Pilgrim Spirituality by Rodney Aist Pdf

A pilgrim-themed spirituality for Christian formation, Pilgrim Spirituality resources everyday Christianity, congregational life, social outreach, and religious travel through definitional frames of pilgrimage. Pilgrimage is a prominent biblical image. Yet, despite its contemporary resurgence, its capacity for Christian formation remains untapped. While our understanding of pilgrimage has been too narrow, we lack a definitional framework that fosters transformational practice. Definitions matter, thought creates possibilities, and intentionality enhances experience. Recognizing pilgrimage as a comprehensive expression of the Christian life, Pilgrim Spirituality provides tools for perceiving spiritual possibilities, engaging situational context, and interpreting lived experience. Espousing both personal and social holiness, Pilgrim Spirituality gives definitional status to the Other, attends to the self, and seeks the presence of God in the facts in which we find ourselves. Pilgrim Spirituality examines Christian concepts of time, place, and journey, while emphasizing the personal, corporate, incarnational, metaphorical, and tensional character of the pilgrim life. Exploring the motives, experiences, and practices of pilgrimage, Pilgrim Spirituality resources readers in their destinational pursuit of the Christian faith: the union of God, self, and the Other.

The Pilgrims' Way by Leigh Hatts Pdf

This guidebook details the Pilgrims' Way, an historic pilgrimage route to Canterbury Cathedral in Kent, home of the shrine of the martyred archbishop, St Thomas Becket. The route is described both from Winchester in Hampshire (138 miles) and London's Southwark Cathedral (90¼ miles), with an optional spur to Rochester Cathedral. With relatively easy walking on ancient byways, the route from Winchester is presented in 15 stages of 5-14 miles: it can be comfortably completed in under a fortnight. It follows a major chalk ridge through scenic countryside, taking in characterful towns and villages and historic churches. The route from Southwark is described in 10 stages and includes a visit to the ruined Lesnes Abbey. Detailed route description is accompanied by 1:50,000 OS mapping, advice on making the most of a trip and information on the historical background to the pilgrimage, key historical figures and local points of interest. Accommodation listings and details of facilities and transport links can be found in the appendices. Pilgrimages to Becket's shrine began within a few years of the his death in 1170, although Canterbury was a popular destination even before this time due to the nearby shrine of St Augustine. The route has featured in literature, drama and film, and forms the setting for Geoffrey Chaucer's famous Middle English work, The Canterbury Tales.

Mission Bound by Rodney Aist Pdf

Embracing pilgrimage as a comprehensive image of the Christian life, Mission Bound offers a transformative approach to short-term mission. Although the relationship of pilgrimage to short-term mission has been previously considered, it's been invariably dismissed: understood in terms of personal spirituality while its social applications and biblical images have been overlooked. Transcending the inner journey, pilgrimage is crossing boundaries, following God in unfamiliar places, both being and befriending the stranger, and walking alongside one another. As the imitation of Christ, pilgrimage embodies humility, service, love, and compassion as well as our vulnerability with others. Espousing the union of God, self, and the Other as the objective of the Christian life, the book casts the mission partnership as one of reciprocal relations based on the body of Christ. Addressing the entirety of the mission journey, including a spirituality of religious travel, the intragroup experience, and individual Christian formation, the heart of the book explores short-term mission through the lens of the hero's journey. Having loved, served, and listened to others, short-term missioners return home as more Christlike people where their lifelong journey of faith continues. Mission Bound is written as a pre-departure discussion guide for leaders and participants of short-term mission.

Crossroad by Charles Moseley Pdf

Charles Moseley - writer, scholar, traveller, speaker - records a journey alone, on foot, across a British countryside almost empty now but full of ancient memory, and records his meditations upon the intersection of past and present, of the holy and the humdrum. His many paths include the way to Walsingham, a Holy Week pilgrimage against the usual tide from Ely to Cambridge, St Herbert's Island in Derwentwater, the Holy Island off Arran, and further pilgrimages to Iona, and Lindisfarne. What makes such places numinous? What gives them that peculiar quality that even those who are sceptical of such things find strange, even challenging? This exceptional observation of the natural and internal landscapes revealed by solitary pilgrimage is a journey that cannot be finished this side of eternity.

CrossRoads by Jonathan Bryan,Alex Bryan Pdf

When the son grows into an adult quite different from the father in life-design, you might expect some stress and, eventually, some yearning to find common ground. By the time Alex was approaching adulthood at 40 and Jonathan was approaching dotage at 67, they had had many father-son challenges. Although they always enjoyed their conversations, they had divergent mind-sets. Then Jonathan had a whimsical thought: Maybe this son is a primitive Celt, a throwback to pre-christian celticism, at odds with his father's christianized celticism. Maybe they could confirm this during a trip to Ireland, a week in the Dingle, a peninsula loaded with Celtic leftovers. In this father-son pilgrimage they enjoyed sights and insights, talking non-stop to a new CrossRoads of understanding and companionship, if not full agreement. Upon return, each wrote an essay on ten topics, here presented in pairs, such as "Speaking of Gaelic" and "Gaelic? No Thanks"..."On Guinness" and "One-My-Guinness, Two-My-Guinness"..."Talking Stones" and "Stonework, Soulwork." Each essay examines something about their trip, then develops something about their relationship. Thus Jonathan and Alex celebrate their wonderful journey - through both the Dingle and life - and their deepening friendship. The book reflects, then, on fatherhood and sonship - and the paradoxical harmony that two quite different tunes can make.

Devotional Cross-Roads by Hedwig Röckelein,Galit Noga-Banai,Lotem Pinchover Pdf

The collection of essays presented in “Devotional Cross-Roads: Practicing Love of God in Medieval Gaul, Jerusalem, and Saxony” investigates test case witnesses of Christian devotion and patronage from Late Antiquity to the Late Middle Ages, set in and between the Eastern and Western Mediterranean, as well as Gaul and the regions north of the Alps. Devotional practice and love of God refer to people – mostly from the lay and religious elite –, ideas, copies of texts, images, and material objects, such as relics and reliquaries. The wide geographic borders and time span are used here to illustrate a broad picture composed around questions of worship, identity, religious affiliation and gender. Among the diversity of cases, the studies presented in this volume exemplify recurring themes, which occupied the Christian believer, such as the veneration of the Cross, translation of architecture, pilgrimage and patronage, emergence of iconography and devotional patterns. These essays are representing the research results of the project “Practicing Love of God: Comparing Women’s and Men’s Practice in Medieval Saxony” guided by the art historian Galit Noga-Banai, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and the historian Hedwig Röckelein, Georg-August-Universität Göttingen. This project was running from 2013 to 2018 within the Niedersachsen-Israeli Program and financed by the State of Lower Saxony.

Unholy Pilgrims by Tom Trumble Pdf

Sometimes the slow road can be the fastest way to sort things out. Relationship - challenged, with the résumé of a vagrant, Tom Trumble is at one of life's crossroads. So he takes up an offer to go on a seriously long walk - the ancient Christian pilgrimage of the Camino de Santiago de Compostela, the domain of the devout. Despite his good intentions, Tom's route takes him into every bar along the way while crossing paths with the loopy and the wise, the pious and the distinctly ungodly. He finds himself contending with song - happy evangelists, unlikely scholars and enlightened globetrotters, and randy backpackers out to bed every pilgrim they meet. Not to mention his own very restless demons, some of which lead him to confront troubles he thought he'd left at home. Unholy Pilgrims is an irreverent and engaging take on figuring out what the hell to do with your life.

Pilgrimage, Politics and Place-Making in Eastern Europe by John Eade,Mario Katić Pdf

Since the beginning of the anthropology of pilgrimage, scant attention has been paid to pilgrimage and pilgrim places in central, eastern and south-eastern Europe. Seeking to address such a deficit, this book brings together scholars from central, eastern and south-eastern Europe to explore the crossing of borders in terms of the relationship between pilgrimage and politics, and the role which this plays in the process of both sacred and secular place-making. With contributions from a range of established and new academics, including anthropologists, historians and ethnologists, Pilgrimage, Politics and Place-Making in Eastern Europe presents a fascinating collection of case studies and discussions of religious, political and secular pilgrimage across the region.

The Arma Christi in Medieval and Early Modern Material Culture by Lisa H. Cooper,Andrea Denny-Brown Pdf

The Arma Christi, the cluster of objects associated with Christ’s Passion, was one of the most familiar iconographic devices of European medieval and early modern culture. From the weapons used to torment and sacrifice the body of Christ sprang a reliquary tradition that produced active and contemplative devotional practices, complex literary narratives, intense lyric poems, striking visual images, and innovative architectural ornament. This collection displays the fascinating range of intellectual possibilities generated by representations of these medieval ’objects,’ and through the interdisciplinary collaboration of its contributors produces a fresh view of the multiple intersections of the spiritual and the material in the Middle Ages and Renaissance. It also includes a new and authoritative critical edition of the Middle English Arma Christi poem known as ’O Vernicle’ that takes account of all twenty surviving manuscripts. The book opens with a substantial introduction that surveys previous scholarship and situates the Arma in their historical and aesthetic contexts. The ten essays that follow explore representative examples of the instruments of the Passion across a broad swath of history, from some of their earliest formulations in late antiquity to their reformulations in early modern Europe. Together, they offer the first large-scale attempt to understand the arma Christi as a unique cultural phenomenon of its own, one that resonated across centuries in multiple languages, genres, and media. The collection directs particular attention to this array of implements as an example of the potency afforded material objects in medieval and early modern culture, from the glittering nails of the Old English poem Elene to the coins of the Middle English poem ’Sir Penny,’ from garments and dice on Irish tomb sculptures to lanterns and ladders in Hieronymus Bosch’s panel painting of St. Christopher, and from the altar of the Sistine Chapel to the printed prayer books of the Reformation.
