Despite being the illegitimate daughter of a prince, Gillian Dryden is happily ignorant of all social graces. After growing up wild in Italy, Gillian has been ordered home to England to find a suitable husband. And Charles Valentine Penley, the excessively proper, distractingly handsome Duke of Leverton, has agreed to help transform her from a willful tomboy to a blushing debutante. Powerful and sophisticated, Charles can make or break reputations with a well-placed word. But his new protégée, with her habit of hunting bandits and punching earls, is a walking scandal. The ton is aghast . . . but Charles is thoroughly intrigued. Tasked with taking the hoyden in hand, he longs to take her in his arms instead. THRONES by Gloria Parnham Bradfield Pdf

Gloria Parnham Bradfield has captured the political intrigue, suspense and humor of 19th Century American life in her insightful new novel, THRONES. Set in 1848, Bradfield´s story transports the reader into the smoldering political climate of the antebellum South where men manipulated, conspired and debated the future of the country as they steeled their positions for what was to come. Bradfield´s years of period research are reflected in the pages of this extremely well-crafted tale. The author snipped a hole in history and inserted fictional land owner Nathan Coulter, his sons Justin and Dan, and Rebecca Chancellor, prococious daughter of the junior Senator of South Carolina. The characters´ lives intersect with the explosive issues of the day as events lead them from New York to the White House to Virginia´s Tidewater and the plantations of South Carolina. The well-honed use of dialogue, dialect, debates and dissention help develop the issues of the 1840s and 1850s in a manner relevant to our time. Addressing the predominant topic of the era, THRONES explores the political and economic issues that tied the country to slavery while depicting the slaves´ profound contribution to the music, language, cuisine and culture that make up the South´s rich heritage. Historical fiction devotees and political enthusiasts will be mesmerized by the political partnerships and secret dealings recounted in Bradfield´s exciting new book. THRONES is a compelling and enriching read.

Gender and Relatability in Digital Culture by Akane Kanai Pdf

This book explores the practices and the politics of relatable femininity in intimate digital social spaces. Examining a GIF-based digital culture on Tumblr, the author considers how young women produce relatability through humorous, generalisable representations of embarrassment, frustration, and resilience in everyday situations. Relatability is examined as an affective relation that offers the feeling of sameness and female friendship amongst young women. However, this relation is based on young women’s ability to competently negotiate the ‘feeling rules’ that govern youthful femininity. Such classed and racialised feeling rules require young women to perfect the performance of normalcy: they must mix self-deprecation with positivity; they must be relatably flawed but not actual ‘failures’. Situated in debates about postfeminism, self-representation and digital identity, this book connects understandings of digital visual culture to gender, race, and class, and neoliberal imperatives to perform the ‘right feelings’. Gender and Relatability in Digital Culture will be of interest to students and scholars across a range of disciplines including gender studies, cultural studies, sociology, and media studies.
