Excerpt from Proceedings of the Liverpool Geological Society, Vol. 5: Session the Twenty-Sixth 1884-85; Part I I was, however, very much interested when I met with this calculation, for though it appears incorrect in most particulars, it is the first attempt I know of to measure the average waste of the drainage basin of a river. Previously Mr. A. Tyler had the credit of origi nating this mode of investigation (changes of the Sea Level, Phil. Mag., which was more fully worked out by Dr. Geikie (trans. Geo. Soc. Of Glasgow, and Dr. Croll (in Geo. Time Phil. Mag, If Phillips had been in the habit of making these calcula tions he would have seen at a glance that the result was wrong, and would have checked his figures. To preserve accuracy it is, however, essential to have all calculations checked by another individual, for as far as my experience goes, even mathematicians are no more exempt from errors of calculation than ordinary men. The worst circumstance connected with these errors is, that they get copied from one book to another without any attempt at verification. Of this I could give nume rous instances, but such a course would be invidious, and raise too great a storm about my ears. It would seem, however, as if the figures possessed little' meaning to most people, or the inaccuracies would be more quickly detected, at least by scientific men. For my own part, I can only say I shall feel indebted to any one who may find errors in my own calculations, if he will take the trouble to acquaint me with the fact. Proceedings of the Liverpool Geological Society, Vol. 3 by George H. Morton Pdf

Excerpt from Proceedings of the Liverpool Geological Society, Vol. 3: Session the Sixteenth to Nineteen, 1874-78 Glacial drift is the name given to most of those loose, incoherent materials which cover large areas in this and other countries. The Glacial Drifts are, (like the rock formations, ) found to represent several long successive intervals of time and conditions of climate during their deposition. Their faunes at one time indicate a severe arctic climate. That was followed by a temperate, if not a tropical climate; later still, the land was submerged beneath the sea; again it rose, under a mild climate, was clothed with vegetation, inhabited by animals, man probably being amongst the number. The mild climate was succeeded by another arctic climate, which, in its turn, gave place to the existing order of things. But I intend to deal moderately on this occasion with speculation, and present to you instead, as far as the very brief time at my disposal will permit, some of the evidence upon which the inferences I have just stated are founded.
