Positive Prospects by Campaign for Social Science, Pdf

Almost four in ten graduates studied one of the social sciences. Where do they go to work? How do their employment and earnings compare to those who graduate from other areas? What makes a difference to their employment chances? Positive Prospects provides a brief description of employment after graduation for those who study a wide range of social science subjects, using up-to-date information. The report gathers evidence from many sources about longer-term prospects and the backgrounds of ‘world leaders’. It shows that there is variation between those graduating from different social science disciplines, as there is with so-called STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) graduates. Positive Prospects takes a look at the effect of graduating from different types of university, while observing that this reflects a great many factors such as students’ backgrounds and where they live and study. One clear theme is that having number and data skills – either from secondary school or as part of undergraduate study – is likely to give individuals of every discipline a wider range of choices about work, meaning they are likely to earn more. Needless to say number and data skills are not the only things that matter, nor do all social science students need the same skill level. But the Campaign for Social Science has long believed that we need more people with conceptual social science skills and knowledge combined with some number and data skills – Positive Prospects shows that this combination has clear benefits. The Campaign has also prepared summaries aimed specifically at undergraduates, schools, and school students.

Delinquency, Its Roots, Careers, and Prospects by Donald James West Pdf

Delinquency evaluates one of the largest longitudinal-observational studies of juvenile delinquents ever conducted. Utilizing a normal population sample and conducting individual interviews repeatedly over many years, the author and his colleagues followed the development of 400 British working-class boys from age eight to twenty-five, of whom one-third eventually had criminal records. Five factors were found to predict most delinquent behavior, the most powerful statistically being the presence of a criminal parent. By measuring the accumulated pressure of these factors, D. J. West demonstrates the extent to which delinquency can be predicted from classroom observations or social background at an early age. He outlines policy guidelines that would tailor intervention to a youth's age and circumstances, and he argues persuasively that positive change in the parents' situation usually produces good effects on the children.

Prospects for the National Health by Paul Atkinson,Robert Dingwall,Anne Murcott Pdf

The British National Health Service celebrated its thirtieth birthday in 1978. A Royal Commission was set up to consider the role of the National Health Service, and it is the debates that surrounded this Royal Commission that form the basis for the twelve topics covered by this book. The economic difficulties that the country was facing when this book was published in 1979 highlighted the widely publicised malaise in the health service, and exposed the limitation of a set of ideals developed by the NHS in the years after the Second World War. These limitations, reflected in the economic recession of all industrial countries, presented a challenge and thus an opportunity to re-examine the nature and purpose of our health service. Although this work offered no easy solutions, it did present significant implications for public debate and public appraisal of the prospects of the National Health Service, and greatly mirrors the debates that have been stirring in more recent years. This title will be of interest to students of sociology.

Work Your Career by Loleen Berdahl,Jonathan Malloy Pdf

"The supposed extinction of the Indigenous Beothuk people of Newfoundland in the early nineteenth century is a foundational moment in Canadian history. Increasingly under scrutiny, non-Indigenous perceptions of the Beothuk have had especially dire and far-reaching ramifications for contemporary Indigenous people in Newfoundland and Labrador. Tracing Ochre reassesses popular beliefs about the Beothuk. Placing the group in global context, Fiona Polack and a diverse collection of contributors juxtapose the history of the Beothuk with the experiences of other Indigenous peoples outside of Canada, including those living in former British colonies as diverse as Tasmania, South Africa, and the islands of the Caribbean. Featuring contributions of Indigenous and non-Indigenous thinkers from a wide range of scholarly and community backgrounds, Tracing Ochre aims to definitively shift established perceptions of a people who were among the first to confront European colonialism in North America."--
