The Selected Papers of Jane Addams by Mary Lynn Bryan,Barbara Bair,Maree de Angury,Jane Addams Pdf

Filling a void in Jane Addams scholarship, this first volume of The Selected Papers of Jane Addams collects extant documents from the formative years of the major American historical figure, intellectual, social activist, and author. Documenting the early development of Addams's social principles, the documents reveal the leadership skills that led her into a life of public commitment. For all her public compassion and visibility as an outspoken pacifist, Progressive reformer, and founder of Hull-House, Addams was an intensely private person who revealed her personal side only to family and close friends. Drawing on letters, diaries, and other writings from her childhood in Cedarville, Illinois, and her education at the Rockford Female Seminary, this volume provides heretofore unavailable insight into her developing ideas, educational experiences, and personal relationships. More than just biographical records, The Selected Papers of Jane Addams defines the era in which Addams lived. Unique yet representative of the spiritual ideals and political sensibilities of post-Civil War women and society, Addams's lesser-known, personal writings are necessary reading for scholars and historians. The volume explores important themes, including the migration of families westward, the first generation of college women, and the religious and domestic lives of nineteenth-century Americans. The editors' rich annotation of individuals and events featured in the documents and appendix of biographical profiles represent a trove of primary research and place the documents in historical context.

A Politician Turned General by Jeffrey Norman Lash Pdf

A Politician Turned General offers a critical examination of the turbulent early political career and the controversial military service of Stephen Augustus Hurlbut, an Illinois Whig. Republican politician, and Northern political general who rose to distinction as a prominent member of the Union high command in the West during the Civil War. Though traditionally there are two different characterizations of those who exercised command during the Civil War - soldier-politician and the political generals - Hurlbut was viewed as a military politician. This book provides an important study of another friend and/or political supporter of Lincoln who rose to general during the war and gained important appointments after the war. This first biography of Hurlbut chronicles the early life and the Civil War career of one of Abraham Lincoln's foremost military appointments. Through exhaustive research of primary and secondary sources, author Jeffrey N. Lash identifies and evaluates the successes and failures of Hurlbut's generalship and combat leadership, both as a field commander in Missouri in 1861 and as a division commander at the Battles of Shiloh and Hatchie Bridge in 1862. Emerson Manufacturing Co. A Family Connection by Harold A Ralston Pdf

This book contains some historical information about the reaper industry in Rockford, Illinois during the second half of the nineteenth century. It contains some biographical information about the innovators and industrialists involved. Several pictures of their patents, 1851-1869, are included. This is the result of some family history research I was doing when I discovered that my grandfather, Louis Andrew Belden, had been employed in Rockford, Illinois at the firm of Emerson Manufacturing Co. in 1905. In 1903-1905, his father in law, Great-Grandpa William J Goff, was also employed there. This firm later became Emerson-Brantingham Co and was purchased in 1928 by J I Case Co. I was employed in Rockford at the product engineering office of the J I Case factory beginning in 1952 and continued at that location until it was closed down in 1970. I remained in the Case Co employment at Bettendorf, IA until 1975 and then in Racine, WI until my retirement in 1989.
