Proceedings of the fourth International Conference on Popular Culture in the Middle East and North Africa : conference organized with Oxford University, 5 - 7 April 2006 by International Conference on Popular Culture in the Middle East and North Africa,Ǧamʿīyat al-Aẖawaīn,University of Oxford Pdf
"From April 5 to 7, 2006 Al Akhawayn University held the 4th International conference on popular culture in the Middle East and North Africa: public spaces, mass media, and mass consumption in conjunction with Oxford University. The conference brought together a wide range of academics and researchers from morocco, Algeria, Mauritania, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Iran, Israel, France, Austria, the United Kingdom, Canada, and the United States and covered topics as wide as rap music, popular religion, gender and language use, and Juha stories... The conference at Al Akhawayn University gave researchers from the fields of architecture, archeology, anthropology, linguistics, and literature a forum to not only present on their work, but to interact, question, and expand their interests and knowledge. Perhaps because of where the conference was held [Morocco] the majority of papers presented focused on North Africa and the largest number on topics related to popular religious practices... This volume of the conference proceedings includes only a small number of the papers presented during the conference. Some of the papers have been committed to publication elsewhere or final copies were not submitted by the authors." -- from Introduction (p. 9-10).
