Progress in Group Field Theory and Related Quantum Gravity Formalisms by Steffen Gielen,Sylvain Carrozza,Daniele Oriti Pdf

Following the fundamental insights from quantum mechanics and general relativity, geometry itself should have a quantum description; the search for a complete understanding of this description is what drives the field of quantum gravity. Group field theory is an ambitious framework in which theories of quantum geometry are formulated, incorporating successful ideas from the fields of matrix models, ten-sor models, spin foam models and loop quantum gravity, as well as from the broader areas of quantum field theory and mathematical physics. This special issue collects recent work in group field theory and these related approaches, as well as other neighbouring fields (e.g., cosmology, quantum information and quantum foundations, statistical physics) to the extent that these are directly relevant to quantum gravity research.

Current Topics in Quantum Field Theory Research by O. Kovras Pdf

Quantum field theory was invented to deal simultaneously with special relativity and quantum mechanics, the two greatest discoveries of early twentieth-century physics, but it has become increasingly important to many areas of physics including quantum hall physics, surface growth, string theory, D-branes and quantum gravity as well as condensed-matter and high-energy applications and particle-physics. This important book presents leading-edge research from throughout the world.

Relativistic Quantum Field Theory, Volume 2 by Michael Strickland Pdf

Volume 2 of this three-part series presents the quantization of classical field theory using the path integral formalism. For this volume the target audience is students who wish to learn about relativistic quantum field theory applied to particle physics, however, it is still very accessible and useful for students of condensed matter. This volume begins with the introduction of the path integral formalism for non-relativistic quantum mechanics and then, using this as a basis, extends the formalism to quantum fields with an infinite number of degrees of freedom. Dr. Strickland then discusses how to quantize gauge fields using the Fadeev-Popov method and fermionic fields using Grassman algebra. He then presents the path integral formulation of quantum chromodynamics and its renormalization. Finally, he discusses the role played by topological solutions in non-abelian gauge theories.

Covariant Operator Formalism Of Gauge Theories And Quantum Gravity by Nakanishi Noboru,Ojima Izumi Pdf

This book provides a thorough description of the manifestly covariant canonical formalism of the abelian and non-abelian gauge theories and quantum gravity. The emphasis is on its non-perturbative nature and the non-use of the path-integral approach. The formalism presented here is extremely beautiful and transparent.

Quantum Field Theory II by Edouard B. Manoukian Pdf

This book takes a pedagogical approach to explaining quantum gravity, supersymmetry and string theory in a coherent way. It is aimed at graduate students and researchers in quantum field theory and high-energy physics. The first part of the book introduces quantum gravity, without requiring previous knowledge of general relativity (GR). The necessary geometrical aspects are derived afresh leading to explicit general Lagrangians for gravity, including that of general relativity. The quantum aspect of gravitation, as described by the graviton, is introduced and perturbative quantum GR is discussed. The Schwinger-DeWitt formalism is developed to compute the one-loop contribution to the theory and renormalizability aspects of the perturbative theory are also discussed. This follows by introducing only the very basics of a non-perturbative, background-independent, formulation of quantum gravity, referred to as “loop quantum gravity”, which gives rise to a quantization of space. In the second part the author introduces supersymmetry and its consequences. The generation of superfields is represented in detail. Supersymmetric generalizations of Maxwell’s Theory as well as of Yang-Mills field theory, and of the standard model are worked out. Spontaneous symmetry breaking, improvement of the divergence problem in supersymmetric field theory, and its role in the hierarchy problem are covered. The unification of the fundamental constants in a supersymmetric version of the standard model are then studied. Geometrical aspects necessary to study supergravity are developed culminating in the derivation of its full action. The third part introduces string theory and the analysis of the spectra of the mass (squared) operator associated with the oscillating strings. The properties of the underlying fields, associated with massless particles, encountered in string theory are studied in some detail. Elements of compactification, duality and D-branes are given, as well of the generation of vertices and interactions of strings. In the final sections, the author shows how to recover GR and the Yang-Mills field Theory from string theory.

Loop Quantum Gravity: The First 30 Years by Abhay Ashtekar,Jorge Pullin Pdf

'Written by young theoretical physicists who are experts in the field, this volume is meant both to provide an introduction to the field and to offer a review of the latest developments, not discussed in many other existing books, for senior researchers. It will also appeal to scientists who do not work directly on LQG but are interested in issues at the interface of general relativity and quantum physics.'CERN CourierThis volume presents a snapshot of the state-of-the-art in loop quantum gravity from the perspective of younger leading researchers. It takes the reader from the basics to recent advances, thereby bridging an important gap.The aim is two-fold — to provide a contemporary introduction to the entire field for students and post-docs, and to present an overview of the current status for more senior researchers. The contributions include the latest developments that are not discussed in existing books, particularly recent advances in quantum dynamics both in the Hamiltonian and sum over histories approaches; and applications to cosmology of the early universe and to the quantum aspects of black holes.

Quantum Field Theory Conformal Group Theory Conformal Field Theory by R. Mirman Pdf

The conformal group is the invariance group of geometry (which is not understood), the largest one. Physical applications are implied, as discussed, including reasons for interactions. The group structure as well as those of related groups are analyzed. An inhomogeneous group is a subgroup of a homogeneous one because of nonlinearities of the realization. Conservation of baryons (protons can't decay) is explained and proven. Reasons for various realizations, so matrix elements, of the Lorentz group given. The clearly relevant mass level formula is compared with experimental values. Questions, implications and possibilities, including for differential equations, are raised.

Quantum Theory of the Third Kind by Stephen Blaha Pdf

This groundbreaking book develops a new form of quantum theory. First there was quantum mechanics. Then there was quantum field theory. Now we have quantum theory of the third kind: a new form of quantum field theory with quantum coordinates in the imaginary part of a complex space-time. This book is the second edition of ?A Finite Unified Quantum Field Theory of the Elementary Particle Standard Model and Quantum Gravity? with major additions on unitarity, relativistic invariance and the nature of space-time. Some major new results in this books are: A Unified Theory of QED, Weak Interactions, Strong Interactions and Quantum Gravity; A General Formulation of Divergence-free Quantum Field Theories (Detailed discussions of unitarity and special relativity showing these theories are physically acceptable.). A divergence-free quantum field theory for massive vector bosons: No need for the Higgs mechanism. The "Low Energy" Limit of elementary particle sector of unified theory approximates the Standard Model (& QED) to extreme accuracy. It suggests possible doubly charged dilepton, and other exotic, resonances. The "Large Distance", classical limit of Quantum Gravity sector is General Relativity. It suggests no ultra-light Black Holes exist. Gravity is repulsive (anti-gravity) at ultra-short distances. Two-tier gravity ?saves? the concept of a space-time point by evading Wigner?s classic argument against it. Based on experimental data a preferred local reference frame defined by Cosmic Background Radiation is shown to exist in each locale. (Preferred local inertial frames are used in two-tier quantum gravity whose dynamical equations are invariant under general relativistic transformations but whose ?ground state? breaks the invariance down to invariance under special relativity.) A New form of hidden dimensions is defined ? Quantum Dimensions ? dimensions implemented via a quantum gauge field. A New method in the Calculus of Variations ? composition of extrema ? is described.
