World Population Policies by John F. May Pdf

This book examines the history behind the formulation, implementation, and evaluation of population policies in the more developed, the less developed, and the least developed countries from 1950 until today, as well as their future prospects. It links population policies with the theories of the demographic, epidemiological, and migratory transitions. It begins by summarizing the demographic situation around the world, with an emphasis on population policies and their underlying theories. Then, it reviews the early efforts to reduce mortality and fertility in the developing countries. This is followed by a description of the internationalization of the debate on population issues and the transformation of these programs into more formal population policies, particularly in the developing countries. The book reviews also the situation of the developed countries and their specific challenges – sub-replacement fertility, population aging, and immigration – and examines the effectiveness of population policies. It also explores the way forward and future prospects for population policies over the next decades. The book provides numerous concrete examples from all over the world, and show how population policies are actually implemented and what have been their successes as well as their constraints. Above all, the book highlights the importance of understanding underlying demographic trends when assessing the development prospects of any country. The book is recommended for not only demographers, social scientists, and policymakers but also economists and political scientists who are interested in social and demographic change around the world. Demography students and researchers who are interested in applying knowledge on population trends and prospects in designing and evaluating public policies will find this an invaluable reference work.

From Provinces into Nations by Susan Cotts Watkins Pdf

Between 1870 and 1960, national boundaries became more evident on the demographic map of Western Europe. In most of the fifteen countries examined here, differences in marital fertility, illegitimacy, and marriage from one province (counties, cantons, arrondissements) to another diminished considerably. From Provinces into Nations describes this shift to greater national demographic homogeneity and places it in the context of a parallel decline in linguistic diversity, as well as in the context of increases in national market integration, the expansion of state activities, and nation-building. The book interprets the shift as evidence of the influence of communities on demographic behavior, and as an indication of the growing predominance of national over local communities. The author uses demographic data, too often the property of specialists, to examine themes of interest to historians, sociologists, economists, and political scientists interested in the integration of modern societies. The Decline of Fertility in Europe by Ansley Johnson Coale Pdf

This volume summarizes the major findings of the Princeton European Fertility Project. The Project, begun in 1963, was a response to the realization that one of the great social revolutions of the last century, the remarkable decline in marital fertility in Europe, was still poorly understood. Planning for Population Change by W. T. S. Gould,Richard Lawton Pdf

This collection of essays is concerned with the consequences of population change for present and future social and economic policy towards such questions as employment, education, and health care, as well as the spatial and temporal variations in demand that arise from both demographic and geographical differences. The book argues that there is a need for greater sensitivity about population change in policy-making and service provision and suggests ways of achieving this goal. It shows how population problems are only one part of a complex of factors associated with development; that population policies cannot be focused solely on demographic factors; and effective family planning must persuade individuals through education in the advantages and means of control.

The Importance of Emigration for the Solution of Population Problems in Western Europe by Hilde Wander Pdf

This first publication of the Research Group for European Migration Problems is devoted to the importance of migration in Western Europe. Small wonder that espedally German sodal sdentists, living in a country invaded by millions and millions of refugees and expellees from Central and Eastern Europe, are paying so much attention to the solution of regional andnationaloverpopulation. It is doubtful whether we can speak of European overpopulation in general. Dr Hilde Wander's investigations make it dear that from a European point of view short distance migration may solve many problems for which up to now overseas emigration to Canada, Australia, etc. seemed to be the only remedy. Those talking about European integration (there still is much than real action) should keep in more discussion on this topic mind that the only way out of the present system of frustrations consists in economic and sodal freedom, i.e. a free flow of goods, capital and migrating people. The Research Group for European Migration Problems is an international committee promoting the study of one of the crudal sodal problems, rather neglected so far: a more effective distribution and spreading of the European population.
