Prescribed Fire Impacts on Recreational Wildlands by Philip N. Omi Pdf

Excerpt from Prescribed Fire Impacts on Recreational Wildlands: A Status Review and Assessment of Research Needs Finally, Wright and Bailey's (in press) book entitled Fire Ecology: United States and Southern Canada should add to the fire ecology literature. It is scheduled for release in February, 1982. The remainder of this section deals specifically with forest ecosystems, grassland and rangeland ecosystems, and shrubland and woodland ecosystems. Because of the large volume of literature (especially concerning forest ecosystems), it is not feasible to elaborate on specific fire effects. Interested readers should refer to the cited works for additional details. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Introduction to Prescribed Fire in Southern Ecosystems by Thomas A. Waldrop,Scott L. Goodrick Pdf

Prescribed burning is an important tool throughout Southern forests, grasslands, and croplands. The need to control fire became evident to allow forests to regenerate. This manual is intended to help resource managers to plan and execute prescribed burns in Southern forests and grasslands. A new appreciation and interest has developed in recent years for using prescribed fire in grasslands, especially hardwood forests, and on steep mountain slopes. Proper planning and execution of prescribed fires are necessary to reduce detrimental effects, such as the impacts on air and downstream water quality. Managing Smoke at the Wildland-urban Interface by Dale D. Wade Pdf

When prescribed burning is conducted at the wildland-urban interface (WUI), the smoke that is produced can sometimes inconvenience people, but it can also cause more serious health and safety problems. The public is unlikely to continue to tolerate the use of prescribed fire, regardless of the benefits, if burn managers cannot keep smoke out of smoke-sensitive areas. In the South, forest management organizations commonly require that plans for prescribed burns pass a smoke screening review and some States require such a review before they will authorize a burn. Current screening systems, however, do not incorporate criteria for use at the WUI. This guide describes modifications to the Southern Smoke Screening System for burns at the WUI. These modifications couple new research findings with the collective experience of burners who have extensively used the 1976 Southern Smoke Screening System. This new smoke screening system is designed for use on burns less than 50 acres in size and has undergone several years of successful field testing in Florida.

Prescribed Burning in California Wildlands Vegetation Management by Harold Biswell Pdf

Harold Biswell's decades of research and field experience were a major factor in developing policies of controlled or prescribed burning, which mimics or reintroduces the natural fire cycle. This comprehensive study introduces the principles and practices of prescribed burning, which apply far beyond California, within a historical and ecological perspective. Available for the first time in paperback, with a new foreword by James Agee, this book places Biswell's study—and his legacy—in the context of recent developments in the field.

Global Application of Prescribed Fire by John R. Weir,J Derek Scasta Pdf

Global Application of Prescribed Fire provides a first-hand perspective of the various methods and ways people around the world view and use prescribed fire. It covers the logistics, constraints and social dynamics surrounding the intentional use and application of fire by humans, and demonstrates how, why, when and where prescribed fire is used in different regions. Written by international experts, the book has four key objectives: explore new techniques, ideas and thoughts on how to apply prescribed fire from a global perspective; provide regional case studies covering issues that may constrain or enhance prescribed fire projects; stimulate cross-cultural conversations about how fires function in ecosystems; and relate prescribed fire to wildfire regimes with implications for protecting life and property, as well as sustaining local fire cultures and unique fire-dependent flora and fauna. Global Application of Prescribed Fire enhances our understanding and knowledge about the application of prescribed fire. This comprehensive book will provide fire practitioners, researchers, agencies and policymakers with key ecological and managerial insight of how prescribed fires are conducted around the globe.

Fire Social Science Research from the Pacific Southwest Research Station by Deborah J. Chavez Pdf

Fire events often have a large impact on recreation and tourism, yet these issues had not been addressed from a social science perspective. There are three distinct lines of research to address: examine values/attitudes and behaviors of recreation residence owners and year-round residents in the wildland-urban interface; examine recreationists¿ perceptions about fire suppression and postfire forest health issues; and examine perceptions and beliefs about recreation activities and impacts to fire-prone ecosystems in the wildland-urban interface. This report includes 17 of these studies grouped into four major topical headings: recreation use research, commun. research, program eval. and interface residents research, and trust research. Charts and tables.
