Proving Ground by Kathy Kleiman Pdf

As the Cold War began, America’s race for tech supremacy was taking off. Experts rushed to complete the top-secret computing research started during World War II, among them six gifted mathematicians: a patriotic Quaker, a Jewish bookworm, a Yugoslav genius, a native Gaelic speaker, a sophomore from the Bronx, and a farmer’s daughter from Missouri. Their mission? Programming the world’s first and only supercomputer—before any code or programming languages existed. These pioneers triumphed against sexist attitudes and huge technical challenges to invent computer programming, yet their monumental contribution has never been recognised—until now. Over a decade, Kathy Kleiman met with four of the original six ENIAC Programmers and recorded their stories. Here, with a light touch and a serious mind, she exposes the deliberate erasure of their achievements and restores the women to their rightful place as revolutionaries, bringing to life their camaraderie, their determination, and their rapidly changing world. As big tech struggles with gender inequality and momentum builds in restoring women to history, the time has come for this engrossing story to be uncovered and celebrated.

David Maisel: Proving Ground by Anonim Pdf

Aerial and on-site photographs made at a classified military site in the Great Salt Lake Desert by David Maisel, author of Black Maps David Maisel's (born 1961) Proving Ground comprises aerial and on-site photographs made at Dugway Proving Ground, a classified military site covering nearly 800,000 acres in Utah's Great Salt Lake Desert. A primary mission of Dugway is to develop, test and implement chemical and biological weaponry and defense programs. After more than a decade of inquiry, Maisel was granted access to this facility in order to photograph the terrain, the testing facilities and other aspects of the site. Maisel began by photographing at ground level, focusing on structures related to the testing of chemical warfare dispersal patterns. He then moved to an aerial perspective to create images that resemble large-scale minimalist drawings inscribed on the land. Maisel's work at Dugway also includes photographs of the newly minted WSLAT (Whole System Live Agent Test) facility, which is devoted to identification and neutralization of chemical and biological toxins that can be weaponized by terrorists or rogue nations.

Proving Ground by William David Tarver Pdf

What would cause a young African American engineer to walk away from a promising career at the world's foremost electronics research and development company to start a business, from scratch, in his basement? David Tarver not only did that, he convinced two African American colleagues to join him in the improbable venture. Twelve years later, he negotiated the sale of that venture, Telecom Analysis Systems Inc., for $30 million. Tarver's business success was accomplished without the help of angel investors, venture capital, government grants, or minority business development programs. Overcoming obstacles related to race, technology, and business, Tarver and his colleagues conceived, designed, engineered, and manufactured sophisticated telecommunications instruments and sold them in more than twenty countries. David Tarver felt he had something important to prove to himself, to his colleagues, and to society. That is why he was willing to risk everything on a roll of the entrepreneuri

Yuma Proving Ground by Lt. Col. Scott Laverty (Ret.) Pdf

The Yuma Proving Ground's early history began in 1849 with the establishment of Army outposts in the region. When the United States entered World War II in 1942, the Army established a large-scale training center that expanded from eastern California into western Arizona. Gen. George S. Patton Jr. was assigned to develop the Desert Training Center as a location to train personnel and test equipment in the harsh desert for the war effort. As part of the Desert Training Center, Camp Laguna and the Yuma Test Branch were founded to conduct specific training and testing in support of the war effort. In 1951, the Yuma Test Branch was renamed the Yuma Test Station, and by 1957, the Army began training personnel on military freefall. In 1963, the Army renamed the Yuma Test Station as the Yuma Proving Ground. Today, the Yuma Proving Ground stands near the original sites with the continued task of testing equipment and training personnel.

Proving Ground by Peter Blauner Pdf

"A must read. I couldn’t put the sucker down."—Stephen King Nathaniel Dresden never really got along with his father, an infamous civil rights lawyer who defended criminals and spearheaded protest movements. As an act of rebellion, Natty joined the U.S. Army and served in Iraq, coming back with a chest full of commendations and a head full of disturbing memories. But when his father is found murdered near the peaceful confines of Brooklyn’s Prospect Park, Natty is forced to deal with the troubled legacy of their unresolved relationship. He also has to fend off the growing suspicions of NYPD Detective Lourdes Robles, a brash Latina cop with something to prove, who thinks Natty might bear some responsibility for his father’s death. Though truth be told, the list of people—cops and criminals—who wanted David Dresden out of the way is long. The search for answers leads Natty and Lourdes into an urban labyrinth where they must confront each other—and the brutal truths that could destroy them both. Proving Ground, New York Times bestseller and Edgar Award winner Peter Blauner’s first novel in more than a decade, is a sweeping crime novel, an intricate story about the quest for redemption, and a vibrant portrait of contemporary New York City, all told in Blauner’s singular voice.

Survey of Relative Hardness of Selected Impact Areas, Yuma Proving Ground, Arizona by Adam A. Rula,Behzad Rohani Pdf

The Yuma Proving Ground was visited to conduct a survey of the relative hardness of selected impact areas to establish the most suitable sites for a survivability test as part of DT II testing of 155mm XM718/741 Remote Anti-Armor Mine System (RAAMS). Soil/terrain data were collected at Z, R, Cain, and Adam Fields located along the north side of Poleline Road. Z and R Fields were located on nearly level, moderately dissected gravelly piedmont which had recently been graded and compacted to achieve a high strength within the compacted layer. Cain Field is located on a wash. The area is undulating and bare. Adam Field is located on predominantly gravelly undissected piedmont with some wash areas. The area is undulating and the brush vegetation was removed. The surface materials at the four impact areas visited are predominantly coarse-grained soils with some areas having large amounts of gravel and caliche. The soil was slightly moist and firm when sampled. The cone index ranged from 300 to 500 in the 0- to 6-in. layer, and the dynamic cone penetrometer blows per foot for the surface 12 in. ranged from 17 to 34. A comparison of calculated peak rigid body deceleration-impact velocity relation for selected surface materials revealed that the magnitude of the rigid body g forces that the RAAM can experience upon impact with various earth materials varies considerably.
