Practical Electro-Therapeutics (Classic Reprint) by Franklin Benjamin Gottschalk Pdf

Excerpt from Practical Electro-Therapeutics While our conception of the nature of electricity is largely theoretical, we by no means lack positive knowledge con cerning its actions and the laws that govern them. Great progress has been made in utilizing this agent in the arts, and by means of electro-therapeutics maladies are now cured that were formerly not amenable to treatment. There is only one kind of electricity, no matter how gen crated, but its actions vary widely according to the current and instrument used in employing. It. Investigators have demonstrated that both animal and veg etable life are due to and dependent upon electric conditions and it is more than likely that the organs of active nutrition give rise to electric currents. It is also true that animal organs and tissues are modified and influenced by electricity. There are many reasons why the work of the nervous system should be compared with the complex workings of an electrical battery. In health the nerves are all in a state of vibration, due in all probability to the electrical currents which traverse the body in every direction. When it loses its vibratory function, death and degeneration ensue. The various nerves respond to different vibrations. The optic nerve responds to very rapid vibrations, while large waves stimulate the nerves of the ear, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1912 edition. Excerpt: ...specialist alone is capable of distinguishing the varying shadows and densities. The negative should be made so as to distinctly show the parts under consideration. If the negative is found to be defective, another should be made; but, if this is impossible or not practical, the negative may be improved according to the process mentioned under photography. Many negatives are so poor that they can not be improved, and no time should be lost with them. The x-ray specialist should make himself thoroughly familiar with the normal appearance of the various parts of the human body as shown by the skiagraph, for only in this way can he hope to become a competent judge of a skiagraph. It must be remembered that a skiagraph is only a series of lights and shadows, of different densities, that to an untrained observer mean little or nothing. When studying the bony structures as seen in a skiagraph, many things must be carefully considered, and the age of the patient is by no means the least important. Physicians who view the skiagraphs of the joints of children for the first time are surprised at their normal appearance. The normal conditions of the different ages must be understood before abnormal conditions can be correctly diagnosed. Viewing the Negative.--Before an x-ray negative can be rightly interpreted, it is necessary to know the relative relation of the tube, parts skiagraphed, and Ihe plate. The finished picture will furnish good evidence of the position of the tube during the time of the exposure. If the object skiagraphed is too far from the plate, or the tube too close to the part skiagraphed, the finished skiagraph will be distorted or abnormally large. To examine a finished plate, it should be held with the film (gelatin) side toward...

Excerpt from Practical Electro-Therapeutics: A Manual of Laboratory Experimentation for Students of Medicine Such recognition is now, however, no longer withheld by those who are abreast of the best medical practice of the day and the study of electricity as a science, and by the laboratory method, is rapidly becoming an absolute essential in the educa tion of the general practitioner. In recognition of these facts an optional laboratory course in electricity for professional students was several years ago established in the University of Michigan. The need of a suit able manual was quickly felt, and in 1884 Professor J. W. Lang ley, by whom the course was organized, published what may be. Manual of Practical Electrotherapy by Singh Jagmohan Pdf

Manual of Practical Electrotherapy has been written in a systematic manner in a very simple approach for the students, professionals of physiotherapy, teachers, doctors, rehabilitation professionals, other paramedics and public in general. Recently lots of advances have taken place in the field of electrotherapy. Utmost efforts have been made to cover all the necessary aspects of electrotherapy. All chapters have been written in a very simple and lucid manner. In ancient times, two modes of treatments?Physical therapy and Chemotherapy were available to mankind, i.e. treatment by physical means and treatment by chemical means. Physical means included the use of sun, earth, air, water, electricity, etc. Chemical means included chemical agents which were therapeutically useful for clinical purposes. Electrotherapy is an ever advancing field. Recent advances have made electrotherapy very interesting, lots of new modalities have been found effective for the treatment of various ailments. Utmost efforts have been made to make the textbook uptodate. Starting from the history of electrotherapy to the recent advances, all the aspects have been covered in details. I have tried to give a fairly complete coverage of the subject describing the most common modalities known to be employed by physiotherapists. The intention is to explain how these modalities work and their effects upon the patient. In the initial chapter, I have tried to lay the foundations of the principles of electrotherapy because a thorough understanding of these principles will ultimately lead to safer and more effective clinical practice. The nature, production, effects and uses on the body tissues of each modality are explained and illustrated.
