Pioneers of Science in America by William Jay Youmans Pdf

Excerpt from Pioneers of Science in America: Sketches of Their Lives and Scientific Work In this country the men who took a prominent part in the initiation of these wonderful changes were comparatively few, while the disadvantages they had to contend with were many and serious. Scattered over a large extent of undeveloped territory, unable to secure the benefits of co-operation, poor in pocket, and generally lacking the sympathy when they did not meet the active opposition of their fellow-men, the work they did as teachers and original investigators forms one of the most creditable chapters of our early history, and unques tionably paved the way for those later scientific achievements' of which as a nation we may well be proud. Surely the ca reers of these men are quite as worthy the contemplation of) About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Pioneers of Science by Oliver Lodge Pdf

Excerpt from Pioneers of Science This book takes its origin in a course of lectures 011 the history and progress of Astronomy arranged for me in the year 1887 by three of my colleagues (A. C. B., J. M., G. H. B.), one of whom gave the course its name. The lectures having been found interesting, it was natural to write them out in full and publish. If I may claim for them any merit, I should say it consists in their simple statement and explanation of scientific facts and laws. The biographical details are compiled from all readily available sources, there is no novelty or originality about them; though it is hoped that there may be some vividness. I have simply tried to present a living figure of each Pioneer in turn, and to trace his influence on the progress of thought. I am indebted to many biographers and writers, among others to Mr. E. J. C. Morton, whose excellent set of lives published by the S.P.C.K. saved me much trouble in the early part of the course. The Pioneer Fringe (Classic Reprint) by Isaiah Bowman Pdf

Excerpt from The Pioneer Fringe Six years ago, encouraged by David White, at that time the Home Secretary of the National Academy of Sciences and an officer Of the National Research Council, I presented a plan of research in pioneer settlement to the latter organization. After two years' consideration by a special committee, and by the Division of Geology and Geography, the National Research Council approved the plan and recommended it to the Social Science Research Council. The latter organization, after similar consideration for two years, gave its approval and provided generously for the support of the first project. This made it possible for the members of the Advisory Committee of the American Geographical Society to prepare a detailed plan of research in the Canadian field, a plan that has since been vigorously prosecuted by Canadian scholars through the Canadian Pioneer Problems Committee, with results that Will be published in the near future. At the same time the Council Of the American Geographical Society generously set up a separate fund for the support of related work on a more limited scale in several other regions. The Social Science Research Council and the American Geo graphical Society have also contributed to a joint fund for the publication of a series of papers entitled Pioneer Settlement by thirty authors who are specialists in the field and familiar with the regions With which they deal. The Pioneer Fringe is intended as an introduction to this companion volume and to the various publications that the plan will call into being and deals with the ideas that moved the three supporting organizations to give their approval. Half Hours With Modern Scientists (Classic Reprint) by Thomas Henry Huxley Pdf

Excerpt from Half Hours With Modern Scientists The title of this Series of Essays - Half Hours with Modern Scientists - suggests a variety of thoughts, some of which may not be inappropriate for a brief introduction to a new edition. Scientist is a modern appellation which has been specially selected to designate a devotee to one or more branches of physical science. Strictly interpreted it might properly be applied to the student of any department of knowledge when prosecuted in a scientific method, but for convenience it is limited to the student of some branch of physics. It is not thereby conceded that nature, i. e., physical or material nature is any more legitimately or exclusively the field for scientific enquiries than spirit, or that whether the objects of science are material or spiritual, the assumptions and processes of science themselves should not be subjected to scientific analysis and justification. There are so-called philosophers who adopt both these conclusions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. History of every variety has been made in the City of Brotherly Love. Pioneers of Progress by W. W. Bryant Pdf

Excerpt from Pioneers of Progress: Men of Science; Galileo N ow Vincenzio himself, as shown in his writings on musical theory, had a rooted objection to taking things on trust, so it is not surprising that Galileo found him self continually at issue with his teachers in philosophy, and thus early struck the keynote of his stormy career. What passed for philosophy in those days had degenerated almost entirely into blind repetition of the statements and doctrines of ancient philosophers, and particularly of Aristotle. But Aristotle and the Greek philosophers generally were not accustomed to put their highly speen lative theories to the test of actual experiment, however easy and obvious such experiment might be. They contented themselves with discussions as to what ought to happen according to their preconceived notions of physical laws, rarely attempting to see what does actu ally happen. Galileo's mind worked in a very different way, and refused to bind or blind itself in such a manner, so he promptly questioned what appeared to be doubtful statements and did not hesitate to contradict if he felt he had a clear case against them. He soon gained such notoriety, in this way that he was nicknamed the Wrangler by his fellow-students, and heartily disliked by the pro fessors, who were not only sticklers for tradition, but probably found it less troublesome to rely on memory than on intelligence. The Role of Students in Pioneering New Fields of Science and Technology by Michael A. Rappa Pdf

Excerpt from The Role of Students in Pioneering New Fields of Science and Technology: December 1991 A recent international survey of more than seven-hundred scientists working on the development of neural networks provides evidence that pioneering scientists are different in both their motivations to enter and their persistence to remain in the field.1 Pioneers are defined as those scientists who initiate and continue working in a field before it is widely recognized as significant, or perhaps even legitimate by their peers. In comparison to Other scientists, pioneers are more deeply influenced by the intrinsic intellectual appeal of the subject matter and are less influenced by the social dynamics of the research community. This conclusion holds when controlling for a scientist's age and years of professional experience. The results lend support to the contention that scientists' problem choices are determined by cognitive factors that are internal to science, while at the same time show the relevance of social factors operating broadly within a research community. Hence, pioneers may be an important factor to consider when sorting-out the long-standing debate over problem choice in science (for example, see Zuckerman, 1978; Gieryn, 1978; Ziman. Scientific Romances by Charles Howard Hinton Pdf

Excerpt from Scientific Romances: First Series There are two ways of passing beyond the domain of practical certainty, and of looking into the vast range of possibility. One is by asking, What is knowledge? What constitutes experience If we adopt this course we are plunged into a sea of speculation. Were it not that the highest faculties of the mind find therein so ample a range, we should return to the solid ground of facts, with simply a feeling of relief at escaping from so great a confusion and contradictoriness. Introduction to General Science by Percy Elliott Rowell Pdf

Excerpt from Introduction to General Science: With Experiments However much we may theorize, and try to impress the youth with the proper conception of man's place in nature, the individual young person will continue to consider himself as the center of the universe. Immediate needs and close surroundings are what interest him. It is not until he has learned about these, and has followed back to their sources and causes some of the phenomena which have seemed simple and matter of fact, that he begins to realize that the distant forces have more effect upon his existence than the near-by, everyday happenings. Perhaps it is well, then, at the beginning of science study, to take his point of view, and lead him to follow each apparently simple need or desire, and to arouse in him the habit of seeking for a cause, and looking beyond the present and immediate to the future and the ultimate. It may be truly said that in a General Science course, "All roads lead to Rome," for the course may be commenced anywhere, and it will lead to a study of all science. In fact, if the pun may be forgiven, in a General Science course, "All roads lead to roam," and the pupil, after he is started, needs but to be guided. That is the purpose of this book. It is not easy to teach a course in general science successfully. There is always the temptation to specialize in some particular part, usually the part which the teacher likes best, and about which he knows most. If this temptation is not resisted, the course ceases to be general. The value of a General Science course is twofold. Pioneers of Evolution From Thales to Huxley by Edward Clodd Pdf

Excerpt from Pioneers of Evolution From Thales to Huxley: With an Intermediate Chapter on the Causes of Arrest of the Movement This book needs only brief introduction. It at tempts to tell the story of the origin of the Evolution idea in Ionia, and, after long arrest, of the revival of. That idea in modern times, when its profound and permanent influence on thought in all directions, and, therefore, on human relations and conduct, is apparent. Between birth and revival there were the cen turies of suspended animation, when the nepenthe of dogma drugged the reason; the Church teaching, and the laity mechanically accepting, the sufficiency of the Scriptures and of the General Councils to de cide on matters which lie outside the domain of both. Hence the necessity for particularizing the causes which actively arrested advance in knowledge for sixteen hundred years.
