Practical Stone Masonry by Peter Hill,John David Pdf

Practical Stone Masonry is the first major book in nearly seventy years on the craft of the stonemason. Today the work of the stonemason is almost exclusively confined to the repair of historic buildings, requiring a full working knowledge of the detailed traditional craft practices relating to repairs. This book addresses that need. It covers the basic methods of working stone, the making of specialized tools, and, for the first time, a full analysis of the procedures for setting-out for repairs. A broad description of the nature and problems of stone also includes guidance on selection. In addition, the authors look at the causes of decay in stone and outline methods for repair of both stone and mortar. "Practical Stone Masonry" contains essential advice for working masons and apprentices, and all those engaged in planning and supervising such works. It includes: the basic methods of working stone; how to make specialized tools; the procedures for setting-out for repairs explained; and, the nature and problems of stone plus a guide to selection.

Practical Masonry: A Guide to the Art of Stone Cutting by William R. Purchase Pdf

Regarded by many as the stonemason's bible, Practical Masonry has for many years been one of the best technical stone masonry books available for both apprentices and experienced masons. Originally written in 1896 and published by Crosby Lockwood & Son of London, it met with great acclaim and the correspondence received by the author was that of thanks and praise at such a well written and concise technical book. Following the constructive feedback W R Purchase wrote a second edition in which he included three more chapters: Roman and Grecian moldings (both illustrative) and a glossary of terms. This work was then followed by further editions and by 1904 when the fifth edition was published Purchase had added further chapters including: Masonry Estimating and Quantity Surveying; Building Stones, marble and granite (including detailed lists of specific stones available) and finally Tables of Diameters, Circumferences and Areas of circles. As with many technical books that go out of print it became more difficult for people to purchase this book as the years passed. This latest edition published by Donhead Publishing will ensure that the work of W R Purchase can again reach and assist all those who study or are involved with this ancient craft.

Modern Practical Masonry by Edmund George Warland Pdf

This work provides a clear and simple guide to the subject, based on meticulous and beautiful drawings. Organized in three sections, it includes chapters on construction details; methods of working particular structural shapes; both basic and advanced geometry and setting-out. It also includes forms and tables omitted from later editions to be used as templates for costing and estimating work. These are as relevant today as they were in the 1920s. It includes a new introduction by Christopher Weeks.

Practical Masonry by William R. Rurchase Pdf

Excerpt from Practical Masonry: A Guide to the Art of Stone Cutting Comprising the Construction, Setting-Out, and Working of Stairs, Circular Work, Arches, Niches, Domes, Pendentives, Vaults, Tracery Windows, Etc. Etc.; For the Use of Students, Masons, and Other Workmen Tms work has been compiled, not with the view of super seding any of the works already published dealing with the architectural or geometrical side of the stone-cutter's art, but as a means of introducing the student of Masonry to the practical work of everyday life in the workshop and on the building. It has no pretensions to instruct skilled workmen, but is intended to initiate young beginners in the craft into the rules and principles of good masonry. It is the result of many years' attentive observation and practical experience, acquired by the Author first as an Operative stone-mason, and afterwards as a foreman mason, on some of our largest public buildings. All the cases commonly met with are worked out, and, when the general principles applying to these are understood, their extension to any unusual question which may occur should not be difficult. The student is assumed, however, to have some knowledge Of geometrical drawing and projection, which indeed is indispensable. Most of the examples given are from actual work. In further explanation of his aim in compiling the volume, the Author may be allowed to cite the subjoined extract from an address delivered a couple of years ago by Mr. J. H. Morton, President of the Northern Architectural Association.* Mr. Morton said that it must be allowed that no trade could be properly learned out of the workshop.
