High Performance Computing and Network Program by United States. Congress. House. Committee on Science, Space, and Technology. Subcommittee on Science Pdf
The purpose of the hearing transcribed in this document was to obtain the views of representatives of network user and provider communities regarding the path the National Science Foundation (NSF) is taking for recompetition of the NSFNET computer network. In particular the committee was interested in the consistency of the evolution of NSFNET with the goals and characteristics of the National Research and Education Network specified in the High Performance Computing Act. Another purpose of the hearing was to explore possible legislation that would expand the program into additional applications for broad public benefit, including education, teacher training, manufacturing technologies, medical imaging, and the creation of standards for the storage of data in digital libraries. Persons who offered testimony and prepared statements were: (1) Robert C. Heterick, Jr., EDUCOM; (2) Thomas J. Tauke, NYNEX; (3) Kenneth J. Klingenstein, University of Colorado at Boulder and Federation of American Research Networks; (4) Mitchell Kapor, Electronic Frontier Foundation; (5) Kenneth R. Kay, Computer Systems Policy Project; (6) Michael McDonald, Communications and Computer Applications in Public Health; (7) Sara A. Parker, Pennsylvania State libraries and representing the American Library Association; and (8) Charlie Bender, Coalition of Academic Supercomputer Centers. (KRN)

Constructivist Instructional Design (C-ID) by Jerry W. Willis Pdf
This book is about emerging models of design that are just beginning to be used by ID types. They are based on constructivist and chaos (non-linear systems or "soft systems") theory. This book provides constructivist instructional design (C-ID) theorists with an opportunity to present an extended version of their design model. After an introductory chapter on the history of instructional design models, and a chapter on the guiding principles of C-ID, the creators of six different C-ID models introduce and explain their models. A final chapter compares the models, discusses the future of C-ID models, and discusses the ways constructivist designers and scholars can interact with, and work with, instructional technologists who use different paradigms.

Internet for the People by Ben Tarnoff Pdf
Why is the internet so broken, and what could ever possibly fix it? In Internet for the People, leading tech writer Ben Tarnoff offers an answer. The internet is broken, he argues, because it is owned by private firms and run for profit. Google annihilates your privacy and Facebook amplifies right-wing propaganda because it is profitable to do so. But the internet wasn't always like this—it had to be remade for the purposes of profit maximization, through a years-long process of privatization that turned a small research network into a powerhouse of global capitalism. Tarnoff tells the story of the privatization that made the modern internet, and which set in motion the crises that consume it today. The solution to those crises is straightforward: deprivatize the internet. Deprivatization aims at creating an internet where people, and not profit, rule. It calls for shrinking the space of the market and diminishing the power of the profit motive. It calls for abolishing the walled gardens of Google, Facebook, and the other giants that dominate our digital lives and developing publicly and cooperatively owned alternatives that encode real democratic control. To build a better internet, we need to change how it is owned and organized. Not with an eye towards making markets work better, but towards making them less dominant. Not in order to create a more competitive or more rule-bound version of privatization, but to overturn it. Otherwise, a small number of executives and investors will continue to make choices on everyone’s behalf, and these choices will remain tightly bound by the demands of the market. It's time to demand an internet by, and for, the people now.

Realizing the Information Future by National Research Council,Computer Science and Telecommunications Board,NRENAISSANCE Committee Pdf
The potential impact of the information superhighwayâ€"what it will mean to daily work, shopping, and entertainmentâ€"is of concern to nearly everyone. In the rush to put the world on-line, special issues have emerged for researchers, educators and students, and library specialists. At the same time, the research and education communities have a valuable head start when it comes to understanding computer communications networks, particularly Internet. With its roots in the research community, the Internet computer network now links tens of millions of people and extends well into the commercial world. Realizing the Information Future is written by key players in the development of Internet and other data networks. The volume highlights what we can learn from Internet and how the research, education, and library communities can take full advantage of the information highway's promised reach through time and space. This book presents a vision for the proposed national information infrastructure (NII): an open data network sending information services of all kinds, from suppliers of all kinds, to customers of all kinds, across network providers of all kinds. Realizing the Information Future examines deployment issues for the NII in light of the proposed system architecture, with specific discussion of the needs of the research and education communities. What is the role of the "institution" when everyone is online in their homes and offices? What are the consequences when citizens can easily access legal, medical, educational, and government services information from a single system? These and many other important questions are explored. The committee also looks at the development of principles to address the potential for abuse and misuse of the information highway, covering: Equitable and affordable access to the network. Reasonable approaches to controlling the rising tide of electronic information. Rights and responsibilities relating to freedom of expression, intellectual property, individual privacy, and data security. Realizing the Information Future includes a wide-ranging discussion of costs, pricing, and federal funding for network development and a discussion of the federal role in making the best technical choices to ensure that the expected social and economic benefits of the NII are realized. The time for the research and education communities to have their say about the information highway is before the ribbon is cut. Realizing the Information Future provides a timely, readable, and comprehensive exploration of key issuesâ€"important to computer scientists and engineers, researchers, librarians and their administrators, educators, and individuals interested in the shape of the information network that will soon link us all.
