Public Libraries and Literary Culture in Ancient Rome (Classic Reprint) by Clarence Eugene Boyd Pdf

Excerpt from Public Libraries and Literary Culture in Ancient Rome As no treatise dealing with public libraries in antiquity has survived from ancient or mediaeval times, it is only by the study of miscellaneous data afforded by classical literature, inscriptions, and monuments that a conception of public libraries in ancient Rome may be obtained. Employing such sources of information, the present inquiry will concern itself with the history, equipment, contents, manage ment, object, and cultural significance of the Roman public library. Particular attention will be directed to libraries in Rome during the first one hundred and fifty years of the Empire. The first four centuries, however, form the total period under general consideration. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Public Libraries and Literary Culture in Ancient Rome by Clarence Eugene Boyd Pdf

Excerpt from Public Libraries and Literary Culture in Ancient Rome The idea of founding public libraries in the capital of the Roman Empire originated with Julius Caesar: the actual realization of this idea was effected by Augustus. In the era of peace, so auspiciously dawning but soon so ruthlessly disturbed, none of the dictator's plans for the development of Rome was more significant than that of instituting libraries for public patronage. Caesar had doubtless long since learned to appreciate the value of the public libraries already established in important literary centers in Asia Minor, Egypt, and Greece, and could therefore easily foresee the function they were destined to perform among the Romans themselves. A twofold motive on Caesar's part is set forth by Suetonius:' first, to reduce all existing codes of civil law to a more simplified form by extracting only the essential features and combining them in a select series of legal documents; and, secondly, to throw open to public use as many libraries' as possible, both Greek and Latin, the duty of organizing and managing them to devolve upon Marcus Terentius Yarro. Before so worthy an undertaking could be executed, however, political conditions suddenly changed. Caesar was assassinated, and Varro, likewise thwarted by his enemies, suffered at the hands of the proscriptionists - events which augured ill for the furtherance of literary interests at Rome. But, fortunately, the affairs of the new Empire were to be administered by a successor whose ambition lay in the direction of literary as well as political supremacy. The Common People of Ancient Rome, Studies of Roman Life and Literature (Classic Reprint) by Frank Frost Abbott Pdf

Excerpt from The Common People of Ancient Rome, Studies of Roman Life and Literature This book, like the volume on Society and Politics in Ancient Rome, deals with the life of the common people, with their language and literature, their occupations and amuse ments, and with their social, political, and eco nomic conditions. We are interested in the common people of Rome because they made the Roman Empire what it was. They car ried the Roman standards to the Euphrates and the Atlantic; they lived abroad as traders, farmers, and soldiers to hold and Romanize the provinces, or they stayed at home, work ing as carpenters, masons, or bakers, to supply the daily needs of the capital. NEW PRINT WITH PROFESSIONAL TYPE-SET IN CONTRAST TO SCANNED PRINTS OFFERED BY OTHERS The Common People Of Ancient Rome: Studies Of Roman Life And Literature This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

Authors and Their Public in Ancient Times by Geo Haven Putnam Pdf

Excerpt from Authors and Their Public in Ancient Times: A Sketch of Literary Conditions and of the Relations With the Public of Literary Producers, From the Earliest Times to the Fall of the Roman Empire In printing the second and third impressions of my essay, I have been able to take advantage of certain corrections and suggestions submitted by friendly critics, among whom I wish to make special acknowledgments to Mr. Charlton T. Lewis and to Mr. Otis S. Hill, whose aid in the verification of the quotations has been particularly valuable. I may mention that in the printing of the first edition, I had been obliged, in connection with the increasing limitations of my eyesight, to confide the verification and the proof-reading of the quotations to an assistant, whose services proved, unfortunately, incompetent and untrustworthy. As a result, a number of errors which had been repeated from the German editions, or which had crept into the work of the transcriber, of the typewriter, or of the compositor, found place with annoying persistency, in the volume as printed. A History of Roman Literature (Classic Reprint) by Harold N. Fowler Pdf

Excerpt from A History of Roman Literature The greater part of the book is naturally taken up with the extant literary works and their authors; but I have devoted some space to the lives and works of authors whose writings are lost. This I have done, not because I believe that the reader should burden his memory with useless details, but partly in order that this book may be of use as a book of reference, and partly because the men tion of some of the lost works and their authors may im press upon the reader the fact that something is known of many writers whose works have survived, if at all, only in detached fragments. Not a few of these writers were im portant in their day, and exercised no little influence upon the progress of literature. Of the whole mass of Roman literary production only a small part - though fortunately in great measure the best part - now exists, and it is only by remembering how much has been lost that the modern reader can appreciate the continuity of Roman literature. The literature of the third, fourth, and fifth centuries after Christ is treated less fully than that of the earlier times, but its importance to later European civilization has been so great that a summary treatment of it should be included even in a book of such limited scope as this. Ancient and Modern Rome (Classic Reprint) by Rodolfo Lanciani Pdf

Excerpt from Ancient and Modern Rome Such a conception has no foundation in truth. The institutions were indeed excellent, but the men were not different from us physically and morally, except perhaps as regards the athletic training of the body. As a matter of fact there was the same struggle for life, the same craving for amusements and the same politi cal unrest; the same habit of depending upon the Government for food and clothing; and, strange to say, the same percentage in the number of publicans as compared with the total population.
