Principles and Methods of Moral Training by J. Welton Pdf

Excerpt from Principles and Methods of Moral Training: With Special Reference to School Discipline This book is intended as a companion to the Principles and Methods of Teaching, and, like that work, is both theoretical and practical. In the suggestions as to practice, however, it is felt that there is no need, in this case, to limit the outlook to one type of school. Schools differ widely in their curricula and in the age at which their pupils leave, and consequently a book on teaching should confine itself to one type of school or it would become unwieldy and at the same time would lose in definiteness of application. But in a treatment of the disciplinary aspect of school life this is much less the case. It is true that differences in the age of the pupils and differences in the type of school lead to wide differences in disciplinary organization. But it is much easier to see the common principles which underlie such differences than it is to trace common principles in the methods of teaching very different subjects. Consequently we have applied our theory to schools of all types, and our work is intended to cover all institutions in which the young are trained. But such applications are intended only as illustrations of the theory. In discipline even more than in teaching "it is the spirit that quickeneth, the flesh profiteth nothing." Discipline is, therefore, treated primarily from the point of view of its effect on the child; secondarily, and by way of illustration, from the point of view of its exercise by the teacher. Moral Principles In Education by John Dewey Pdf

"Moral Principles in Education" is a book written by the influential American philosopher and educator John Dewey. The book was published in 1909 and is part of Dewey's broader body of work on education and philosophy. In "Moral Principles in Education," Dewey explores the relationship between education and the development of moral principles. He argues that moral education should be an integral part of the educational process and that moral principles should be taught in the context of real-life experiences and situations. Dewey emphasizes the importance of active learning, problem-solving, and democratic principles in moral education. Dewey's ideas on education and ethics have had a lasting impact on the field of education, and his writings continue to be influential in discussions about the role of education in shaping moral character and responsible citizenship. This book is an important work in Dewey's educational philosophy and his broader contributions to pragmatism and progressive education.

Moral Principles in Education by John Dewey Pdf

Two years ago Bernie Nolan was given the initial all-clear after a courageous battle with breast cancer. Over the moon, Bernie set about rebuilding her life and making plans for the future. Then in the summer of 2012, she was in her bedroom getting dressed when she found a lump just above her breast. Terrified, she immediately made a hospital appointment, where she was given the devastating news that the cancer had returned. It had spread to her brain, lungs, liver, and bones, and was incurable. Bernie's first thought was of her daughter. Erin had just turned thirteen and was approaching a time when young girls need their mums more than ever. In true Bernie spirit she vowed not to let the cancer stop her from being "Mum." Bernie always said that her family was her greatest achievement and she wanted to be the best wife and mother she could be in the time she had left. In this book Bernie shares her struggle to become a mother--the miscarriage she suffered and the heartbreaking stillbirth of her daughter Kate, and the joyous arrival of her beautiful daughter Erin. Bernie loved seeing this book published and was thrilled when it became a number 1 bestseller. It meant a great deal to her that so many people wanted to read her story. This is a memoir brimming with happy memories, and although Bernie tragically lost her battle on the 4th July 2013, she lives on in the hearts of the nation and in the pages of this book. Moving and wonderfully warm-hearted, this is a powerful story of a remarkable life and a mother's brave fight against a vicious disease.

Moral Principles in Education and My Pedagogic Creed by John Dewey by John Dewey Pdf

Contemporary political and socioeconomic conditions largely characterized by corruption and inequity have added new urgency to recurring calls for reorienting American public schools to their historic purpose: educating a citizenry both equipped and motivated to serve as the ultimate guardians of democracy. While the Founding Fathers, including Jefferson, as well as the founders of public schools, including Horace Mann, explicitly stated that rationale, perhaps no one has done more than John Dewey to detail the inextricable relationship between education and democratic society. In Moral Principles in Education and My Pedagogic Creed, Dewey reminds readers of public schools’ original purpose, identifying specific educational principles and practices that either promote or undermine their essential democratic goals. “There cannot be two sets of ethical principles,” he says, “one for life in the school, and the other for life outside of the school.” In these works and through such caveats, Dewey offers readers both the motivation to engage in the struggle for a new emphasis on educating for democratic citizenship and the guidance necessary to translate his theory into effective practice. Perfect for courses such as: Philosophy of Education, Teaching Methods, Principles of Teaching and Learning, Education Policy, Education Leadership, Education Foundations, Curriculum Theory and History, Curriculum Design, The Philosophy of John Dewey, and School Change/Reform.

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1917 edition. Excerpt: ... Part IV: The Home CHAPTER XIX MORAL EDUCATION IN THE HOME The Fundamental Aims and Methods of Moral Education the Same in the Home and the School --Since the moral spirit is one, and the child in the home is the same being that he is in the school, the fundamental aims and (in essence) methods of moral education will be identical, whoever conducts it and under whatever conditions it may be carried on. All that needs to be done in this chapter, therefore, is to point out the principles and make some suggestions with regard to their application by parents. The most fundamental principles of moral education, as I conceive them, are stated above in Chapters II, V, XI, XII, XIII and XVI. I shall not, of course, attempt to repeat, even in summary, the contents of these portions of the book. All I can do is to show what form they take when applied to the problems raised by the children in the home. The Value of General Principles as a Guide to Practise.--Aristotle defined virtue (or excellence, as we ought to translate the word he used) as a mean between two extremes. Bunyan put the same thing more picturesquely when he represented Christian's way toward the Heavenly City as a narrow path between a very deep ditch on the right hand and a very dangerous quag on the left. This picture enables us to represent quite accurately the relation of all principles, including educational principles, to life. They can tell us in what direction the Heavenly City lies. They can suggest reasons why, fleeing in all haste from the City of Destruction, we should repair thither, at whatever cost. But beyond this their field of usefulness is an extremely limited one. For the correct application of them to a concrete situation involves the ability to see a narrow...
