Psychiatric symptoms are considered to be distributed along a continuum, from mental health to a diagnosable psychiatric disorder. In the case of psychosis, subclinical psychotic experiences (which can include odd behaviours, strange speech, unusual perceptual experiences and social anhedonia) are often referred to as schizotypy. Research examining schizotypal traits in non-clinical populations is rapidly expanding. The exploration of schizotypy may help elucidate factors related to the predisposition to psychiatric disorders (schizophrenia and related disorders). Schizotypy is also a valuable model for exploring cognition as performance is not confounded by issues often present in schizophrenia samples, such as long-term antipsychotic medication usage, social isolation, and recurrent hospitalizations (Jahshan and Sergi, 2007). This is particularly important as cognitive symptoms in schizophrenia are strongly related to quality of life and functional outcomes, yet generally respond poorly to current treatment options. In this Research Topic, we welcome contributions that examine the relationship between cognition and the schizophrenia spectrum. Contributions can be either reviews of recent, relevant literature or experimental studies exploring the contribution of environmental, genetic and other biological factors associated with cognition and schizotypy. While some people with high levels of schizotypy exhibit adaptive strengths (such as creativity) and high levels of subjective well being (Goulding, 2004); other people with high levels of schizotypy who also possess other aetiological risk factors are considered to be at high risk for developing schizophrenia. Further insights into underlying protective factors (such as genetic, epigenetic, environmental, or other personality factors) are also welcomed in this edition. It is particularly important to determine factors that may protect some people with high levels of schizotypy from developing a psychotic disorder.

Schizophrenia remains the most complex, puzzling, and because of its tendency towards chronicity, the most severe of the mental disorders. It is a very heterogeneous disorder characterized by extreme disruptions of thought, per ception, behavior, and emotion. About I % of the population worldwide will experience at least one schizophrenic episode. Most of the patients will have a number of exacerbations leading in about 30% of cases to a chronic residual state, due either to the illness itself or to psychosocial environmental factors, or-most likely-to the interaction of both. Given the enormous personal hardship for patients and their relatives as well as the staggering costs of the illness for our societies, research in schizo phrenia has become the number one priority in many countries, especially in the United States. However, research on the etiology of schizophrenia has failed to establish a single causal factor, and it is nowadays accepted to be multifactorial. A combjnation of biological predisposition and enviromnental circumstances is assumed to be necessary for the manifestation of the illness. This shift in orientation away from an either/or (biological or environmental, e.g., family interaction) point of view, as evident in the work of the 1950s and 1960s, was certainly desirable to encourage research.

This book addresses an apparent paradox in the psychology of thinking. On the one hand, human beings are a highly successful species. On the other, intelligent adults are known to exhibit numerous errors and biases in laboratory studies of reasoning and decision making. The authors argue that this debate is marked by a confusion between two distinct notions: (a) personal rationality (rationality1 Evans and Over argue that people have a high degree of rationality1 but only a limited capacity for rationality2. The book re-interprets the psychological literature on reasoning and decision making, showing that many normative errors, by abstract standards, reflect the operation of processes that would normally help to achieve ordinary goals. Topics discussed include relevance effects in reasoning and decision making, the influence of prior beliefs on thinking, and the argument that apparently non-logical reasoning can reflect efficient decision making. The authors also discuss the problem of deductive competence - whether people have it, and what mechanism can account for it. As the book progresses, increasing emphasis is given to the authors' dual process theory of thinking, in which a distinction between tacit and explicit cognitive systems is developed. It is argued that much of human capacity for rationality1 is invested in tacit cognitive processes, which reflect both innate mechanisms and biologically constrained learning. However, the authors go on to argue that human beings also possess an explicit thinking system, which underlies their unique - if limited - capacity to be rational.
