POPULAR TALES FROM THE NORSE - 59 Scandinavian Folk Tales by Anon E. Mouse Pdf

This is a volume of 59 Scandinavian folk tales originally collected over time by Asbjörnsen and Moe and translated into English by Sir George Webbe-Dasent. This is not a volume of Norse mythology per se; so if you are looking for tales of Odin, Thor, Loki, etc., we would refer you to a volume entitled The Children of Odin. Rather, this volume is more fairy and far less Viking in nature. This is an anthology of 59 Norse-themed folk and fairy tales, similar to those collected by the Grimm Brothers, or those found in Andrew Lang’s Many Coloured Fairy Books. In the 59 tales in this volume, all of the usual suspects are in place, including princes, princesses, fools, peasants who achieve seemingly impossible tasks, giants, trolls, elves, witches, evil step-siblings, magical boons, and anthropomorphic animals and beings, all making for a magical volume of Northern Folk and Fairy Tales. The introduction is exceptionally well written, and places various magical and other themes from the tales into the context of the ancient Norse Pagan beliefs. Once past the introduction, the prose directly addresses young people and young adults, and the delightful stories can be appreciated by readers of all ages. But be warned, despite these tales being magical in character, these are tales from an era when political correctness did not exist. In the words of the translator, “the person who, in such a work, wilfully changes or softens the meaning, is as guilty as they "who put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter." So join with us and venture back in time to an age when the world still had a connection to the ethereal. A time when magic was still believed to exist and a time when Trolls, Elves, Nidhogg, Vargr and other magical beings still roamed the earth. Popular Tales of the Norse by Anonim Pdf

This is George Dasent's classic collection of Scandinavian folklore. This is not about Norse mythology per se; so if you are looking for tales of Odin, Loki, and Freya etc., we would refer you to a volume entitled Tiivistelma. Rather, this is a volume that is more fairy and less Viking, or Saga, in nature. This is an anthology of folk tales, similar to the Grimm Brothers, or Campbell's Popular Tales of the West Highlands (also published by Abela Publishing). All of the usual suspects are in place, including giants, trolls, witches, evil step-siblings, magical boons and tasks, and anthropomorphic animals and beings. The introduction is exceptionally well written, and places various magical and other themes from the tales into the context of ancient Norse Pagan beliefs. It is a Victorian scholarly treatise however (with the requisite multipage footnotes and rhetorical flourishes), which will no doubt be appreciated by readers with an academic persuasion. Once past the introduction however, the prose descends to the young adult level, and the delightful stories can be appreciated by readers of all ages. But be warned, despite these tales being magical in character, these are tales from an era when political correctness did not exist. In the words of the translator, "the person who, in such a work, wilfully changes or softens, is as guilty as they "who put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter." So join with us again and venture back in time to an age when the world still had a connection to the ethereal. A time when magic was still believed to exist. 33% of the net profit from the sale of this book will be donated to charities for educational purposes.

So he put the quern on the table, and bade it first of all grind lights, then a table-cloth, then meat, then ale, and so on till they had got everything that was nice for Christmas fare. He had only to speak the word, and the quern ground out what he wanted. The old dame stood by blessing her stars, and kept on asking where he had got this wonderful quern, but he wouldn't tell her.

Viking Tales by Jennie Hall Pdf

This spectacular collection of ancient Viking myths and legends was compiled by Jennie Hall - a leading enthusiast in Nordic mythology. The tales draw upon well-known legends involving the Nordic pantheon of the Gods, as well as the folk stories which follow a young hero named Harald. The two countries focused upon are Norway and Iceland, with the seafaring culture for which the Nordic peoples were renowned in the early Middle Ages receiving much prominence. Rich with swashbuckling heroism, the stories within this volume are recounted compellingly, starting with an account of King Harald's infancy. The stories are imbued by Hall's deep research into the Nordic culture - the hierarchy of their society, the means by which they set laws and settled disputes, how they married and partook in family life, and how they fought and died in war. Together with this book's thrilling stories, Jennie Hall imbues her own researches into the language pronunciations and cultural traits of the Nordic peoples.

Popular Tales from the Norse by Sir George Webbe Dasent Pdf

Peter Christen Asbjørnsen and Jørgen Moe, friends since childhood, collaboratively published a series of Norwegian legends and folktales. In order to overcome language and dialect difficulties, the two modeled their style after the Brothers Grimm. The stories were originally published in pamphlets, but by 1870 the current collection was published, and the entire work was translated by Sir George Webbe Dasent, a professor of English literature and modern history at Kings College London. Asbjørnsen and Moe called his work "the best and happiest rendering of our tales that has appeared." These simple yet charming stories are a treat for both children and adults, full of giants, trolls, heroes and princesses. The stories include: "East O' The Sun and West O' The Moon," "Taming the Shrew," "The Master Thief," "The Widow's Son," "The Three Billy-goats Gruff" and many others.
