Poverty in Afghanistan by Mohammad Hakim Haider,Sumit Kumar Pdf

This book examines the patterns, characteristics, causes and coping mechanisms of the poor in Afghanistan applying econometric and statistical techniques. The authors address and identify the extent of poverty in Afghanistan over the years, the spatial patterns and regional imbalances of poverty in Afghanistan, the distinguishing characteristics of the poor in Afghanistan, and explore shocks faced by the poor in Afghanistan as well as subsequent coping strategies. Based on household level data collected under the ‘National Risk Vulnerability Assessment’ (NRVA) survey of 2003, 2005, 2007/08 and 2011/12 of Afghanistan, the authors identify options that may enable policy makers and other stakeholders to further enable the inclusion of the poor in development processes and to successfully cope with poverty and its adverse outcomes. This short book will be of interest to students, researchers, academicians, policymakers, international agencies and NGOs at international and national levels.

Although Afghanistan has made significant gains over the years, vulnerabilities remain. The economic program Afghanistan National Development Strategy (ANDS) has been developed to sustain democracy, reduce poverty, and improve growth. ANDS, an important milestone in the rebuilding and development of Afghanistan, serves as its Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper (PRSP) and uses the pillars, principles, and benchmarks of the Afghanistan Compact as a foundation to achieve its MDGs. It has given high priority to the security sector for implementing security policies and strategies and also for building an Afghan National Army for the country's security.

Afghanistan--state Building, Sustaining Growth, and Reducing Poverty by Anonim Pdf

"Afghanistan has come a long way since emerging from major conflict in late 2001. The economy has recovered strongly, growing by nearly 50% cumulatively in the last two years (not including drugs). Some three million internally and externally displaced Afghans have returned to their country. More than four million children, a third of them girls, are in school, and immunization campaigns have achieved considerable success. The Government has supported good economic performance by following prudent macroeconomic policies and it has made extraordinary efforts to develop key national programs and to revive social services like education and health. Nevertheless, Afghanistan remains one of the poorest countries in the world in terms of both per-capita incomes and social indicators, with large gender gaps. The difficult challenge of poverty reduction is made even more difficult by continuing insecurity, weak rule of law, and narcotics. Afghanistan - State Building, Sustaining Growth, and Reducing Poverty provides a greater understanding of the core challenges that lie ahead for Afghanistan and key priorities for national reconstruction. The Afghan economy has been shaped by more than two decades of debilitating conflict and has some very unusual features which this study analyzes. The authors argue that the country must break out of the vicious cycle that would keep it insecure, fragmented politically, weakly governed, poor, dominated by the illicit economy, and a hostage to the drug industry. The study presents key elements for a breakthrough in the next two years but the daunting agenda will require strong commitment, actions, and persistence on the part of the Government and robust support from the international community."

3,000 Days in Afghanistan by Chris Corsten Pdf

Did you ever wonder just what the hell we were doing in Afghanistan? After nearly 20 years of the U.S. presence in Afghanistan, there still seems to be no peace and stability in sight. In this book, Chris Corsten chronicles almost a decade of his experience there - watching the progress and the missteps. During his time as a U.S. Army Civil Affairs officer, trying to win hearts and minds on the ground. Then shedding the uniform as a civilian counternarcotics advisor, fighting against narcotics in the world's largest opium- and heroin-producing country. And finally as a manager for U.S.-funded humanitarian aid projects, working to help build economic prosperity in one of the world's most impoverished countries. See Afghanistan and its people through the successes and failures that Chris had experienced throughout his journey, and you may find a better appreciation of how dangerous and challenging the experiment in Afghanistan has been.

According to the national household survey conducted during the summer and autumn of 2005, poverty in Afghanistan (headcount rate) is about 33 percent. Economic performance since the fall of the Taliban regime has been strong, and macroeconomic stability has been maintained. During 2002–03 through 2006–07, real GDP growth has averaged 15 percent per year, reflecting a recovery in agriculture, donor-funded postwar reconstruction, and initial yet promising growth of a range of private sector activities. The macroeconomic policy framework is broadly in line with the authorities’ economic program.

Afghanistan in Transition by Richard Hogg,Claudia Nassif,World Bank,Camilo Gomez Osorio Pdf

More than a third of the population live below the poverty line, more than half are vulnerable and at serious risk of falling into poverty, and three-quarters are illiterate. Additionally, political uncertainty and insecurity could undermine Afghanistan's transition and development prospects. The large aid inflows that have benefited Afghanistan have also brought problems. Aid has underpinned much of the progress since 2001-including that in key services, infrastructure, and government administration-but it has also been linked to corruption, poor aid effectiveness, and weakened governance. Aid is estimated to be $15.7 billion-about the same as the size of the GDP in fiscal year 2011. Despite the large volume of aid, most international spending 'on' Afghanistan is not spent 'in' Afghanistan, as it leaves the economy through imports, expatriated profits of contractors, and outward remittances.

After years of research, numerous conversations, and gathering primary and secondary data, the authors decided to write a book to help Afghanistan end the vicious cycle of poverty, instability, inequality, and dependency by focusing on improving the country's outdated and sub-optimal education system. As such, this book is a comparative and critical analysis of the Afghan education system with plausible solutions based upon decades of teaching and educational administrative experience both inside and outside of Afghanistan. Some of the added features in this book include: (1) important interviews conducted with subject matter experts, (2) a focus group of 20 Afghan students sharing their experiences and perspectives on the education system in Afghanistan which helped form the topics, chapters, and structure of this book, (3) occasional text translation into the Farsi and Pashto languages, (4) best practices from countries throughout the world mentioned for learning and benchmarking purposes, (5) information written and presented in a simple manner for native English speakers and also English language learners, and (6) potential for this book to be used by many nations around the world to help improve their education systems.

Islamic Republic of Afghanistan: Enhanced Heavily Indebted Poor Countries Initiative - Decision Point Document and Debt Sustainability Analysis by International Monetary Fund Pdf

This paper presents the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan's decision point and debt sustainability analysis under the Enhanced Heavily Indebted Poor Countries Initiative. Protracted conflict and political instability have undermined Afghanistan's socioeconomic development, resulting in widespread poverty and weak social development. Nevertheless, Afghanistan's economy has achieved a major recovery since late 2001, with robust gross domestic product growth, albeit from a low level. The absence of officially recognized poverty estimates has prevented a systematic diagnosis of poverty in Afghanistan.

Report on Progress Toward Security and Stability in Afghanistan by Barry Leonard Pdf

After the attacks of 9/11, the U.S. and our international partners toppled the Taliban regime in Afghanistan, ending years of brutal misrule and denying al Qaeda a safe haven from which to launch its attacks. The U.S. strategic goals remain that Afghanistan is: (1) a reliable, stable ally in the War on Terror; (2) moderate and democratic, with a thriving private sector economy; (3) capable of governing its territory and borders; and (4) respectful of the rights of all its citizens. Achieving these goals requires the application of a whole-of-government approach, along multiple lines of operation, including security, governance, and development. This report describes both the progress we are making in achieving our national objectives, and the challenges we continue to face.

Afghanistan by International Monetary Fund Pdf

This Joint Staff Advisory Note discusses Afghanistan’s Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper's annual progress report. Afghanistan has experienced a number of extraordinary challenges that delayed its implementation. The security situation deteriorated markedly and has been dominated by the cross-border Taliban insurgency. Growth started to recover from a devastating drought. In May 2008, food and fuel prices peaked, leading to high inflation and pressure on the budget for additional fuel and food subsidies. These threats to macroeconomic stability have been accompanied by a period of political uncertainty for Afghanistan’s leadership.
