The thesis of this study is that the forms of population migration change systematically over periods of time and from area to area. Using data from several parts of the world, the author shows how population mobility is linked to wider social, economic and political change, and that it is closely related to such processes as the rise of nationalism. He draws comparisons between the historical experience of Europe and patterns in today's developing world. The book is divided into three parts. Part I examines the problem of the measurement of population movements and reviews studies of mobility based mainly on the historical record. This part is concerned with the patterns of mobility in pre-industrial and early industrializing societies as a basis of comparison with more recent patterns. The specific focus is on mobility and the peasantry in order to examine critically the notion that peasants either are or were mobile. Part II contains detailed descriptions of migration in a number of countries, particularly Peru and Papua New Guinea. The author looks back on earlier work and attempts to review earlier conclusions in the light of recent research and data. Part III deals with certain changes that occur in the way they do. The central theme is the penetration of a European-dominated system and the two-way relationships between the factors giving rise to particular patterns of mobility and the effect that these patterns of mobility have on society and the economy. A separate chapter examines the ability of governments or other institutions to guide the changes in particular directions through migration policy.

The great migration of farmers leaving rural China to work and live in big cities as 'floaters' has been an on-going debate in China for the past three decades. This book probes into the spatial mobility of migrant workers in Beijing, and questions the city 'rights' issues beneath the city-making movement in contemporary China. In revealing and explaining the socio-spatial injustice, this volume re-theorizes the 'right to the city' in the Chinese context since Deng Xiaoping's reforms. The policy review, census analysis, and housing survey are conducted to examine the fate of migrant workers, who being the most marginalized group have to move persistently as the city expands and modernizes itself. The study also compares the migrant workers with local Pekinese dislocated by inner city renewals and city expansion activities. Rapid urban growth and land expropriation of peripheral farmlands have also created a by-product of urbanization, an informal property development by local farmers in response to rising low-cost rental housing demand. This is a highly comparable phenomenon with cities in other newly industrialized countries, such as São Paulo. Much of the literature on globalization has centered on the large, macro-level forces that influence the ways ideas, people, and various forms of capital move around the world. From this vantage point, discussions about the progressive feminization of migration, in particular the feminization of out-migration from rural areas, indicate an intriguing trend. Simultaneously, the local experience of global forces is an important way of exploring how macro-level processes are navigated by social actors on the ground. This provides added texture to our understanding of why and how people make decisions about their lives within an increasingly interconnected social, economic, and political environment. This volume explores whether concurrent patterns in identity development, social relations, and youth behaviors on the micro-level might help explain similarities observable at the macro-level. Through a triangulated approach that balances between statistical backdrops, extant quantitative research, and in-depth qualitative interviews, this book theorizes about shifts in gender normativity, efforts towards social mobility, and the possible effects of an increasingly globalized society.
