Major Messages from Minor Prophets by Jeffrey A. Ingraham Pdf

During the early part of 2019, our Sunday school lessons centered on the Old Testament prophets, particularly the minor prophets. It was a great challenge to understand their messages and the messages' relevancy for our times. It seemed as if there really were no significant differences in these books of prophecy, as the minor prophets all seemed to be saying the same thing. Of course, there are differences in the messages and ministries of the minor prophets, hence, my attempt to show so. My goal was to summarize the writings and ministries of the minor prophets and show their relevancy for today. This I did through a series of sermons that were initially delivered in the Calvary Baptist Church during the winter of 2019. My goal was to make the teachings of the minor prophets understandable to every segment of our membership. The approach was more inspirational than overly scholarly. Each chapter of the book is provocatively titled and begins with a story or illustration that centers on that particular subject. The intent was to reference something that the reader could relate to and see how the prophet addresses that matter. Of course, not every single detail of the prophet's message is included due to the constraints of time, etc. My hope is that the readers of this book will come to know God better and to have a relationship with him. They will see that in spite of people's imperfections, our God is perfect and faithful toward us. The minor prophets challenge us to live faithfully for God. To the extent I have been able to evoke this kind of response from my readers, I give all glory and honor to God.

God's Plumb Line by Alex A. Gondola Pdf

"The Hebrew prophets were truth-tellers, called to proclaim God's word to the people of their own generations. In this book of sermons Alex Gondola is a truth-teller, carrying on the prophetic tradition by bringing the penetrating message of the Minor Prophets to bear on our twenty-first-century American context. Through the author's use of paraphrase, the telling of stories and his own pastoral interpretation, God's judging and redeeming word spoken by the prophets comes alive in these sermons and challenges us to be bearers of justice and righteousness in our own time and culture. I highly recommend this book of sermons for reading and reflection. "Rev. Dr. Steve Rettenmayer Faculty Member of the Jerusalem Center for Biblical Studies A student and teacher of the word for nearly four decades, Alex Gondola provides a rare glimpse into the lives of the minor prophets, reminding us of God's consistent commands of love, justice, and repentance. As Gondola uncovers the words of the minor prophets, he carefully shows us how to connect their prophetic ministries to our modern lives. "If God measured our home life against the plumb line of God's word, would God find us wanting -- wanting more of the acceptance, tolerance, and patience we are supposed to give?" This is the question Gondola comes back to again and again throughout his examination of the minor prophets, and as we travel back in time with him throughout this lectionary, we begin to understand that the words of the minor prophets hold profound influence toward shaping us as Christ-followers. "God's Plumb Line: Preaching from the Not-So-Minor-Prophets" is a portal filled with insight and challenge, reminding us to "drink so deeply at the well of worship that justice rolls down like water and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream." Also included for each chapter are hymn suggestions, children's lesson suggestions, discussion questions, and an Annotated Bibliography. Alex A. Gondola Jr. served as an Associate Pastor, Pastor, and Senior Pastor in United Church of Christ congregations since 1975. He retired in 2011 and currently is Interim Pastor at the First Congregational Church (United Church of Christ) in Milford, New Hampshire. A graduate of Allegheny College (B.A.), Andover Newton Theological School (M.Div.), and Colgate Rochester Divinity School (D.Min.), Gondola also has studied at Hartford Seminary and The New College of Divinity of the University of Edinburgh (Scotland). He is the author of "Come As You Are," "Don't Forget The Child," "Holidays Are Holy Days," "Pray Like This..." (CSS), and numerous articles. He also contributed seven stewardship sermons to the CSS anthology "From Every Angle."

Loving God and Disturbing Men by Donald A. Leggett Pdf

Loving God and Disturbing Men is an excellent resource for preachers and teachers that provides a balance between technical scholarly commentaries and popular devotional works. Its unique strength lies in the author's ability to show the relevance of the prophets for the contemporary church and its ministry. Readers will appreciate the detailed scholarly treatment of the prophetic literature the author provides. But equally important, the author demonstrates that what the prophets said about God, evil, repentance, history, social justice and eschatology has the ring of immediacy for us. Moreover, the study is helpful in treating the lives of the prophets as models of spirituality in prayer, suffering and preaching. While the book is primarily for those who preach from the prophets, it is suitable for a much wider audience. "A book on preaching from the prophets is desperately needed today by the Christian audience if we are to be faithful in declaring the whole counsel of God to our contemporary generation. Professor Donald Leggett is to be commended on his desire to aid the Christian community and its proclaimers in advancing this cause. It is a pleasure to commend this work." -Walter C. Kaiser, Jr. "Here is a pump-primer and launch-pad for preachers. Dr. Leggett's aim is to show us the wisdom of the prophets in a way that will excite us an enable us to share what we have seen. I appreciate this book, for I think it will do its job. And the job is an important one " -J. I. Packer Donald A. Leggett (Th.D., Free University, Amsterdam) is Professor Emeritus of Old Testament at Tyndale University College and Seminary in Toronto, Ontario. For 25 years he also served as a pastor and elder at Village Green Baptist Church in London, Ontario.

Minor Prophets in a Major Key by Chris Woodall Pdf

All Scripture is God-breathed, but not every portion of it is embraced by Christians with equal vigor. Tribal lists, specific sacrificial obligations, seemingly endless genealogical records, and apparently gratuitous acts of warfare are readily scanned over. But could the minor prophets be added to that list? Should they be? They certainly seem more difficult to locate for many of us than, say, the books of Moses or the Psalms. The writer is clear in his assessment from the start, positing that our relative ignorance of these twelve books, tucked away at the end of the Old Testament, impinges negatively on the Christian believer's walk. Covering a period of around four hundred years, each book is revealed through two contextual settings: the historical and that which was personal to the individual pensmith, before a brief overview reveals the main points of that author's writing. The bulk of each chapter is concerned with the ""Major Key"" of the title. Taking a verse or two from each of the minor prophets, Chris Woodall develops a theme to bring practical application with a potentially positive impact to life as a Christian in the twenty-first century from lessons over two-and-a-half thousand years old. Chris Woodall is former Associate Professor of Dogmatics at North-West University, South Africa. This is his fourth book for Wipf and Stock. The first three, Covenant: the Basis of God's Self-Disclosure (2011), Kingdom: the Expression of God's Rule (2012), and Atonement: God's Means of Effecting Man's Reconciliation (2015) are also available from this publisher and other outlets.

Preaching to a Postmodern World by Graham M. Johnston Pdf

While growing churches dot our urban centers and country landscapes, church-goers and students today are actually less likely to maintain a Christian worldview than in the past. In fact, the majority of society does not even believe in objective truth. A minister out of touch with this culture is like an uninformed missionary trying to teach in a foreign country. To communicate God's Word effectively in the twenty-first century, teachers need to know how to connect with and confront an audience of postmodern listeners. In Preaching to a Postmodern World, Johnston shows pastors, seminary students, professors, lay teachers, and church leaders can reach the present age without selling out to it. The book discusses how to: • distinguish between modernism and postmodernism • understand postmodern worldviews • change the style of preaching without compromising the substance • take advantage of new opportunities provided by the cultural shift • show an inattentive society the relevance of God's truth The author's keen insights into contemporary pop and media culture also help equip speakers to address today's listeners with clarity and relevance.

The good news from the Minor Prophets is that, even in dire times, God speaks. While the Minor Prophets are among the most succinct books of the Old Testament, their theological richness has much to offer us today. And not only did they have something to say to their original audience, but God continues to speak through their words in ways that are of utmost importance for the continued flourishing of God's people. Filled with helpful exegetical insights, this book is an invaluable guide for students, pastors, and scholars looking for a cohesive exploration of these often-overlooked books of the Hebrew Bible. More than a survey of the text, each chapter offers theological insights that help frame the message of the Minor Prophets for preaching and living in our world today. This introduction contextualizes the Minor Prophets within a larger biblical-theological framework, illuminating these twelve books as masterful works of literature that address the realities of human life with unblinking honesty and uncompromising hope.

Preaching to Postmoderns by Robert Kysar,Joseph M. Webb Pdf

How does one preach to a congregation immersed in a postmodern culture outside the church, but often finding itself in another culture within its walls? Do the postmodern criticisms offer any opportunities to the preacher for addressing the great truths of Scripture in new and fresh ways? Robert Kysar and Joseph M. Webb, both scholar-preachers, believe that they do. Preaching to Postmoderns: New Perspectives for Proclaiming the Message seeks to inform and encourage pastors who want to expand their horizons. Webb and Kysar have addressed the need for pastors to understand the staggering numbers of new approaches to biblical interpretation and the bewildering choices for sermon preparation that they represent. In this book they offer introductions to each of the major types of interpretive methods and point out the implications for each in preparing a sermon. They successfully move the theories of biblical interpretation out of the ivory tower and into the pastor's study. To exemplify how each of the major methods impact the preaching task, they offer a sample sermon for each method. This is a book that will bring pastors up-to-date in biblical interpretation while demonstrating what difference it makes for preachers as they seek to use the various methods.

A Commentary on THE MINOR PROPHETS by David Pawson Pdf

David Pawson looks at the messages of these so-called “minor prophets” and says: I do not like that term. To God all prophets are important, whether they speak a little or a lot. Even if God only gave you three words for somebody else, that is prophecy. You don’t need to do it at length for fifty years as some prophets did. There are some prophets in the Old Testament who only speak once, and then, as far as we know, they disappear; but they have given a message from God. This is all a prophet is: someone who has heard a message and passes it on to the right people. It is such a simple ministry. You don’t need to be theologically educated; you don’t need to be a public speaker. In fact, God seems to entrust this ministry to those who don’t have a gift of oratory. It is exciting to hear ordinary folk, who would never be able to get up into a pulpit and preach a sermon, hear from God and pass on a word from him.
