Possibilities by N. Turner Simkins Pdf

This book maintains a broad range of appeal to individuals and families who have experienced catastrophic struggle, illness or torment on any level, but primarily to readers with an appreciation for stories of spiritual growth and personal reconciliation. It has been posited as a combination of "Man's Search for Meaning" and "Unbroken," which is a testament to both the beautiful writing and dramatic story about the plight of a loving son and brother that is both staggering in scope and mesmerizing in tone. It has received tremendous praise from authors in the faith community (Richard Roar and Wm. Paul Young), non-fiction adventure (Hampton Sides) and the medical community (Dr. William Evans, CEO St. Jude Children's Hospital). Possibilities is testament to the fact that some stories can be both brutal and beautiful; but few stories have ever been more powerful.

Possibilities of Grace by Asbury Lowery Pdf

Possibilities of Grace is a series of alternate scriptural readings by Reverend Asbury Lowery, sourced from early Bible scriptures in Greek, and the ancient Christian church. Lowery, a preacher and scholar of ancient literature, was moved to unite his two specialisms by examining the Bible and prominent figures of early Christianity. Sourcing early versions of the gospels and Old Testament in Greek, he begins by explaining a series of words which occur frequently in the scripture. These Greek terms can receive more than one interpretation; thus, there are new possibilities of grace. Given that Lowery, in conducting his readings of ancient texts, has circumvented many more recent traditions of Christianity, he is emboldened to assert that the word of God is purest in these ancient documents. Any subsequent interpretation, be it from a scholar or a denomination of Christianity, is a barrier between the believer and the truest principles of God divulged in antiquity. The original testaments are described as gold and silver by Lowery, who seeks to provide the reader with a clear reinterpretation cleaving to truth. Additionally, Lowery examines the history of the ancient church, and the figures who were influential in its founding and growth. He notes the impact that figures such as Augustine, Bishop of Hippo and Cyprian, the Bishop of Carthage had on early doctrine. In all, Possibilities of Grace is a convincing and thorough study of Christian principles which goes above and beyond many other texts of its kind. By delving into the earliest iterations of the scriptures, and investigating the events in the early church, Reverend Lowery produced a convincing and informative work of scholarship.

A Thread of Grace by Mary Doria Russell Pdf

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “A powerfully imagined novel . . . [a] profoundly moving book that engages the heights and depths of human experience.”—Los Angeles Times It is September 8, 1943, and fourteen-year-old Claudette Blum and her father are among the thousands of Jewish refugees scrambling over the Alps toward Italy, where they hope to find safety now that the Italians have broken from Germany and made a separate peace with the Allies. The Blums will soon discover that Italy is anything but peaceful, as it quickly becomes an open battleground for the Nazis, the Allies, Resistance fighters, Jews in hiding, and ordinary Italian civilians trying to survive. Tracing the lives of a handful of fascinating characters—a charismatic Italian Resistance leader, a priest, an Italian rabbi’s family, a disillusioned German doctor—Mary Doria Russell tells the little-known story of the vast underground effort by Italian citizens who saved the lives of 43,000 Jews during the final phase of World War II. A Thread of Grace puts a human face on history. Praise for A Thread of Grace “An addictive page-turner . . . [Mary Doria] Russell has an astonishing story to tell—full of action, paced like a rapid-fire thriller, in tense, vivid scenes that move with cinematic verve.”—The Washington Post Book World “Hauntingly beautiful, utterly unforgettable.”—San Francisco Chronicle “Rich . . . Based on the heroism of ordinary people, [A Thread of Grace] packs an emotional punch.”—People “[A] deeply felt and compellingly written book . . . The progress of each character’s life is marked or measured by acts of grace. . . . Russell is a smart, passionate and imaginative writer.”—Cleveland Plain Dealer “A feat of storytelling . . . an important book [that] needs to be widely read.”—Portland Oregonian “Mary Doria Russell’s fans (and aren’t we all?) will rejoice to see her new novel on the shelves. A Thread of Grace is as ambitious, beautiful, tense, and transforming as any of us could have hoped.”—Karen Joy Fowler, author of The Jane Austen Book Club “A story of love and war, A Thread of Grace speaks to the resilience and beauty of the human spirit in the midst of unimaginable horror. It is, unquestionably, a literary triumph.”—David Morrell, author of The Brotherhood of the Rose and First Blood

Finding Grace with God by Rose Ellen Dunn Pdf

Finding Grace with God: A Phenomenological Reading of the Annunciation engages in an interweaving of phenomenology, mystical theology, and feminist philosophy to unfold a theopoetic interpretation of the narrative of the Annunciation in the Gospel of Luke. It begins with a discussion of the foundational phenomenologies of Edmund Husserl and Martin Heidegger and then moves to the more recent work of several French phenomenologists, including Paul Ricoeur, Jean-Louis Chretien, and Michel Henry. The interpretation is then expanded through the philosophies of Luce Irigaray, Jean-Luc Marion, and Jacques Derrida. Finally, the phenomenologies of Maurice Merleau-Ponty and Martin Heidegger provide a means to interpret the Annunciation through theopoetics, as a text that is infused with possibility. Mary, filled with grace, is beckoned by the divine into possibility; responding in grace, she in turn beckons the divine into possibility. Transgressing the limits of language, this possibility slips into apophasis--into a moment of Gelassenheit, a mutual "letting-be" or releasement of Mary and the divine into a mystical union of love, a love that becomes manifest through a gift of life.

New Faces, New Possibilities by Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate (CARA) Pdf

Religious sisters have created educational and healthcare systems over the past two hundred years that have transformed the Catholic community in the United States. Through their ministry, sisters have served waves of immigrants and those pushed to the margins. The growing cultural diversity of newer sisters and the diminishing number of older sisters, therefore, is both a challenge and a creative moment to be critically examined. This book examines these changes in culture and ethnicity among sisters, the structural impact of diminishing numbers, and the creative response to this new reality for religious life in the United States. In it, sisters from a variety of generations, cultures, and institutes join with the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate (CARA) researchers to examine and reflect on CARA's recent research findings and their impact on the life and ministry of sisters today.

State of Grace by Joy Williams Pdf

NATIONAL BOOK AWARD NOMINEE • This "beautifully crafted" (The New York Times Book Review), haunting, profoundly disquieting novel manages to be at once sparse and lush, to combine Biblical simplicity with Gothic intensity and strangeness. It is the story of Kate, despised by her mother, bound to her father by ties stronger and darker than blood. It is the story of her attempted escapes—in detached sexual encounters, at a Southern college populated by spoiled and perverse beauties, and in a doomed marriage to a man who cannot understand what she is running from. Witty, erotic, searing acute, State of Grace bears the inimitable stamp of one of our finest and most provocative writers.

In God and Hamilton, Kevin Cloud offers precisely this kind of appreciative glimpse into the life of Alexander Hamilton. These pastoral reflections upon a life that was anything but dull and uninteresting are sure to inspire. Read this book and catch a new imagination for what it means to be human.” (Tim Suttle, pastor and author of Shrink: Faithful Ministry in a Church-Growth Culture) A Note from the Author: I will never forget the moment I saw Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton: An American Musical on Broadway. I walked out of the Richard Rogers Theatre that night knowing that I had seen a ground-breaking and brilliant Broadway musical. I also knew that Hamilton somehow become for me a deeply spiritual experience. I soon discovered that I was not the only one. I read so many reviews and watched so many interviews where people spoke of Hamilton as a life changing experience. Rosie O’Donnell even went so far as to call it “medicine that I need for my soul. It is vital to me; it feels like going to church.” In writing this book, I have come to see Hamilton as a story that will transform our lives. A story that teaches us about grace, shame, forgiveness, and despair. A story that invites us into the struggle for equality and challenges us to partner with God in his ultimate goal of bringing redemption to His creation. I pray that this story, which intersects insights from the musical, the lives of Alexander and Eliza Hamilton, and the story of Scripture, might transform your life as well.
