Knowledge Based Expert Systems in Transportation by Louis Franklin Cohn,Roswell A. Harris Pdf

This synthesis will be of interest to engineering managers, design engineers, traffic engineers, computer personnel, and others interested in advanced computer applications for highway design and operations. Information is provided on the history of knowledge based expert systems (KBES), current applications of these systems in transportation departments, potential applications, and hardware and software requirements. Additionally, some detailed programming information from two operational expert systems is included. There is growing use of computers in transportation departments, and KBES represent an area in which several highway agencies are gaining experience and obtaining promising results. This report of the Transportation Research Board describes the current state of the practice with respect to KBES, as well as the historical development of expert systems and the more general field of artificial intelligence. Experience with expert systems in transportation in summarized, including discussions of expert systems in operation and in development, based on a review of the literature and a survey of the states and experts in this field.

Hardcover DM 78,- ISBN 3-540-97171-8 ***LANGTEXT*** While expert systems have become a popular topic in the computing, medical and engineering fields, the expert system is still a new technology in urban planning. This book introduces expert systems for problem solving in urban planning and describes the way in which heuristic knowledge and rules of thumb of expert planners can be represented through computer programs. The book presents practical applications of expert systems for solving many important urban planning problems, particularly those issues that many practicing planners face in their daily operations. Problems and issues discussed are grouped in the following categories: - Land Use Planning - Transportation Planning - Site Selection and Analysis - Environmental Planning - Conflict Mediation and Legal Disputes - Future Developments and Directions Expert Systems: Applications to Urban Planning will benefit both urban planners who wish to learn how this new technology might be applied to their daily work as well as researchers in expert systems seeking new ideas for systems design.

Knowledge-Based Systems, Four-Volume Set by Cornelius T. Leondes Pdf

The design of knowledge systems is finding myriad applications from corporate databases to general decision support in areas as diverse as engineering, manufacturing and other industrial processes, medicine, business, and economics. In engineering, for example, knowledge bases can be utilized for reliable electric power system operation. In medicine they support complex diagnoses, while in business they inform the process of strategic planning. Programmed securities trading and the defeat of chess champion Kasparov by IBM's Big Blue are two familiar examples of dedicated knowledge bases in combination with an expert system for decision-making. With volumes covering "Implementation," "Optimization," "Computer Techniques," and "Systems and Applications," this comprehensive set constitutes a unique reference source for students, practitioners, and researchers in computer science, engineering, and the broad range of applications areas for knowledge-based systems.

A Demonstration of Expert Systems Applications in Transportation Engineering by Ardeshir Faghri,Michael J. Demetsky Pdf

Expert systems, a branch of artificial-intelligence studies, is introduced with a view to its relevance in transportation engineering. Knowledge engineering, the process of building expert systems or transferring knowledge from human experts to computers, is described. The general differences between expert systems and conventional computer programs are summarized. The architecture of the expert system is shown to separate knowledge of the problem domain (knowledge base) from general problem solving knowledge (inference engine). Different approaches to each of these tasks are described. Recent developments in computer software that support and simplify the development of expert systems are presented, and recent applications to three transportation engineering problems are described. Background information is given to recommend the development of a prototype expert system for traffic control in construction zones.

Expert Systems by M. Arockiasamy Pdf

Engineering, medicine, computer science, mathematics, and business all use applications of expert systems for problem solving that would normally require human skill. These expert systems solve varied problems with a similar procedure - so that knowledge of their use in other specialties will inevitably benefit yours. Expert Systems: Applications for Structural, Transportation, and Environmental Engineering provides a comprehensive, concise treatment of knowledge-based expert systems that introduces you to the flavor, concepts, and capacity of this powerful procedure. Expert Systems covers preliminary design of three-dimensional grids, design systems for low rise industrial buildings, preliminary design of frameworks, bridge design systems, and retaining wall design - especially the methodologies for these applications to structural design. The author presents design standards, typical expert systems for construction engineering and management applications, and the underlying concepts of expert systems, emphasizing bridge analysis, rating, and management. He describes the methodology and applications which aid the transportation and highway engineer in planning, design, and operation and addresses several applications in the fields of environmental and water resources engineering. Automation of the advice-giving of experts is used in design, process planning, manufacturing schedule, quality control, and diagnosis by a range of disciplines. Expert Systems increases your awareness of the versatility of expert systems in these disciplines and offers the theory and algorithms you need to use expert systems in design, maintenance, and construction.
