Democratic Sovereignty by Matthew S. Weinert Pdf
This new book argues that sovereignty, generally defined as the supreme authority in a political community, has a neglected democratic dimension that highlights the expansion of substantive individual rights and freedoms at home and abroad. Offering an historically based assessment of sovereignty that neither reifies the state nor argues sovereignty and the state are eroding under globalizing processes, the book maintains that sovereignty norms have continually changed throughout the history of the sovereign state. Matthew Weinert links international legal developments that restrict and coordinate sovereignty practices with an ethical undercurrent in International Relations, one such example is the creation of the International Criminal Court in 2002. Drawing on seven additional historical case studies, he outlines how campaigns informed by a commitment to the common good, or at the very least by opposition to harmful state policies, can be and have been efficacious in transforming the normative basis of sovereignty. Democratic Sovereignty will be of great interest to students working in the fields of sovereignty, international history, ethics, globalization and international relations.

State Sovereignty: Rebellion Against the United States by the People of a State; Is Its Political Suicide (Classic Reprint) by James a. Hamilton Pdf
Excerpt from State Sovereignty: Rebellion Against the United States by the People of a State; Is Its Political Suicide It is proposed to discuss these great propositions with candor, and in a manner, it is hoped, which will tend to impress upon the public mind such clear views in relation thereto as that the arts of party politicians and demagogues may never again, by exciting feelings of State pride, sap the foundation of the people's loyalty to their Government of the United States. In 1798, ambitious men, to promote a party triumph, induced numbers, and ultimately a majority of the people, to believe that the State Governments were in danger of destruction from the encroachments of the central Government. Then, and thus, was created "The States' Rights Party." This skillful effort of party strategy produced the famous resolutions of 1798, passed by the Legislatures of Virginia and Kentucky, proclaiming dogmas in relation to the powers of the States which, without a very forced construction, laid the foundation of Nullification by South Carolina in 1832, and culminated in the "Slave Barons'" Rebellion in 1860. This is the teaching of history. It is referred to now only as a warning voice, and to prepare politicians and partisans, as well as the people, not to receive the dogma of "State Sovereignty" as embracing a truth worthy of all acceptance, and of so sacred a character as to forbid questioning or examination. Leviathan by Thomas Hobbes Pdf
Leviathan or The Matter, Forme and Power of a Common-Wealth Ecclesiastical and Civil is a book written by an English materialist philosopher Thomas Hobbes about problems of the state existence and development. Leviathan is a name of a Bible monster, a symbol of nature powers that belittles a man. Hobbes uses this character to describe a powerful state (“God of the death”). He starts with a postulate about a natural human state (“the war of all against all”) and develops the idea “man is a wolf to a man”. When people stay for a long time in the position of an inevitable extermination they give a part of their natural rights, for the sake of their lives and general peace, according to an unspoken agreement to someone who is obliged to maintain a free usage of the rest of their rights – to the state. The state, a union of people, where the will of a single one (the state) is compulsory for everybody, has a task to regulate the relations between all the people. The book was banned several times in England and Russia.

Authority in the Modern State (Works of Harold J. Laski) by Harold J. Laski Pdf
As a sequel to Studies in the Problem of Sovereignty, this volume, originally published in 1919, expands Laski’s pluralist doctrine of the state, (using France as its reference) but covers rather broader ground, since its main object is to insist that the problem of sovereignty is only a special case of the problem of authority. The result is a positive, constructive analysis of politics and the theory of the state which examines the division and organisation of power, the limitations of power and the significance of freedom, the political theory of Bonald, the revival of traditionalism and the role of the Church and the Civil Service.
