Light Years by Caroline Woodward Pdf

In 2007, Caroline Woodward was itching for a change. With an established career in book-selling and promotion, four books of her own and having raised a son with her husband, Jeff, she yearned for adventure and to re-ignite her passion for writing. Jeff was tired of piecing together low-paying part-time jobs and, with Caroline’s encouragement, applied for a position as a relief lightkeeper on a remote North Pacific island. They endured lonely months of living apart, but the way of life rejuvenated Jeff and inspired Caroline to contemplate serious shifts in order to accompany him. When a permanent position for a lighthouse keeper became available, Caroline quit her job and joined Jeff on the lights. Caroline soon learned that the lighthouse-keeping life does not consist of long, empty hours in which to write. The reality is hard physical labour, long stretches of isolation and the constant threat of de-staffing. Beginning with a 3:30 a.m. weather report, the days are filled with maintaining the light station buildings, sea sampling, radio communication, beach cleanup, wildlife encounters and everything in between. As for dangerous rescue missions or dramatic shipwrecks—that kind of excitement is rare. “So far the only life I know I’ve saved is my own,” she says, with her trademark dry wit. Yet Caroline is exhilarated by the scenic coastline with its drizzle and fog, seabirds and whales, and finds time to grow a garden and, as anticipated, write. Told with eloquent introspection and an eye for detail, Light Years is the personal account of a lighthouse keeper in twenty-first century British Columbia—an account that details Caroline’s endurance of extreme climatic, interpersonal and medical challenges, as well as the practical and psychological aspects of living a happy, healthy, useful and creative life in isolation.

Rethinking the End of the World by B. L. Cooper Pdf

Since the day Jesus ascended into heaven, the church has eagerly awaited his second coming. And during the intervening years too many Christians have focused their study of the Bible entirely on discovering the end-time signs of his coming. Does Jesus expect us to focus on dates and signs, or does he want us to instead develop a healthy and mature apocalyptic spirituality as we await his coming and the culmination of his plan of redemption and restoration? Many of today's Christians lack a basic understanding of apocalyptic spirituality or do not understand God's mission through the church. Consequently they fail to see and appropriate the rich truths that can be learned and applied to their lives today. Yes, Revelation is a book for today! This book begins by explaining how the historic misinterpretation of end-time Biblical literature has distracted Christians from their true spiritual development and mission. It then explains how developing a proper apocalyptic spirituality can lead believers to healthy applications of end-time teachings. Discover how apocalyptic Biblical literature can help you see the redemptive work that God has in store for us today while we await his imminent return.

A Mirror Image of The Universe by Samuel L. Chapman Pdf

The story begins when eternity gave birth to time. The night was far-flung and astronomically wonderful when these giant bodies that we call stars were born. The stars are in galaxies of 100 billion solar masses that make up the Milky Way, which is just one galaxy among many. Chapman asserts that the universe, in its entirety, is a single organism with a complex structure comprised of countless trillions of organisms of lesser size. By asking you to really think about all he presents within the book, Chapman appeals to your introspective side, and he shows you how to understand the intricate details in all the twists and turns of the truth, which is obscured in this vast universe. If you are ready to look at our universe in a new and innovative way, The Countless Trillions of Universes within Universes can show you how!

Light Years by Tom McDonough Pdf

In words worth a thousand pictures, Light Years makes a palpable reality of an elusive and vivid way of seeing the world - and of a way of life equally intense and unpredictable. Unlike any other writer on the craft of film, Tom McDonough illuminates not only the mysterious alchemy that transmutes light into feelings, but also the passions of the movie industry's dreamers and the deft, sometimes daft, technicians who make the dreams come true. \Uniquely expert as both a cameraman and a writer, McDonough tells us how the masters leave their indelible mark on movies - Gordon Willis on Woody Allen's, Allen Davideau on Spielberg's, Nestor Almendros on Sophie's Choice. More importantly, with his experience with the day-to-day complexities of a cinematographer's life - with its disruptive, exhilarating dislocations and brief but lifeboat-intense relationships - transforms Light Years into a very human and compelling portrait of the world of moviemaking. \Traditionally the silent man in a garrulous entertainment, the invisible vicar of a stunningly visual art, the cinematographer at last acquires in these pages an expressive voice and an unforgettable face. Written on the set and on the road, Light Years is in authentic inside look at a profession whose story hsa never been told with such eloquence or passion.

There Isn't Any Grass on This Side of the Fence by Roy D Perkins Pdf

The title, “There Isn't Any Grass On This Side Of The Fence” is really a metaphor of poverty stricken people who don't have a choice but to remain in their ill fated destitute state. These people, (as the subtitle indicates), have no money to even maintain a sufficient standard of living, They have no knowledge as to how to get themselves elevated up the financial hierarchy. Lastly, they don't have the time to ascertain their predicament and to move up the food chain. This is a story that begins in the 1960's and ends some decades later. Placidville is really a 1960's ghetto filled with poor and uneducated people. The project, as it's called, is a place of racial hatred, bigotry, and discrimination. Criminal activities are the order of the day. The theme of the project is to do on to others before they do on to you. The people are not just living; they are trying to survive. Little do they realize, once they move in, they will probably never be able to get out. Placidville is a spider's web for those without funds. It's an attraction that the “have nots” cannot resist. Once in the web, the people soon become aware that escape is beyond their grasp. The project changes most everyone for the worse. In Placidville, all families become dysfunctional and continually fight amongst themselves. The project makes neighbors say and do terrible things to each other in order to gain an edge over the other. As time goes on, the residents learn how to cheat, steal, and to take advantage of every good or bad opportunity that come their way. The Placidville Project is a disease and there is no cure. To make matters worse, corrupt town officials and the police want nothing to do with the project. It's a big headache that they wish would go away. However, this headache is not going away in the near future.

Verse and Poetics in George Herbert and John Donne by Dr Frances Cruickshank Pdf

Innovative and highly readable, this study traces George Herbert's and John Donne's development of a distinct poetics through close readings of their poems, references to their letters, sermons, and prose treatises, and to other contemporary poets and theorists. In demonstrating a relationship between poetics and religious consciousness in Donne's and Herbert's verse, Frances Cruickshank explores their attitudes to the cultural, theological, and aesthetic enterprise of writing and reading verse. Cruickshank shows that Donne and Herbert regarded poetry as a mode not determined by its social and political contexts, but as operating in and on them with its own distinct set of aesthetic and intellectual values, and that ultimately, verse mattered as a privileged mode of religious discourse. This book is an important contribution to the ongoing scholarly dialogue about the nature of literary and cultural study of early modern England, and about the relationship between the writer and the world. Cruickshank confirms Donne's reputation as a fascinating and brilliant poetic figure while simultaneously rousing interest in Herbert by noting his unique merging of rusticity and urbanity and tranquility and uncertainty, allowing the reader to enter into these poets' imaginative worlds and to understand the literary genre they embraced and then transformed.
