Proceedings at the Celebration of the One Hundred and Sixtieth Anniversary of the Falling Spring Presbyterian Church by Harris R. Schenck Pdf

Excerpt from Proceedings at the Celebration of the One Hundred and Sixtieth Anniversary of the Falling Spring Presbyterian Church: And the One Hundredth Anniversary of Its Existence as a Separate Charge, November 10th, 11th, 12th and 14th, 1894 As a true man loves his home, and a true patriot his country, so a true Christian loves his Church. Home and country and Church are the Christian's dearest earthly inheritances. Neither pride of ancestry, nor idolatry of stone and mortar, can be mistaken for genuine fruit-bearing love of Zion's "towers and bulwarks and palaces." (Ps. 48:12-13.) "A people who take no pride," says Macaulay, "in remembering and recording the deeds of their forefathers, will not be likely to do anything worth to be remembered or preserved by posterity." And a godly ancestry is more to be desired than a great or wealthy. Thomas Guthrie once wrote, "Through my ancestry, as far as I can trace them, I can claim to be the seed of the righteous, a higher honor than the blue blood of which some boast." And Wni. Cowper well sang: "My boast is not that I deduce my birth From loins enthroned, and rulers of the earth; But higher far my proud pretensions rise, The son of parents passed into the skies." The chief value of a study of the past is that we are thereby incited to the work of improving upon that past. The Patient Ferment of the Early Church by Alan Kreider Pdf

How and why did the early church grow in the first four hundred years despite disincentives, harassment, and occasional persecution? In this unique historical study, veteran scholar Alan Kreider delivers the fruit of a lifetime of study as he tells the amazing story of the spread of Christianity in the Roman Empire. Challenging traditional understandings, Kreider contends the church grew because the virtue of patience was of central importance in the life and witness of the early Christians. They wrote about patience, not evangelism, and reflected on prayer, catechesis, and worship, yet the church grew--not by specific strategies but by patient ferment.

Canada's Residential Schools by Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada,Commission de vérité et réconciliation du Canada Pdf

Between 1867 and 2000, the Canadian government sent over 150,000 Aboriginal children to residential schools across the country. Government officials and missionaries agreed that in order to “civilize and Christianize" Aboriginal children, it was necessary to separate them from their parents and their home communities. For children, life in these schools was lonely and alien. Discipline was harsh, and daily life was highly regimented. Aboriginal languages and cultures were denigrated and suppressed. Education and technical training too often gave way to the drudgery of doing the chores necessary to make the schools self-sustaining. Child neglect was institutionalized, and the lack of supervision created situations where students were prey to sexual and physical abusers. Legal action by the schools’ former students led to the creation of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada in 2008. The product of over six years of research, the Commission’s final report outlines the history and legacy of the schools, and charts a pathway towards reconciliation. Canada’s Residential Schools: Reconciliation documents the complexities, challenges, and possibilities of reconciliation by presenting the findings of public testimonies from residential school Survivors and others who participated in the TRC’s national events and community hearings. For many Aboriginal people, reconciliation is foremost about healing families and communities, and revitalizing Indigenous cultures, languages, spirituality, laws, and governance systems. For governments, building a respectful relationship involves dismantling a centuries-old political and bureaucratic culture in which, all too often, policies and programs are still based on failed notions of assimilation. For churches, demonstrating long-term commitment to reconciliation requires atoning for harmful actions in the residential schools, respecting Indigenous spirituality, and supporting Indigenous peoples’ struggles for justice and equity. Schools must teach Canadian history in ways that foster mutual respect, empathy, and engagement. All Canadian children and youth deserve to know what happened in the residential schools and to appreciate the rich history and collective knowledge of Indigenous peoples. This volume also emphasizes the important role of public memory in the reconciliation process, as well as the role of Canadian society, including the corporate and non-profit sectors, the media, and the sports community in reconciliation. The Commission urges Canada to adopt the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples as a framework for reconciliation. While Aboriginal peoples are victims of violence and discrimination, they are also holders of Treaty, Aboriginal, and human rights and have a critical role to play in reconciliation. All Canadians must understand how traditional First Nations, Inuit, and Métis approaches to resolving conflict, repairing harm, and restoring relationships can inform the reconciliation process. The TRC’s calls to action identify the concrete steps that must be taken to ensure that our children and grandchildren can live together in dignity, peace, and prosperity on these lands we now share.Between 1867 and 2000, the Canadian government sent over 150,000 Aboriginal children to residential schools across the country. Polar-Orbiting Operational Environmental Satellites by United States. Government Accountability Office Pdf

The National Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System (NPOESS) is a tri-agency acquisition--managed by the Departments of Commerce and Defense and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration--which experienced escalating costs, schedule delays, and technical difficulties. These factors led to a June 2006 decision to restructure the program thereby decreasing the program's complexity, increasing its estimated cost to $12.5 billion, and delaying the first two satellites by 3 to 5 years. GAO was asked to (1) assess progress in restructuring the acquisition, (2) evaluate progress in establishing an effective management structure, (3) assess the reliability of the cost ...
