Adverse Events Associated with Childhood Vaccines by Institute of Medicine,Vaccine Safety Committee Pdf

Childhood immunization is one of the major public health measures of the 20th century and is now receiving special attention from the Clinton administration. At the same time, some parents and health professionals are questioning the safety of vaccines because of the occurrence of rare adverse events after immunization. This volume provides the most thorough literature review available about links between common childhood vaccinesâ€"tetanus, diphtheria, measles, mumps, polio, Haemophilus influenzae b, and hepatitis Bâ€"and specific types of disorders or death. The authors discuss approaches to evidence and causality and examine the consequencesâ€"neurologic and immunologic disorders and deathâ€"linked with immunization. Discussion also includes background information on the development of the vaccines and details about the case reports, clinical trials, and other evidence associating each vaccine with specific disorders. This comprehensive volume will be an important resource to anyone concerned about the immunization controversy: public health officials, pediatricians, attorneys, researchers, and parents.

Polio by Thomas Abraham Pdf

In 1988, the World Health Organization launched a twelve-year campaign to wipe out polio. Thirty years and several billion dollars over budget later, the campaign grinds on, vaccinating millions of children and hoping that each new year might see an end to the disease. But success remains elusive, against a surprisingly resilient virus, an unexpectedly weak vaccine and the vagaries of global politics, meeting with indifference from governments and populations alike. How did an innocuous campaign to rid the world of a crippling disease become a hostage of geopolitics? Why do parents refuse to vaccinate their children against polio? And why have poorly paid door-to-door healthworkers been assassinated? Thomas Abraham reports on the ground in search of answers.

Rehabilitation Surgery for Deformities Due to Poliomyelitis by World Health Organization Pdf

An illustrated guide to surgical procedures that can facilitate rehabilitation of selected patients with deformities due to poliomyelitis. Addressed to doctors providing surgical services in district hospitals the book concentrates on simple procedures that can significantly facilitate rehabilitation and improve the physical independence of polio victims. The importance of including physical therapy in the management of patients is repeatedly emphasized. The manual can be used for training purposes or as an aide mTmoire. The book covers both simple essential procedures that can be carried out by a general duty doctor with some experience in an average district hospital and those more difficult procedures that require more experience and better than average facilities. Most of the procedures covered are corrective and stabilizing procedures on the lower limbs which aim to enable patients to stand and move. The book features nine chapters presented in two parts. Chapters in the first part describe the disease and its sequelae provide detailed advice on the tests to be used when evaluating patients and selecting the appropriate procedures and explain a number of basic surgical techniques. Chapters in the second and most extensive part describe specific surgical procedures for the hip knee foot and ankle and elbow. Although some procedures involving bone are described the handbook stresses that these techniques require more training and experience.

Poliomyelitis: Newark 1916 by Sandra W. Moss, MA;MD Pdf

POLIOMYELITIS: NEWARK 1916 THE GRIP OF FEAR is a study of the devastating "scourge" that struck the city of Newark a century ago. Most victims were infants and toddlers for whom there were no effective treatments, no vaccines, and no iron lungs. Per capita, Newark was the hardest hit of any American city, with 1,360 cases and 363 deaths. The book draws heavily on newspaper accounts, public health documents, and the accounts of physicians who faced the epidemic with uncertain knowledge and no effective treatment. Public health officials, as in all epidemics, desperately sought to limit the spread of disease and, in the process, risked creating a medical police state. Hundreds of survivors faced a lifetime of disability, giving poliomyelitis its particular power to terrify.
