intended to form part of a larger work. It was primarily personal reasons - especially my present stay in America - which determined me to publish this introductory part of the work separately. But from the point of view of the subject matter treated it seemed also desirable to define the direction which an investigation of fundamental principles should take, before attempting to carry out the work in detail. On account of the confusion and the great differences of opinion at present prevailing in regard to the theory of knowledge, it was necessary that a critical analysis Of the main movements of the time should form a principal part of the undertaking. It is not, however, necessary that such a criticism should yield only negative results: it may also serve as a point of departure for the erection of a positive theory. Attempts to attain a knowledge of reality may be classified under two main heads: First, such a knowledge is supposed to result from the activity of the peculiar power of the intellect; second, knowledge is construed in terms of life, and in terms of the relations which thought bears to life as instrumental to the purposes of the latter. It is clear that knowledge gained by either one of these methods is very different from that obtained through the other. English and American Philosophy Since 1800 by Arthur Kenyon Rogers Pdf

Excerpt from English and American Philosophy Since 1800: A Critical Survey In making an attempt to estimate the philosophical ideas of the last century and a quarter, I have endeavored as a historian to be accurate, and as impartial as nature will permit a philosopher to be when dealing with opinions more or less out of harmony with his own. But it may prevent misleading anticipations if I confess at the start that the tracing of historical affiliations and historical causes has had only a secondary interest for me, and that the book as a whole is frankly propaganda, and designed to recommend one particular attitude as against competing attitudes; apart from this critical interest, it is not very likely that the work would have been carried through. If it were urged that fewer pages of criticism, and more attention to historical and descriptive data, would have resulted in a more generally useful volume, I do not know that I should be prepared to combat the claim; though I think it might be argued that one way, and at times the only way, to give an intelligible account of a philosophical doctrine, especially of the more esoteric sort, is by pointing out its limitations and obscurities. My real excuse however for writing a book in which criticism plays so large a part is that I wanted to do so. The particular philosophical standpoint which the following pages presuppose as a background, is one which, I am regret fully aware, many philosophers, perhaps most of them, will regard as lamentably crude and unadventurous. Typically two conceptions have been predominant in the history of thought - the psychological, and the logical.
