Health Humanities in Postgraduate Medical Education by Allan D. Peterkin,Anna Skorzewska Pdf

Most medical schools in the US, Canada and UK now incorporate some form of arts and humanities-based teaching into their curricula. What happens in residency is another story. Most postgraduate programs do not continue the thread of such teaching although many residents would like to deepen their understanding of the medical humanities before they move into practice. The humanities emphasize "the human side of medicine", and can provide a counterpoint to the reductionism of evidence-based medicine and technological hubris for young doctors as they apply new knowledge and skills in ambiguous, real-life encounters with patients who are living with complicated health problems. Humanities-based education can help both sides of the relationship: programs are shown to reduce burnout and mental health issues in young physicians, and can also help learning practitioners grapple with the most difficult aspects of their craft: how does one persuade patients on a course of treatment, while respecting informed consent? How does one work with families? How does one listen to and treat patients exhibiting self-harm tendencies? Available research may demonstrate the efficacy of such exposures, but provide little practical advice or resources for setting up programs across specialty and sub-specialty disciplines. Health Humanities in Post-Graduate Medical Education will fill this gap in knowledge translation for the thousands of residency programs worldwide, allowing educators, supervisors, and residents themselves to create robust and educationally sound workshops, seminars, study groups, lecture series, research and arts-based projects, publications and events.

Medical Education for the Future by Alan Bleakley,John Bligh,Julie Browne Pdf

The purpose of medical education is to benefit patients by improving the work of doctors. Patient centeredness is a centuries old concept in medicine, but there is still a long way to go before medical education can truly be said to be patient centered. Ensuring the centrality of the patient is a particular challenge during medical education, when students are still forming an identity as trainee doctors, and conservative attitudes towards medicine and education are common amongst medical teachers, making it hard to bring about improvements. How can teachers, policy makers, researchers and doctors bring about lasting change that will restore the patient to the heart of medical education? The authors, experienced medical educators, explore the role of the patient in medical education in terms of identity, power and location. Using innovative political, philosophical, cultural and literary critical frameworks that have previously never been applied so consistently to the field, the authors provide a fundamental reconceptualisation of medical teaching and learning, with an emphasis upon learning at the bedside and in the clinic. They offer a wealth of practical and conceptual insights into the three-way relationship between patients, students and teachers, setting out a radical and exciting approach to a medical education for the future. “The authors provide us with a masterful reconceptualization of medical education that challenges traditional notions about teaching and learning. The book critiques current practices and offers new approaches to medical education based upon sociocultural research and theory. This thought provoking narrative advances the case for reform and is a must read for anyone involved in medical education.” - David M. Irby, PhD, Vice Dean for Education, University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine; and co-author of Educating Physicians: A Call for Reform of Medical School and Residency "This book is a truly visionary contribution to the Flexner centenary. It is compulsory reading for the medical educationalist with a serious concern for the future - and for the welfare of patients and learners in the here and now." Professor Tim Dornan, University of Manchester Medical School and Maastricht University Graduate School of Health Professions Education.

Asynchronous Control for Networked Systems by María Guinaldo Losada,Francisco Rodríguez Rubio,Sebastián Dormido Bencomo Pdf

This book sheds light on networked control systems; it describes different techniques for asynchronous control, moving away from the periodic actions of classical control, replacing them with state-based decisions and reducing the frequency with which communication between subsystems is required. The text focuses specially on event-based control. Split into two parts, Asynchronous Control for Networked Systems begins by addressing the problems of single-loop networked control systems, laying out various solutions which include two alternative model-based control schemes (anticipatory and predictive) and the use of H2/H∞ robust control to deal with network delays and packet losses. Results on self-triggering and send-on-delta sampling are presented to reduce the need for feedback in the loop. In Part II, the authors present solutions for distributed estimation and control. They deal first with reliable networks and then extend their results to scenarios in which delays and packet losses may occur. The novel results presented in Asynchronous Control for Networked Systems are transmitted in a concise and clear style supported by simulation and experimental examples. Some applications are also provided. Academic researchers and graduate students investigating control theory, control engineering and computer communications systems can use this monograph to learn how asynchronous control helps tackle the problems of networked systems in centralized and distributed schemes. Control practitioners at work in power systems, vehicle coordination and traffic networks will also find this book helpful in improving the performance of their systems.

Development of Anti-Asthma Drugs by Derek R. Buckle,Harry Smith Pdf

Development of Anti-Asthma Drugs reviews existing asthma treatments and novel approaches currently under investigation, in the context of their mode of action and clinical effectiveness, in the hope that this might lead to a greater understanding of the factors involved in the expression of the disease and, therefore, in the design of better drugs. It is planned based on the concept of the causes and treatment of asthma, This book is organized in three main parts. Part I deals with the nature of asthma, its pathological mechanisms, natural history and epidemiology. Part II discusses mediators associated with asthma including platelet-activating factor, leukotrienes and histamine. Part II covers pharmaceutical approaches in the development of anti-asthma drugs and includes sections on inhibitors of mediator release and competitive and functional antagonists. This book will be of interest to persons dealing with studies on anti-asthma drugs and those interested in pharmacological development.

New Horizons in Patient Safety: Understanding Communication by Annegret Hannawa,Albert Wu,Robert Juhasz Pdf

This case studies book is a unique, practical, cutting-edge, and indispensable go-to resource for front-line practitioners and educators in medicine. Each case study (chapter) is framed by a set of introductory learning objectives, an evaluation section, thought-provoking discussion questions, and references to further readings. Furthermore, the book is conveniently organized along the continuum of medical care delivery, providing quick access to ad-hoc solutions in safety- and quality-compromised situations, illustrating how skillful communication can be the key to a more effective prevention, intervention, and response to “close calls” and adverse events. The case studies book is unique and innovative in its interdisciplinary integration of the contemporary literature in communication science with current “hot buttons” of patient safety. It manifests a valuable interdisciplinary collaboration by translating the basic tenets of human communication science for practitioners of medicine, providing a conceptual, evidence-based foundation for formulating communication-based practice guidelines to advance patient safety and quality of care. The case studies put communication theory into practice to facilitate experiential learning, granting insights into the breadth and diverse aspects of safe and high quality healthcare delivery. Thought-provoking discussion questions and references for further reading make this book a valuable reference for medical practitioners across the world.
