Presbyterian Worship in America by Julius Melton Pdf

Presbyterian Worship in America is the first fully documented historical survey of its theme in the United States. Its value is to be found in a combination of broad painting of the major trends with delightfully detailed vignettes of city and country congregations at worship. Horton Davies Melton exposes the tension between freedom and order which has always existed among American Presbyterians.... This concise, well-researched and well-written book will be valuable for students of American religious history as well as for pastors and laymen responsible for guiding the worship of their congregations. James H. Smylie Dr. Melton...surveys discussions of [worship] in the church press and in books, arranged loosely according to New School evangelism and Old School formalism. Particularly valuable are the sketches of such colorful individuals as Charles Baird, Charles Shields, Levi Ward, Benjamin Comegys, and Henry van Dyke. James H. Nichols

Presbyterian Reformers in Central Africa by Robert Benedetto,Winifred K. Vass Pdf

This volume contains 123 documents which illustrate the early history of the American Presbyterian Congo Mission and its struggle for human rights in the Congo from 1890-1918. The documents, many of which have never previously been published, are crucial to a full understanding of both the work of the Presbyterian Mission and its impact on the social, political, and religious life of the Congo. The book is divided into four parts. Part One documents the founding and early history of the Presbyterian Mission from 1890 to 1898. Part Two documents the deterioration of social conditions in the Congo under King Leopold, and the reform campaigns initiated by the American Mission in Britain and the United States. Part Three consists of documents related to the 1909 libel trial of William M. Morrison and William H. Sheppard, the principal leaders of the American Mission. Part Four documents the Mission's reaction to continuing human rights abuses, particularly religious persecution, under Belgian rule to 1918. The documents are annotated and the volume contains an introduction and an index.

The Greening of Protestant Thought by Robert Booth Fowler Pdf

The Greening of Protestant Thought traces the increasing influence of environmentalism on American Protestantism since the first Earth Day, which took place in 1970. Robert Booth Fowler explores the extent to which ecological concerns permeate Protestant thought and examines contemporary controversies within and between mainline and fundamentalist Protestantism over the Bible's teachings about the environment. Fowler explores the historical roots of environmentalism in Protestant thought, including debates over God's relationship to nature and the significance of the current environmental crisis for the history of Christianity. Although he argues that mainline Protestantism is becoming increasingly 'green,' he also examines the theological basis for many fundamentalists' hostility toward the environmental movement. In addition, Fowler considers Protestantism's policy agendas for environmental change, as well as the impact on mainline Protestant thinking of modern eco-theologies, process and creation theologies, and ecofeminism.

The Jiangyin Mission Station by Lawrence D. Kessler Pdf

Lawrence Kessler uses the Jiangyin mission station in the Shanghai region of China to explore Chinese-American cultural interaction in the first half of the twentieth century. He concludes that the Protestant missionary movement was welcomed by the Chinese not because of the religious message it spread but because of the secular benefits it provided. Like other missions, the Jiangyin Station, which was sponsored by the First Presbyterian Church of Wilmington, North Carolina, combined evangelism with social welfare programs and enjoyed a respected position within the local community. By 1930, the station supported a hospital and several schools and engaged in anti-opium campaigns and local peacekeeping efforts. In many ways, however, Christianity was a disruptive force in Chinese society, and Kessler examines Chinese ambivalence toward the mission movement, the relationship between missions and imperialism, and Westerners' response to Chinese nationalism. He also addresses the Jiangyin Station's close ties to, and impact upon, its supporting church in Wilmington.

The chapters highlight how the particular ways Presbyterians framed the Reformed Tradition made slavery an especially problematic and fraught issue for adherents to the faith, and led to a variety of reactions to slavery—ranging from abolitionism, to indifference, to support.
