Prenatal Diagnosis of Orofacial Malformations by Gabriele Tonni,Waldo Sepulveda,Amy E. Wong Pdf

This book describes how different diagnostic techniques may facilitate the prenatal identification of orofacial malformations. The role of standard two-dimensional ultrasound is documented and explained, but detailed attention is also paid to the use of three-dimensional (3D) ultrasound, including the novel 3D reslicing technique, and to the value of complementary magnetic resonance imaging. The malformations considered include cleft lip, cleft lip and palate, ocular malformations, abnormalities associated with fetal aneuploidy, and tumors. These conditions are depicted in numerous high-quality images accompanied by thorough and informative descriptions of imaging findings. The excellence of the illustrative material and the caliber of the authors, who are leading international experts in the field, ensure that Prenatal Diagnosis of Orofacial Malformations will be an invaluable tool for obstetricians and gynecologists.

First and Mid Trimester Ultrasound Diagnosis of Orofacial Clefts by Lakshmy Ravi Selvaraj,Thasleem Ziyaullah Pdf

This book aims to highlight all the existing information available on first and mid-trimester imaging of palate in prenatal ultrasound and to develop a methodical approach in imaging the palate. As formation of the palate is completed by 11 weeks of gestation and as there are no evolving changes in palatine anatomy at the mid-trimester, diagnosis of palatine clefts can now completely be shifted to late first-trimester. First-trimester evaluation of palate is now gaining importance and a number of techniques have currently been proposed by different authors. This book covers the existing literature and recent 2D and 3D techniques in evaluating palate and helps in the early detection of palatine clefts in the first trimester. Orofacial clefting is one of the most common birth defects and the burden of it in developing countries is substantial. This book helps in improving the counseling options for the obstetrician and the couple early in gestation. It includes 2D and 3D images of various types of palatine clefts and the nuances in imaging the secondary palate extensively. 3D images of the palate also help the multi-disciplinary team especially the maxillofacial surgeons involved in managing orofacial clefts. It also includes videos for easy understanding. This book is a ready reckoner for the imaging specialists and students /trainees involved in prenatal diagnosis. It provides essential information in diagnosing orofacial cleft both to the novice and to the skilled professionals involved in the field of diagnostic fetal ultrasound.

Congenital Anomalies by Stefania Tudorache Pdf

Nowadays, nobody can imagine practicing obstetrics without using obstetrical ultrasound. Working in the prenatal diagnosis field requires dedication, patience, skills, experience, caution, and empathy. The concept of this book was guided by the desire to provide some help to the ultrasound operators. On a daily basis, they are confronted with the challenging task of ruling out or suspecting/confirming the diagnosis of fetal anomalies, either structural or chromosomal. The chapters of this book contain objective and exhaustive updated reviews of the pertinent literature, so that the reader would have a wide reference basis on each subject. Yet, many authors scan the fetus themselves or are directly involved with managing pregnancies with structural malformations or chromosomal anomalies. They kindly shared their personal experience and lessons learned over the years. This book is beneficial for all the professionals working in the prenatal diagnosis.

Teratological Testing by T.V.N. Persaud Pdf

The study of birth defects has assumed an importance even greater now than in the past because mortality rates attributed to congenital anomalies have declined far less than those for other causes of death, such as infectious and nutritional diseases. It is estimated that as many as 50% of all pregnancies terminate as miscarriages. In the majority of cases this is the result of faulty development. Major congenital malformations are found in at least 2% of all liveborn infants, and 22% of all stillbirths and infant deaths are associated with severe congenital anomalies. Teratological studies of an experimental nature are neither ethical nor justifiable in humans. Numerous investigations have been carried out in laboratory animals and other experimental models in order to improve our understanding of abnormal intra-uterine development. In less than two decades the field of experimental teratology has advanced phenomenally. As a result of the wide range of information that is now accumulating, it has become possible to obtain an insight into the causes, mec.;hanisms and prevention of birth defects. However, considerable work will be needed before these problems can be resolved. The· contributions in this volume deal primarily with the areas of terato logical evaluation and the use of selected animal models for the study of con genital anomalies. It is not only a documentation of the latest experimental work, but it also indicates new and important areas for future research.

Normal and Abnormal Fetal Face Atlas by Jean-Marc Levaillant,Jean-Philippe Bault,Bernard Benoit,Gérard Couly Pdf

This atlas offers a guide to studying the fetal face by means of ultrasound analysis. It describes key phases in cranial-facial development, allowing the reader to learn the related semiology from its most simple iteration to the most complex one. The overall examination of a newborn’s face offers a rich source of information and can guide the general examination. The same applies in the context of fetal ultrasound examination. The analytical study of the fetal face not only makes it possible to screen for anomalies related to the face itself, but also yields valuable insights into the brain, the limbs, and the heart. In addition, it allows ultra-sonographers to unravel the puzzle of fetal dimorphism. Written in a pedagogical style, the book guides walks the reader through the diagnostic reasoning process step by step. The authors are pioneers in this field and teach in various university and master’s degree ultrasound programs. Their aim is to share with readers their diagnostic approaches and their knowledge and passion for 2D and 3D ultrasound techniques. Each chapter includes algorithms, biometry curves, and simple guidelines that allow users to go “from sign to syndrome”. The first chapter, which focuses on innovative embryology adapted to the needs of ultra-sonographers, was written by Gérard Couly, a maxilla-facial surgeon and the founding father of the specialty>
