Pressure Gradients in Bridgman Anvil Devices by Laird C. Towle Pdf

Experimental evidence regarding pressure gradients in Bridgman anvil devices is reviewed and some new experimental data are presented. Although there are many differences in details, all the experimental evidence is found to fit a general pattern. A simple empirical relationship describing the pressure distribution is derived which is consistent with experimental observation. The experimentally determined pressure is used to estimate errors introduced into various types of anvil experiments by pressure gradients. Numerical values for the correction factors are given in graphical form for a wide range of experimental conditions. Analysis of shear experiments indicates that pressure gradients are much smaller under dynamic conditions. Analysis also shows that the peripheral sample region which is partially nonload-supporting frequently has a greater detrimental effect on anvil experiments than does the pressure gradient which exists over the central portion of the sample cell. Shear Strength of Twelve Grossly Deformed Metals at High Pressures and Temperatures by Robert E. Riecker Pdf

The shear strength of grossly deformed tungsten, germanium, nickel, beryllium, uranium, copper, gold, silver, aluminum, magnesium, bismuth, and tin was measured in an opposed anvil shear apparatus at pressures up to 150 kb at 27C, and for gold, silver, and copper to 900C. The shear data agree with independent strength measurements at low pressures, but differ significantly from high-pressure shear-strength measurements made by other investigators. The data on the noble metals also fit a simple empirical formula relating the temperature and pressure dependence of the shear strength. (Author).

Shear Strength, Polymorphism, and Mechanical Behavior of Olivine, Enstatite, Diopside, Labradorite, and Pyrope Garnet by Robert E. Riecker,Thomas Peter Rooney Pdf

Four hundred and seventeen shear and compression tests were completed on five minerals: olivine, enstatite, diopside, labradorite, and pyrope garnet. These minerals are assumed to represent the principal constituents of an upper mantle rock model. Petrographic examination and x-ray analyses indicate that the minerals deform cataclastically at low pressures and temperatures, with intragranular flow beginning at 30 kb normal pressure. Temperature enhances ductility, indicated at high pressures by x-ray line broadening on diffraction patterns and the appearance of kink bands in thin sections. Two phenomena of geophysical importance have been discovered during shear testing: (1) dehydration of less than 5 percent by volume of serpentine weakens dunite by more than 30 percent as the temperature is raised from 300C to 520C; (2) orthorhombic enstatite readily inverts to monoclinic polymorph under the influence of shear stress at all pressures and the temperatures to 920C and 50 kb. The inversion is accompanied by a small, rapid change in volume, sufficient to yield seismic energy for the production of a moderate earthquake. (Author).
