Promoting Cardiovascular Health in the Developing World by Institute of Medicine,Board on Global Health,Committee on Preventing the Global Epidemic of Cardiovascular Disease: Meeting the Challenges in Developing Countries Pdf

Cardiovascular disease (CVD), once thought to be confined primarily to industrialized nations, has emerged as a major health threat in developing countries. Cardiovascular disease now accounts for nearly 30 percent of deaths in low and middle income countries each year, and is accompanied by significant economic repercussions. Yet most governments, global health institutions, and development agencies have largely overlooked CVD as they have invested in health in developing countries. Recognizing the gap between the compelling evidence of the global CVD burden and the investment needed to prevent and control CVD, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) turned to the IOM for advice on how to catalyze change. In this report, the IOM recommends that the NHLBI, development agencies, nongovernmental organizations, and governments work toward two essential goals: creating environments that promote heart healthy lifestyle choices and help reduce the risk of chronic diseases, and building public health infrastructure and health systems with the capacity to implement programs that will effectively detect and reduce risk and manage CVD. To meet these goals, the IOM recommends several steps, including improving cooperation and collaboration; implementing effective and feasible strategies; and informing efforts through research and health surveillance. Without better efforts to promote cardiovascular health, global health as a whole will be undermined.

Disease Control Priorities, Third Edition (Volume 5) by Dorairaj Prabhakaran,Shuchi Anand,Thomas A. Gaziano,Jean-Claude Mbanya,Rachel Nugent Pdf

Cardiovascular, respiratory, and related conditions cause more than 40 percent of all deaths globally, and their substantial burden is rising, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Their burden extends well beyond health effects to include significant economic and societal consequences. Most of these conditions are related, share risk factors, and have common control measures at the clinical, population, and policy levels. Lives can be extended and improved when these diseases are prevented, detected, and managed. This volume summarizes current knowledge and presents evidence-based interventions that are effective, cost-effective, and scalable in LMICs.

A Nationwide Framework for Surveillance of Cardiovascular and Chronic Lung Diseases by Institute of Medicine,Board on Population Health and Public Health Practice,Committee on a National Surveillance System for Cardiovascular and Select Chronic Diseases Pdf

Chronic diseases are common and costly, yet they are also among the most preventable health problems. Comprehensive and accurate disease surveillance systems are needed to implement successful efforts which will reduce the burden of chronic diseases on the U.S. population. A number of sources of surveillance data--including population surveys, cohort studies, disease registries, administrative health data, and vital statistics--contribute critical information about chronic disease. But no central surveillance system provides the information needed to analyze how chronic disease impacts the U.S. population, to identify public health priorities, or to track the progress of preventive efforts. A Nationwide Framework for Surveillance of Cardiovascular and Chronic Lung Diseases outlines a conceptual framework for building a national chronic disease surveillance system focused primarily on cardiovascular and chronic lung diseases. This system should be capable of providing data on disparities in incidence and prevalence of the diseases by race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and geographic region, along with data on disease risk factors, clinical care delivery, and functional health outcomes. This coordinated surveillance system is needed to integrate and expand existing information across the multiple levels of decision making in order to generate actionable, timely knowledge for a range of stakeholders at the local, state or regional, and national levels. The recommendations presented in A Nationwide Framework for Surveillance of Cardiovascular and Chronic Lung Diseases focus on data collection, resource allocation, monitoring activities, and implementation. The report also recommends that systems evolve along with new knowledge about emerging risk factors, advancing technologies, and new understanding of the basis for disease. This report will inform decision-making among federal health agencies, especially the Department of Health and Human Services; public health and clinical practitioners; non-governmental organizations; and policy makers, among others.

Preventing Coronary Heart Disease by Michael Calnan Pdf

Coronary Heart Disease is the major cause of death in the UK, being responsible for thirty-one percent of male deaths and for twenty-four percent of female deaths in 1987 in England and Wales. Preventing Coronary Heart Disease examines these statistics and focuses specifically on policies for its prevention by the Government, general practitioners, and concerned groups. Michael Calnan looks at the feasibility and effectiveness of these health policies and the obstacles in the way of their adoption. Drawing mainly on the discipline of politics, sociology, and epidemiology the author begins by examining the epidemiological case for prevention, and then analyses what the UK Government is doing and can do. The Government's policy is based on the role of primary care in prevention and the author discusses how this can be taken on board by GPs, concerned groups and the general public. Coronary heart disease is of major concern to all those working in health and related industries, as well as to individuals. This book is the first study of the policies of prevention of the disease and will be invaluable reading for students of health studies, and social policy as well as professionals working in health care.

Preventive Cardiology by Jo Anne Micale Foody Pdf

Preventive cardiology is a fast moving field that places emphasis on the prevention and treatment of coronary disease. Preventive Cardiology: Insights Into the Prevention and Treatment of Cardiovascular Disease, Second Edition is intended for clinical cardio- gists, internists, primary care providers, and allied health care professionals who wish to extend their knowledge and expertise in the rapidly expanding field of preventive car- ology. It is the mission of this book to provide clinicians with the understanding and tools necessary to implement prevention in their daily practices. Recent changes in the delivery of health care in the United States and abroad, in conjunction with new scientific evidence supporting the role of preventive strategies in the maintenance of cardiovascular health, have focused new attention and efforts on the field of cardiovascular disease prevention. The field of cardiology is thus making a gradual transition from the technology-driven, intervention-oriented perspective of the last several decades to a new, preventive, molecular-based perspective. As fresh evidence amasses that preventive measures produce a considerable decrease in the incidence of both primary and secondary cardiac events and mortality, there is growing, widespread acknowledgment that health care providers from all arenas must initiate preventive str- egies in the management and care of their patients.

Hyperlipidemia in Primary Care by Matthew J. Sorrentino Pdf

Cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death for men and women in this country, surpassing deaths due to all cancers combined. Better awareness of heart disease risk factors and improved treatment modalities has produced great progress in reducing deaths due to myocardial infarction and stroke over the past few decades. Still, more progress is needed, as about half of all first coronary events occur in individuals who have no cardiac symptoms and no previously diagnosed heart disease. The primary care physician, therefore, has an important role in identifying at risk individuals and beginning preventive modalities. In Hyperlipidemia in Primary Care: A Practical Guide to Risk Reduction, a group of leading authorities in the field offers a comprehensive overview of the problem along with practical strategies for treating it. This unique title reviews methods for assessing risk in patients, including an important and thorough discussion of the Framingham algorithm and its limitations and advantages in assessing CVD risk. The book also reviews the evolving world of lipidology and how to apply many of the newer lipid tests to patients in daily practice, putting these tests into proper perspective and offering a rational approach to using them in practice. Finally, treatment issues are covered. As treatment has expanded to more risk groups, a number of different guidelines have been published with recommended lipid goals. This is an evolving area of research with rapidly changing guidelines that are expanding the pool of high risk patients. An invaluable reference that offers a reasonable approach to risk assessment and treatment of individuals at increased cardiovascular risk, Hyperlipidemia in Primary Care: A Practical Guide to Risk Reduction provides the background needed to make scientifically based decisions that can ultimately help greatly reduce the number of patients impacted by cardiovascular disease.
