Porsche - The Racing 914s by Roy Smith Pdf

Detailed study of a remarkable little car that, when it appeared in 1969, was considered a mish-mash of ideas, and not a ‘proper’ Porsche. It’s also the story of the ‘little’ guys … the privateers and dealer teams who did most of the development that turned the 914 into great little racer.

Powered by Porsche - the alternative race cars by Roy P Smith Pdf

Powered by Porsche – the Alternative Race Cars is a thorough and fascinating account of the racing cars that were powered by Porsche engines, but where the chassis and development of the car was carried out by others. The Porsche company in Zuffenhausen, Germany, can probably be said to be the most successful marque ever for victories in the motor racing scene. Likewise many firsts in innovation have come with the name Porsche attached. Many major racing car producers such as Elva, Lotus, Lola, or March, as well as many smaller independents, at some time featured a Porsche engine in their chassis. Demand for the services and supply of cars, chassis, and parts from Porsche, often outstripped their ability to deliver during the late ’70s to early ’80s. With many new projects in the rapidly expanding Porsche organisation, race car projects had to be prioritised. This would lead to the creation of the replicas, as opposed to the factory-built works race cars, and even Porsche was building ‘replica’ 935s to supply to clients, continuing into the 962 era. In turn, a whole new, highly specialised, high quality industry grew up to meet the demand for Porsche-powered racers. In this fascinating book we meet the racing cars, the teams and the people who turned to Porsche to utilise the power from, perhaps, the greatest of all engine makers. This is thought to be first book on the subject, covering the entire history of Porsche engines, detailed engine specifications, non-Porsche chassis, and race details, as well as team histories with anecdotes from drivers. It is illustrated with many previously unpublished photos, and provides fascinating reading for all racing fans, as well as Porsche enthusiasts.

Porsche 914 & 914-6 by Roy Smith Pdf

Launched in 1969, the 914 series went through many problems and changes before production came to an end in 1976. It was constantly improved during its short life, but time just ran out for the model. It is interesting to note that until the Boxster made its debut, it remained Porsche's only mid-engined production car, although the company's racing models had been built with this layout for some years. The 914 also had a fine competition history - something that is often overlooked or run down because it wasn't as brilliant as that of the 911. By normal standards, however, it was indeed a fine history. There were also a large number of specials built on the 914 chassis, and both of these aspects have been covered in detail. The 914 series has often been cited as the forgotten Porsche, but there is a growing band of enthusiasts who only have eyes for this model. The handling is of course a major factor contributing towards the enjoyment of the type, but many people like the styling, and the fact that for so many years this was the most affordable of all Porsches to own and run. Now times have changed and the model has appreciated, not only in value, but in terms of awareness as well. The 914-6 has become particularly desirable, and it is hoped that this book will go some way towards explaining the 914's various merits.

* Special slipcased edition, limited to 314 copies The Porsche 911's little brother...In 1969 a very special sports car was born. The 914 rose from a marriage of convenience of Volkswagen and Porsche, because both companies wanted a small, modern and affordable sports car in their product range, but for little cost. Thus it was decided to combine the skills of both manufacturers. The result was a light mid-engine sports car with a lively road performance and even 50 years after its launch, it pleases the eye with a fresh design. Back then it was often ridiculed as a 'housewife Porsche' or 'Volks-Porsche', but now, the 914 has come out of the shadow of its big brother the 911 and has a huge fan base; today it lives on in the Boxster and Cayman models. This volume includes: the result of thorough research in the Porsche and VW archives; rich photography; all technical data; development, production, model history and racing appearances.

Porsche Racing Cars by Bill Oursler Pdf

For half a century, Porsche automobiles have been favorites of race fans and drivers in endurance events, rallies, hill climbs, Trans Am, Can-Am, and GT racing. This photohistory chronicles more than 100 racing Porsches that have been campaigned at circuits the world over, including Le Mans, Daytona, Sebring, Spa, Nurburgring, and Leguna Seca, to name a few. In addition to color photography of the cars today and archival race images depicting the cars and top drivers from the annals of motorsport, the author presents the histories of such legendary Porsches as the 550 Spyder, a customer version of which gained notoriety as the car in which James Dean died; the open-wheel 718/2 with which Porsche unsuccessfully contested Formula 1 in 1959 and 1960; the 904 GTS that dominated European circuits in 1964 and 1965; the 917's which in 1972 and 1973 halted McLaren's Can-Am cakewalk; the 1976 Martini-liveried 935; the pair of Rothman-sponsored 959's that easily swept Paris-Dakar in 1986; and today's successful 911 GT cars.

Porsche - Silver Steeds by Roy Smith Pdf

The book is a lavishly illustrated monograph by prize-winning author Roy Smith, covering the most fascinating period of Porsche’s racing history. It spans 460 pages and includes over 660 images, many of which are rare and previously unpublished from the Porsche archives. Many top drivers started their careers in the little silver cars that came out of the Porsche workshops in Zuffenhausen, where ingenuity, creativity, and above all excellence was always the target. This was a workshop where exceptional engineers and technicians designed and built world beaters – ‘Silver Steeds’.This book pays homage to the Porsche racing cars of the early years that set the standard of what was to follow, establishing a racing department reputation that was to become the envy of the sports car world. It brings together the ‘Spyder’ 550s, 718s and the first 904s in one work, including a foray into Formula 2 and Formula 1.This is a tribute to the engineering gems that were the starting point for over 70 years of Porsche racing – a record of the life and times of the men and machines during an evocative period of motoring history.
