Tolerance Re-Shaped in the Early-Modern Mediterranean Borderlands by Filomena Viviana Tagliaferri Pdf

This book explores perceptions of toleration and self-identity through an analysis of otherness’ real experience of Italian travellers, Catholic missionaries and Maltese proto-journalists within Mediterranean border-spaces. Employing a multidisciplinary approach, which integrates the analysis of original and unpublished archival documentation with early modern European travel literature, the book shows how fluid subjects and border groups adapted to new environments, often generating information that made the Ottomans and their system of values real and dignified to an Italian audience. The interdisciplinary combining of historical methodology with the tools of comparative literature, anthropology and folklore studies provides a fresh perspective on concepts of tolerance as experienced in the early modern Mediterranean.

Statehood in the Altaic World by Oliver Corff Pdf

Altaic Studies deal with a group of languages (and respective cultures) that show obvious similarities: Turkic, Mongol and Manchu-Tungus. Whether they are really related or whether they just influenced each other remains a matter of scholarly discussion. The Permanent International Altaistic Conference (PIAC) was established in 1957 as a working group to further research on this issue. Annual meetings have since been taking place in different countries, and the respective proceedings offer a wealth of information on the Altaic languages and cultures. The 2016 meeting took place at Ardahan, Turkey, a new and modern university close to the borders of Georgia and Armenia; it covered a wide range of subjects of which a peer-reviewed selection is published in the present volume. The papers deal with an Old Turkic inscription, the Bâbur-nâma (memoirs of Bâbur), Crimean history, Uighur calligraphy, the modern role of the Kazakh language, the ancestor cult in Turkic traditions, administrative and state concepts in the 18th century Chinese imperial pentaglot dictionary (which includes Turki), an appreciation of Denis Sinor (1916-2011), celebrated Altaist and for many years secretary general of the PIAC, the publishing projects of the outstanding Lamaist scholar and politician Lalitavajra (Rol-pa'i rdo-rje) and several poetic travelogues in Mongolia. The editors are members of the PIAC: Barbara Kellner-Heinkele is Prof. emer. of Turkic Studies (Free University of Berlin) and secretary general of the PIAC, Oliver Corff is an independent scholar of Chinese Studies, Hartmut Walravens is retired from his positions at the Berlin State Library and as Director of the worldwide ISBN system.

Empires of the Sea by Roger Crowley Pdf

In 1521, Suleiman the Magnificent, Muslim ruler of the Ottoman Empire, dispatched an invasion fleet to the Christian island of Rhodes. This would prove to be the opening shot in an epic clash between rival empires and faiths for control of the Mediterranean and the center of the world. In Empires of the Sea, acclaimed historian Roger Crowley has written a thrilling account of this brutal decades-long battle between Christendom and Islam for the soul of Europe, a fast-paced tale of spiraling intensity that ranges from Istanbul to the Gates of Gibraltar. Crowley conjures up a wild cast of pirates, crusaders, and religious warriors struggling for supremacy and survival in a tale of slavery and galley warfare, desperate bravery and utter brutality. Empires of the Sea is a story of extraordinary color and incident, and provides a crucial context for our own clash of civilizations.

Silk by Jacques Anquetil,Pascale Ballesteros Pdf

"From start to finish, this book is a visual delight. In 300 remarkably clear and vivid color photographs, the glories of this regal fabric are displayed by examples of its use in fashions and furnishings. The main focus of the book is silk fabrics from periods preceding the 14th century to the present in France, but actual gowns and textiles from France's museums and archives are shown as well. Whereas Phillipa Scott's The Book of Silk (LJ 1/94) gave a general history of silk from its origins in Asia, textiles historian Anquetil concentrates on Europe, especially the silk manufacturing centers of Tours and Lyon. There is so little, if any, duplication between the two books that collections specializing in textiles, fashion, or design really must have both. If more general collections can afford only one volume, then Anquetil's more deluxe Silk is highly recommended." --From Library Journal.

Orientalism Transposed by Julie F. Codell,Dianne Sacko Macleod Pdf

First published in 1998, this volume reflects that, ever since the publication of Edward Said’s Orientalism twenty years ago, scholars have tested his thesis against the wider application of his terms to cultural practices and the rhetoric of power. The cultural impact of the British on their colonies has been extensively investigated but only recently have scholars begun to ask in what ways British culture was transformed by its contact with the colonies. The essays in this volume demonstrate how influential the Empire was on British culture from the late eighteenth to early twentieth centuries. They show how, from cross-cultural cross-dressing to Buddhism, British artists and writers appropriated unfamiliar and challenging aspects of the culture of the Empire for their own purposes. An examination is also made of the extent to which colonized people engaged in the orientalising discourse, amending and subverting it, even re-applying its stereotypes to the British themselves. Finally, two essays explore instances of the exchange of ideas between colonies. Several of the essays are based on papers given at the 1996 Conference of the College Arts Association.

Rulers of the Ottoman Empire by Anonim Pdf

This illustrated volume presents the portraits of the thirty-six rulers of the Ottoman Empire, from Osman I Gazi to Mehmet VI. The tale of their lives and of the major events during their rule follows the development of a small border principality into a powerful empire spreading over three continents, incorporating in its heyday an immense territory and a wide variety of peoples, to pass through its long and painful disintegration and come to its inevitable collapse in the early 20th century. What kind of people were the sultans? What did they look like? How did they act as statesmen and in their private life? What were their merits and vices? How did they become all-powerful lords or mere toys in the hands of their advisors? The unbiased tale of the life of these persons who bore the burden of power is effectively the history of the Ottoman Empire -- pathetic and proud, cruel and genuine, with its ups and downs, entwining the fate of many peoples and nations and leaving an indelible if ambiguous mark in the annals of humankind.
