A History of Aeronautics (Classic Reprint) by Evelyn Charles Vivian Pdf

Excerpt from A History of Aeronautics In this work is no claim to originality - it has been a matter mainly of compilation, and some stories, notably those of the Wright Brothers and of Santos Dumont, are better told in the words of the men themselves than any third party could tell them. The author claims, however, that this is the first attempt at recording the facts of development and stating, as fully as is possible in the compass of a single volume, how flight and aerostation have evolved. The time for a critical history of the subject is not yet. In the matter of illustrations, it has been found very difficult to secure suitable material. Even the official series of photographs of aeroplanes in the war period is curiously incomplete, and the methods of censorship during that period prevented any complete series being privately collected. Omissions in this respect will probably be remedied in future editions of the work, as fresh material is constantly being located. The Conquest of the Air by Alphonse Berget Pdf

Excerpt from The Conquest of the Air: Aeronautics Aviation, History: Theory: Practice If one also recalls the fact that it was in the course of this same year, 1909, that the two most remarkable voyages were accomplished by dirigible balloons, which have definitely asserted the possibility of their practical application, one will understand that the highway of the atmosphere is now open, and that the Conquest of the Air has become an accomplished fact. The moment is therefore Opportune to explain how this conquest has been effected, to describe the principles of the construction and control of aerial vessels, dirigible balloons, or aviation apparatus; that is my reason for writing this book. The Early History of the Airplane (Classic Reprint) by Orville Wright Pdf

Excerpt from The Early History of the Airplane Our tables made the designing of the wings an easy matter, and as screw propellers are simply wings traveling in a spiral course, we anticipated no trouble from this source. We had thought oft getting the theory of the screw-propeller from the marine engineers, and then. By applying our tables Of air-pressures to their formulas, Of designing air-propel lers suitable for our purpose. But so far as we could learn, the marine engineers possessed only empirical formulas, and the exact action Of the screw-propeller. Aeronautics by Edwin Bidwell Wilson Pdf

Excerpt from Aeronautics: A Class d104 For several years I have been giving, at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, courses of lectures on those portions of dynamics, both rigid and fluid, which are fundamental in aeronautical engineering. The more elementary parts of these courses, covering about ninety out of one hundred fifty lectures, are found in this book. Although it has been customary to teach the two subjects of rigid and of fluid dynamics in parallel or in rapid alternation, so that they are both developed as needed for each other and for the accompanying courses on airplane and airship design, it has seemed better in making a presentation in book form to separate them. The student should have completed Chaps. IX-XII of the fluid mechanics before undertaking the latter part of Chap. VI. A number of topics which might well be included in a work on aeronautics have been omitted from the book, as they are from my lectures, because they can be taken up so much better in the parallel courses on design. In the preparation of the selected material I have had constantly in mind my own experience and needs relative to effective classroom instruction, particularly in the matter of lists of exercises. Although my students are supposed to have completed thorough courses in calculus, including the elements of differential equations, and in theoretical and applied mechanics, it has seemed better to assume too little, rather than too much, as retained in usable form. I hope, therefore, that with the present interest in aeronautics in particular, and in applied mathematics in general, this work may prove stimulating to other than technical students of aeronautical engineering. Nobody can issue a book on aeronautics at this time without lamenting the fact that much, if not most, of the progress in theory which has been made during the war, particularly in England, has not yet been released for publication. To wait, however, until its release and subsequent digestion would mean a long delay. Indeed from one viewpoint no time is more appropriate for the printing of these elementary, introductory, and orienting lectures than just now when there impends a deluge of material for advanced study. Aviation in Peace and War (Classic Reprint) by Frederick Hugh Sykes Pdf

Excerpt from Aviation in Peace and War Our nation as a whole has been educated, owing to its geographical situation and by tra dition, to interest itself in the broader aspects of marine policy and development. It 'requires to take the same interest in aviation, a comparatively new subject, unhampered to a great extent by preconceived notions and therefore offering greater scope for individual thought. The following 1sketch 1 has been written in the hope that some of those who read it may be inspired to study aviation in one or other of its branches, whether from the historical, technical, strategical, or commercial point of view. Any opinions e pressed are, of course, my own-and not official. I propose first briefly to trace the history of aviation from its beginnings to the outbreak of war; next to describe the evolution of aircraft and of air strategy during the war; and last to estimate the present position and to look into the future. Sky High by Eric Hodgins Pdf

Excerpt from Sky High: The Story of Aviation Our indebtednesses are few but deep. To Mr. Edward Weeks of the Atlantic Monthly Press and Mr. Theodore Morrison of the Atlantic Monthly we owe the original idea from which this book stemmed. Professor William N. Seaver, Librarian, and Mrs. Katherine Maynard, Vail Librarian, of Massachu setts Institute of Technology, graciously threw open the Treasure Room of the Library, which yielded information on the obscure early days of aviation and aerostation. We cannot be sufficiently grateful to Mr. Edward P. Warner, the first holder of the portfolio of Assistant Secretary Of the Navy for Aeronautics, and now Editor of Aviation, who read the proofs with painstaking care. TO Mr. Carl H. Claudy of Washington, D. C., we owe a debt as great for the thorough ness with which be examined the proof for every type of error which an author can make. And without the supersecretarial services of Mrs. Harriet Rodgers this book could not have been written at all. Heroes of Aviation (Classic Reprint) by Laurence La Tourette Driggs Pdf

Excerpt from Heroes of Aviation The author is deeply indebted to M. Jacques Mortane and La Guerre Aerienne of Paris for portions of the material used herein relating to the French Air Fighters. M. Mortane, himself an airman and the devoted friend of all fliers, has done more for the cause of Aviation in France than any other living man. His researches in war-aviation will for the years to come form a most valuable history of the birth and growth of the Fourth Arm in Warfare. I desire to here express my further obligations to the London periodicals, Flight, Flying, Aeroplane and Aeronautics, for many of the incidents relating to the British pilots. The inborn reluctance of the British youth to speak of his own heroic deeds prevents the world from estimating the marvelous part he has played in sweeping Germany from the skies. The Hun pilots flood the world with the information of their victories. It was not until I visited England as the guest of the British Government in the fall of 1918 that I discovered that twenty British airmen have exceeded by over one hundred the number of victories claimed by the best twenty Aces of the Huns. And the great majority of these British airmen are still silently carrying on, while but five of the twenty Huns survive! Balloons, Airships and Flying Machines (Classic Reprint) by Gertrude Bacon Pdf

Excerpt from Balloons, Airships and Flying Machines That night of 1782, therefore, marks the first great step ever made towards the conquest of the sky. But to better understand the history of Aeronautics - a word that means the sailing of the air - We must go back far be yond the days of the Montgolfier brothers. For in all times and in all ages men have wanted to fly. David wished for the wings of a dove to fly away and be at rest, and since his time, and before it, how many have not longed to take flight and sail away in the boundless, glorious realms above, to explore the fleecy clouds, and to float free in the blue vault Of heaven.
