To Save an Empire by Allan R Gall Pdf

In 1877, when Russia attacks the Ottoman Empire, Sultan Abduelhamit II must fight a devastating war to preserve his ethnically diverse territories that stretch across three continents. At home, he feels threatened from within by Mithat Pasha, a respected reformer, who has popular support for a constitution that would curb the sultan's authority and give the people a voice in their government. Aware of these challenges, Abduelhamit's Belgian wife, Flora Cordier, hopes to remain his confidante and helpmate as he decides how to govern: the iron-fisted rule of his ancestors, the democracy proposed by Mithat, or the diplomacy that exposes his weakened military power. No matter his choice, he is responsible for the suffering of his people. To Save an Empire explores the impact of religious and ethnic conflict in the Ottoman Empire of the late 19th century on the lives of ordinary people-Muslims, Christians, and Jews. Refugees flee atrocities that incite revenge, but also arouse charity and love. A story of love found and lost, of war and its consequences. Today's Balkans and Middle East emerge from the era's political forces of terrorism, imperialism, nationalism, and religion. It is a modern story.______________________________________________________________________________"e;[Gall]...artfully brings to life the political intrigues of an empire sliding into irrelevance. The Ottoman Empire emerges as a kind of protagonist all its own, eager to become strengthened by its embrace of modernity and the West, but also anxious about surrendering its cultural and religious identity. ... A magnificently researched tale of a troubled empire that's also dramatically captivating."e; - Kirkus reviews "e;Fiction as only history can tell it, all the more moving because we know it is not fiction. ...a compelling story."e; - Bulent Atalay, physicist and author of Math and the Mona Lisa and Leonardo's Universe

The Rocky Road to the Great War by Nicholas Murray Pdf

Nicholas Murray's The Rocky Road to the Great War examines the evolution of field fortification theory and practice between 1877 and 1914. During this period field fortifications became increasingly important, and their construction evolved from primarily above to below ground. The reasons for these changes are crucial to explaining the landscape of World War I, yet they have remained largely unstudied. The transformation in field fortifications reflected not only the ongoing technological advances but also the changing priorities in the reasons for constructing them, such as preventing desertion, protecting troops, multiplying forces, reinforcing tactical points, providing a secure base, and dominating an area. Field fortification theory, however, did not evolve solely in response to improving firepower or technology. Rather, a combination of those factors and societal ones-for example, the rise of large conscript armies and the increasing participation of citizens rather than subjects-led directly to technical alterations in the actual construction of the fieldworks. These technical developments arose from the second wave of the Industrial Revolution in the late nineteenth century that provided new technologies that increased the firepower of artillery, which in turn drove the transition from above- to belowground field fortification. Based largely on primary sourcesùincluding French, British, Austrian, and American military attache reports-Murray's enlightening study is unique in defining, fully examining, and contextualizing the theories and construction of field fortifications before World War I.

The Defense of Plevna by William Herbert Pdf

Russia is determined to have her tenth attempt upon Stamboul. Neither the conference at Constantinople (December 1876) nor the new Constitution of the Ottoman Empire (December 23, 1876), which was played by the Porte, not unskillfully, as a trump card showing a desire to please, nor, lastly, the first and only session of the Turkish Parliament (opened March 19, 1877), could avert an appeal to arms, and on April 24, 1877, the Czar Alexander II., totally unprovoked, being then in Kishineff (Bessarabia) for the maneuvers, declared war against the Sultan Abdul Hamid II., after having prepared for it for nearly two years. The sympathy of Europe is generally with Russia ; in England alone public opinion held on the whole with the Turks. The Powers declare their neutrality. Romania being forced to abstain for the present from active co-operation, concludes with Russia an alliance of temporary passive, armed support ; Servia, sore and smarting, kept in the background, prepares to pounce like a vulture upon the prey when Turkey had fallen. Brave little Montenegro again takes the field. Thus broke out the tenth Russo-Turkish War. It promised to be all the more bloody and barbaric from the fact that the rulers on both sides took care to stamp it as a ' holy ' one. A really grand patriotic movement made itself felt throughout the Turkish possessions. It was a question of existence. Russia meant annihilation of the Ottoman Empire in Europe, and all the world knew it.
