Pirates and Piracy by E. Keble Chatterton Pdf

Pirates and acts of piracy were not limited to the Caribbean Sea and the 16th and 17th centuries, as is commonly thought, but ranged far across time and place. Men of adventure who took to pirating in classical times around the Mediterranean are featured in these stirring true tales of high-seas treachery. Gripping narratives of corsairs, freebooters, and privateers—from the Vikings in their longships to the pirates of the Levant and the China Seas—come vividly to life in these swashbuckling, compulsively readable chronicles. Here are riveting accounts of North Sea brigands, Elizabethan seamen, and Turkish pirates; of notorious plunderers like Henry Morgan, Edward (Blackbeard) Teach, and Captain Kidd; as well as the pirates of Borneo and China. Enhanced with sixteen illustrations, the fascinating text recounts as well the stories of daring men who intercepted enemy ships for King and country (and to enrich their own purses). Sure to be welcomed by armchair sailors, this highly readable study of the maritime marauders who sailed under the Black Flag will also appeal to naval historians and old salts.

Pirates in Paradise by Stefan Eklöf Pdf

Southeast Asia contains some of the world's busiest shipping waters, particularly the Indonesian archipelago, the Straits of Malacca and South China Sea. The natural geography and human ecology of maritime Southeast Asia makes the area particularly apt for piracy. It is perhaps no surprise, then, that these waters are also the world's most pirate-infested, accounting for over a third of the total number of pirate attacks world-wide. The figures have increased in recent years, as transnationally organized crime syndicates have extended their activities in the area. Meanwhile, the capacity of the state authorities in the region to suppress piracy appears to have declined, fuelling suspicions that sections of the maritime authorities are colluding with some of the organized pirate gangs that they are supposed to be combating. Not surprisingly, piracy has a long history in the region, and in several instances during the last 250 years, pirates have disrupted peaceful trade and communications. This text traces the shifting character and development of Southeast Asian piracy from the 18th century to the present day, demonstrating how political, economic, social and technological factors have contributed to change - but have by no means exterminated - the phenomenon. -- Description from http://www.amazon.co.uk (Oct. 19, 2011).

The Expedition to Borneo of H M S Dido by Henry Keppel Pdf

Naval adventure in the Far East during the 1840s This book is a highly regarded classic of naval history. Its author was the captain of the ship, HMS Dido, which is central to the events recounted within its pages. The subject matter of his tale of adventure could hardly be more romantic or evocative. This is an account of the Royal Navy on duty and in action in the early part of Queen Victoria's long reign, sailing the tropical waters of the furthest corner of her burgeoning empire. Here the reader will enter the nineteenth century world of the East Indies-a place of unpredictable exotic seas bordered by fetid, steaming jungles perilously populated by head-hunting Dyaks and merciless Malay pirates who scourged the seaways only to disappear into hidden creeks to their defended stockades. Here the reader will be introduced to the legendary 'White Rajah' of Sarawak, James Brooke, who under the Union Flag all but forged a kingdom for himself in Borneo and who spread his influence over the entire region. All readers who are fascinated by the doings of the Royal Navy in the last days of sail, here on a mission to make the tropical seas safe for trade, will find much to satisfy them within the pages of Keppel's account. Available in softcover or hardcover with dust jacket for collectors.

Pirates by Jennifer Willis Pdf

The surprising success of Pirates of the Caribbean, a new screen adaptation of the classic Peter Pan, and the Russell Crowe film Master and Commander have fueled interest in seagoing swashbucklers. There is a rich literature on pirates -- both in fiction and nonfiction. This collection offers excerpts from the works of contemporary authors: Patrick O'Brian's riveting account of a sea battle with Borneo's pirates will enthrall his fans; Farley Mowat's The Black Joke is a rousing adventure of the rum-running set in the 1930s and written in the tradition of the great classic pirate tales. Readers will also discover and rediscover the most infamous pirates of yore, from Treasure Island's Long John Silver to Peter Pan's Captain Hook. They'll encounter pirate adventures from neglected classics such as L. Frank Baum's Pirates in Oz, Alexandre Dumas's The Count of Monte Cristo and Rafael Sabatini's Captain Blood. And they'll find accounts of the dastardly deeds of female pirates both real (Anne Bonney and Mary Read) and imagined (Arthur Ransome's Chinese pirate Miss Lee). Pirates also draws upon colorful true-life accounts and authentic first-person narratives of pirates -- and their victims -- discovered in nearly forgotten works such as The Pirates Own Book and Captured by Pirates.
