Physics With A High Luminosity Polarized Electron Ion Collider - Proceedings Of The Workshop On High Energy Nuclear Physics (Epic 99) by Leslie C Bland,J Timothy Londergan,Adam P Szczepaniak Pdf

This volume contains the proceedings of the Workshop on Physics with an Electron-Polarized Ion Collider (EPIC-99), jointly sponsored by the Indiana University Cyclotron Facility and Nuclear Theory Center, and the Institute for Nuclear Theory, University of Washington. It was held in Bloomington, Indiana, April 8-11, 1999. The purpose was to discuss important new physics phenomena which could be investigated with a high-luminosity asymmetric collider consisting of a beam of polarized electrons (with energy roughly 5 GeV), and a beam of polarized protons or other light ions of approximately 40 GeV energy. The Workshop brought together experts in the field who highlighted the unique potential for such a facility, and compared the prospects and challenges for this collider with present and proposed facilities around the world. The proceedings of this Workshop summarize our currently available knowledge on the physics potential for a polarized asymmetric collider. It provides a unique collection of information on the opportunities which such a facility would provide.

Physics with an Electron Polarized Light-Ion Collider by Richard G. Milner Pdf

Over the last several years, physicists interested in understanding the structure of matter at the fundamental partonic (quark and lepton) level have come to realize that an electron-ion collider can address many of the outstanding questions in hadronic physics. In Summer 2000, a new Long Range Planning Exercise was announced for nuclear physics in the United States, and the proponents of an electron-ion collider came together to make the scientific case for this machine. This workshop summarizes the physics case and machine design for a next generation facility to study the fundamental structure of hadrons. Topics include: Spin and flavor structure of the nucleon, semi-exclusive processes, heavy quarks/target fragmentation, e-A physics, and machine.

An Assessment of U.S.-Based Electron-Ion Collider Science by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine,Division on Engineering and Physical Sciences,Board on Physics and Astronomy,Committee on U.S.-Based Electron-Ion Collider Science Assessment Pdf

Understanding of protons and neutrons, or "nucleons"â€"the building blocks of atomic nucleiâ€"has advanced dramatically, both theoretically and experimentally, in the past half century. A central goal of modern nuclear physics is to understand the structure of the proton and neutron directly from the dynamics of their quarks and gluons governed by the theory of their interactions, quantum chromodynamics (QCD), and how nuclear interactions between protons and neutrons emerge from these dynamics. With deeper understanding of the quark-gluon structure of matter, scientists are poised to reach a deeper picture of these building blocks, and atomic nuclei themselves, as collective many-body systems with new emergent behavior. The development of a U.S. domestic electron-ion collider (EIC) facility has the potential to answer questions that are central to completing an understanding of atoms and integral to the agenda of nuclear physics today. This study assesses the merits and significance of the science that could be addressed by an EIC, and its importance to nuclear physics in particular and to the physical sciences in general. It evaluates the significance of the science that would be enabled by the construction of an EIC, its benefits to U.S. leadership in nuclear physics, and the benefits to other fields of science of a U.S.-based EIC.

Very High Multiplicity Physics Workshops by A. N. Sisakian,Joseph Manjavidze Pdf

This proceedings volume provides a comprehensive overview of the selected reports given at the International Workshops on Very High Multiplicity Physics from 2000 through 2007. These include results of original investigations dedicated to very high multiplicity processes, collective phenomena in quark gluon plasma, correlator analyses, polarization effects, and pion gas condensation, among others. The greater part of the material is devoted to basic technical aspects of the NICA/MPD project. Essential attention is paid to predictions of the multiperipheral model, perturbative QCD, physics of small x, and fractal analysis and statistical physics approaches to multiple production. The book is an important reference for physicists working in elementary particle physics. It is also a suitable read for undergraduate students.

High Energy Spin Physics by Karl-Heinz Althoff,Werner Meyer Pdf

The 9th International Symposium on High Energy Spin Physics, held in Bonn, 6-15 September 1990, attracted 280 participants from 16 countries. This meet ing covered not only fundamental experimental and theoretical spin phenomena but also technological developments in polarized beams and targets. For the first time intermediate energy spin physics with electron machines was discussed extensively. Highlights included the work on polarized high energy electron beams at LEP and TRISTAN and the failure of the standard model in connection with spin phenomena, in particular the growth of the spin asymmetry in violent proton-proton scattering. Also the presentation of different models in con nection with the still-unsolved 'proton spin crisis' and the proposals for four different experiments to determine the spin structure functions caused lively and sometimes controversial discussions. The Organizing Committee would like to thank all speakers for their excel lent talks, the conveners for the organization of the parallel sessions, and the International Advisory Committee for their advice. Four workshops preceded the symposium. 160 participants, among them many young physicists, discussed mainly technological spin problems. These papers are published in separate proceedings. We gratefully acknowledge the enthusiastic help of the members of our institute in preparing and running the conference and the workshops, especially Mrs. D. FaSbender, Mrs. E. Wendorf, Mrs. J. Wetzel, and Dr. U.Idschok.

Exclusive Reactions at High Momentum Transfer IV by Anatoly Radyushkin Pdf

The Proceedings include talks given at the 4th Workshop on Exclusive Reactions at High Momentum Transfer at Jefferson Lab, Newport News, VA USA, the world's leading facility performing research on nuclear, hadronic and quark-gluon structure of matter. Exclusive reactions are becoming one of the major sources of information about the deep structure of the nucleons and other hadrons. The workshop focused on the application of a variety of exclusive reactions at high momentum transfer, utilizing unpolarized and polarized beams and targets, to obtain information about nucleon ground state and excited state structure at short distances. This is a subject which is central to the programs of current accelerators and especially planned future facilities. The topics include: generalized parton distributions, deeply virtual Compton scattering, deeply virtual meson production (DVMP), transverse structure of hadrons (TMD), hadron form factors — elastic and transition, quantum chromodynamics (perturbative, non-perturbative, lattice calculations), and physics to study at an Electron Ion Collider. Contents:Hard Exclusive Processes: Perspectives (M Vanderhaeghen)Self-organizing Maps and Parton Distribution Functions (K Holcomb et al.)Transverse Structure of Hadrons (M Burkardt)Exposing the Dressed Quark's Mass (H L L Roberts et al.)Pion Form Factor: Status and Outlook (G M Huber)The Electric and Magnetic Form Factors of the Neutron with Super Bigbite (S Rioirdan et al.)Transverse Momentum Dependent Distributions in Hard Scattering (A Prokudin)Modeling the Transverse Momentum Dependent Parton Distributions (B Pasquini & C Lorcé)Introduction to EIC/Detector Concept (T Horn)and other papers Readership: Researchers and advanced graduate students in particle physics.
