A History of Aeronautics (Classic Reprint) by Evelyn Charles Vivian Pdf
Excerpt from A History of Aeronautics In this work is no claim to originality - it has been a matter mainly of compilation, and some stories, notably those of the Wright Brothers and of Santos Dumont, are better told in the words of the men themselves than any third party could tell them. The author claims, however, that this is the first attempt at recording the facts of development and stating, as fully as is possible in the compass of a single volume, how flight and aerostation have evolved. The time for a critical history of the subject is not yet. In the matter of illustrations, it has been found very difficult to secure suitable material. Even the official series of photographs of aeroplanes in the war period is curiously incomplete, and the methods of censorship during that period prevented any complete series being privately collected. Omissions in this respect will probably be remedied in future editions of the work, as fresh material is constantly being located. Aeronautics by Edwin Bidwell Wilson Pdf
Excerpt from Aeronautics: A Class d104 For several years I have been giving, at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, courses of lectures on those portions of dynamics, both rigid and fluid, which are fundamental in aeronautical engineering. The more elementary parts of these courses, covering about ninety out of one hundred fifty lectures, are found in this book. Although it has been customary to teach the two subjects of rigid and of fluid dynamics in parallel or in rapid alternation, so that they are both developed as needed for each other and for the accompanying courses on airplane and airship design, it has seemed better in making a presentation in book form to separate them. The student should have completed Chaps. IX-XII of the fluid mechanics before undertaking the latter part of Chap. VI. A number of topics which might well be included in a work on aeronautics have been omitted from the book, as they are from my lectures, because they can be taken up so much better in the parallel courses on design. In the preparation of the selected material I have had constantly in mind my own experience and needs relative to effective classroom instruction, particularly in the matter of lists of exercises. Although my students are supposed to have completed thorough courses in calculus, including the elements of differential equations, and in theoretical and applied mechanics, it has seemed better to assume too little, rather than too much, as retained in usable form. I hope, therefore, that with the present interest in aeronautics in particular, and in applied mathematics in general, this work may prove stimulating to other than technical students of aeronautical engineering. Nobody can issue a book on aeronautics at this time without lamenting the fact that much, if not most, of the progress in theory which has been made during the war, particularly in England, has not yet been released for publication. To wait, however, until its release and subsequent digestion would mean a long delay. Indeed from one viewpoint no time is more appropriate for the printing of these elementary, introductory, and orienting lectures than just now when there impends a deluge of material for advanced study. Excerpt from Aviation: An Introduction to the Elements of Flight There is no evading the fundamental technology of any real subject, whether commercial, scientific, or political by nature; the reader must ever provide the interest if he would receive any return whatsoever for his purchase of the author's capital. In this case, as the capital is so small, the initial interest on the reader's part must be all the greater. The Conquest of the Air by Alphonse Berget Pdf
Excerpt from The Conquest of the Air: Aeronautics Aviation, History: Theory: Practice If one also recalls the fact that it was in the course of this same year, 1909, that the two most remarkable voyages were accomplished by dirigible balloons, which have definitely asserted the possibility of their practical application, one will understand that the highway of the atmosphere is now open, and that the Conquest of the Air has become an accomplished fact. The moment is therefore Opportune to explain how this conquest has been effected, to describe the principles of the construction and control of aerial vessels, dirigible balloons, or aviation apparatus; that is my reason for writing this book. The Design of Aeroplanes (Classic Reprint) by Arthur W. Judge Pdf
Excerpt from The Design of Aeroplanes The present volume is the outcome of an endeavour to fulfil an aeronautical need, which must have been experienced by most designers, draughtsmen, and students, in entering the field of aeronautics - namely, the absence of collected data and design methods. In other branches of engineering one finds numerous design and pocket books containing a compendium Of useful information, and fulfilling most of the ordinary requirements. In aeronautical engineering, however, although there are numerous works of a more or less popular and romantic nature, yet the absence of similar design and pocket books is marked, no doubt on account of the more recent development of this branch. The chief Object of the present work is to present in a simple yet brief form the principles underlying the design of aeroplanes from the standpoint of the mechanical engineer, and to collect and tabulate some of the data which experience has shown to be useful in design work. A chapter has been included dealing with the more important mechanical principles involved in aeronautical design, with an indication as to their utility and application. Obviously, the subject Of aeroplane design is now so wide that it is impossible either to treat each branch of the subject in full, or to embrace every branch, but it is hoped in the complete series of aeronautical manuals to cover most of the ground; the author, for these reasons, seeks the indulgence Of the reader for any apparent incompleteness in the present work. Excerpt from Aeronautics: Volume 9-10; July, 1911 June, 1912 Etampes, France, July 21. - Mme. Deniz Moore was killed at the aerodrome here to night by a fall in an aeroplane. Mme. Moore had already made several fine ascents and was about to make a high fight. When about one hundred and fifty feet in the air her biplane was caught by a gust of wind and capsized. It fell straight to the earth, and she was crushed beneath it. Mme. Moore was a French woman, about 25 years old. She had hoped to obtain a pilot's license next week. Textbook of Naval Aeronautics (Classic Reprint) by Henry Woodhouse Pdf
Excerpt from Textbook of Naval Aeronautics Our people have at least realized the possibili ties of aeronautics, and see that aeronautics can be made the most effective agency available, not only to serve the Allies, but even to save the United States. They now see that, while it is well to train a young man to use a musket in an infantry company, more military usefulness can be gotten out of men like mechanics, chauffeurs, and technicians, by putting them in swiftly moving aeroplanes and dirigibles.
