Pictures of Ascent in the Fiction of Edgar Allan Poe by D. Anderson Pdf

Withan unconventional new perspective, Andersonidentifies Edgar Allan Poe's texts as ajourney and explores the ways Poe both encounters and transcends the realm of the material. Beginning with Poe s earliest short stories through his last fragment of imaginative prose, this book shows the path that Poe traveled as he came to understand how to transform "rudimentary" into "ultimate" life. Anderson skillfully argues that Poe s response to the existential predicament of life lies at the heart of his achievement.

Pound, Frost, Moore, and Poetic Precision by Barry Ahearn Pdf

Pound, Frost, Moore and Poetic Precision: Science in American Modernist Poetry examines three major poets in light of the demand that poetry aspire to scientific precision. The critical insistence that poetry be precise affected every one of these poets, and looking at how they responded to this insistence offers a new perspective on their achievements and, by extension, twentieth-century poetry in general. Ezra Pound sought to associate poetry with the precision of modern science, technology and mathematics as a way to eliminate or reduce error. Robert Frost, however, welcomed imprecision as a fundamental aspect of existence that the poet could use. Marianne Moore appreciated the value of both precision and imprecision, especially with respect to her religious perspective on human and natural phenomena. By analyzing these particular poets’ reaction to the value placed on precision, Barry Ahearn explores how that emphasis influenced the broader culture, literary culture and twentieth-century Modernist American poetry.

Where Light in Darkness Lies by Veronica della Dora Pdf

An illuminating history of both real-life lighthouses and the beacons of literature and art alike, shedding light on the multifaceted power of these liminal structures. Suspended between sea and sky, battered by the waves and the wind, lighthouses mark the battle lines between the elements. They guard the boundaries between the solid human world and the primordial chaos of the waters; between stability and instability; between the known and the unknown. As such, they have a strange, universal appeal that few other manmade structures possess. Engineered to draw the gaze of sailors, lighthouses have likewise long attracted the attention of soldiers and saints, artists and poets, novelists and filmmakers, colonizers and migrants, and, today more than ever, heritage tourists and developers. Their evocative locations, isolation, and resilience, have turned these structures into complex metaphors, magnets for stories. This book explores the rich story of the lighthouse in the human imagination.

The Lighthouse at the End of the World by Stephen Marlowe Pdf

"Here is an extraordinary tour de force of narrative suspense, historical realism, and surreal enchantment, a novel that rivals its hero's greatest tales as, with phantasmagorical power, it spins its story on two separate but inexorably converging levels. On the one, we are in a superbly evoked nineteenth-century America, as Edgar Allan Poe tells of his nightmare youth, of his obsession with the thirteen-year-old first cousin whom he makes his child bride, of his public triumphs and his private demons. On the other, we are with a phantom Poe living and loving in a Paris viewed through the tinted glasses of his fictional detective, the immortal C. Auguste Dupin. Indeed, Dupin comes very much alive in these pages as he tracks Poe to America, bringing with him the icy logic bestowed upon him by his creator. Even as Poe lays bare the intimate details of his life, Dupin pitilessly exposes secrets of the psyche that are the keys to the ultimate mystery of self - and self-damnation. This is a detective story, a tale of horror, of adventure, of the sea, of fantasy, metaphysics, disintegrating personality, blighted love... all the threads of Poe's unique body of work woven together to meet his last and greatest challenge, the reinvention of himself."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. The Palgrave Handbook of Steam Age Gothic by Clive Bloom Pdf

By the early 1830s the old school of Gothic literature was exhausted. Late Romanticism, emphasising as it did the uncertainties of personality and imagination, gave it a new lease of life. Gothic—the literature of disturbance and uncertainty—now produced works that reflected domestic fears, sexual crimes, drug filled hallucinations, the terrible secrets of middle class marriage, imperial horror at alien invasion, occult demonism and the insanity of psychopaths. It was from the 1830s onwards that the old gothic castle gave way to the country house drawing room, the dungeon was displaced by the sewers of the city and the villains of early novels became the familiar figures of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Dracula, Dorian Grey and Jack the Ripper. After the death of Prince Albert (1861), the Gothic became darker, more morbid, obsessed with demonic lovers, blood sucking ghouls, blood stained murderers and deranged doctors. Whilst the gothic architecture of the Houses of Parliament and the new Puginesque churches upheld a Victorian ideal of sobriety, Christianity and imperial destiny, Gothic literature filed these new spaces with a dread that spread like a plague to America, France, Germany and even Russia. From 1830 to 1914, the period covered by this volume, we saw the emergence of the greats of Gothic literature and the supernatural from Edgar Allan Poe to Emily Bronte, from Sheridan Le Fanu to Bram Stoker and Robert Louis Stevenson. Contributors also examine the fin-de-siècle dreamers of decadence such as Arthur Machen, M P Shiel and Vernon Lee and their obsession with the occult, folklore, spiritualism, revenants, ghostly apparitions and cosmic annihilation. This volume explores the period through the prism of architectural history, urban studies, feminism, 'hauntology' and much more. 'Horror', as Poe teaches us, 'is the soul of the plot'.

Put on your high-heel sneakers (or your carpet slippers) and join a tour of the Black Rooms with their shuttered windows, of the Green Rooms and the adjoining stages. Meet the man on the stage, flanked by Hamlet and Heisenberg, uncertain of what was and what will be, but quite assured that he cannot keep time: Peter Hammill. The critical toolbox and the associative palette are used in roughly equal measures, leaving scholarly glyphs as well as poetic graffiti down Hammill's passage of time. The shouting, however, is up to you!

Living Shadows by John Shirley Pdf

One of the darkest, edgiest, boldest writers around, John Shirley lays down an adrenalized yet artful prose that fairly skids across the page, dragging the reader along into shadowed corners of terror and desire. Yet while it's thrilling, there's psychological depth, too, as Shirley bores into the brains of his characters, revealing the motivations of those who walk on the wild side. Many writers extrapolate from peripheral observation and research, but John Shirley's stories come from personal experience with extreme people and extreme mental states, and his struggle with the seductions of addiction. On the streets, in the midst of darkest suburbia, or just beyond consensus reality - Shirley brings the shadows to vivid life.

At the heart of the famed "Shipwreck Coast," Au Sable Point was a beacon of hope and safety. Mikel B. Classen charts the history of the lighthouse and the dangerous reef that waits six feet under the lake's surface and serves as the final resting place for so many sailors.

A Place That I Love by Walter Kitter Pdf

Mackinac Island is located in Lake Huron. It is one of three crown jewels that are within the borders of Michigan. Upon arrival, you will notice a lot of bicycles, horse-drawn carriages—some for hauling freight, others for shuttling people to and from their hotel—the maroon Grand Hotel bus, taxis, and public tour carriages. People are walking on the streets and sidewalks as well. If you arrive in late May or early June, you will have a chance of catching the lilacs in bloom. There are five authorized motorized vehicles allowed on the island. They are police cars, fire trucks, ambulances, an assortment of maintenance vehicles for the electric company, and snowmobiles, which is the main mode of transportation for the approximately 450 to 500 permanent residents. One of the best and easiest ways to get around is by bicycle. Most people who visit the island think that Main Street and downtown is it. There is more to the island than the eighteen or so fudge shops and tourist stores. It is part of the experience, but not the whole experience.
